Review of Harlequin Cafe

Harlequin Cafe
Cuisines: Cafe
Description: NEW TEAM FOR AUTUMN 2017: The quintessentially British Harlequin Cafe is the perfect spot for afternoon tea, or coffee and cake by the fire. The cafe has a relaxed and quirky feel, reminiscent of a vintage tearoom with its panelled walls and old film set tables. Keep cosy by the fire and enjoy a cup of tea or hot chocolate in one of Her Majesty's Coronation mugs. We also offer an extensive range of teas and herbal infusions, from specialist local companies, including Comins Tea and Tregothnan. Indulging? Opt for freshly brewed coffee and cake!

Came here for lunch today and was greeted by warm welcoming staff, we looked at the menu and struggled to choose as everything sounded so tempting! When the food came I was impressed by the amount of food for the price we paid and it was delicious, did not leave a thing!:) everything is better than expected and will definitely be recommending this cafe.

We enjoyed a really nice cup of coffee and and fabulously moist dairy and gluten free orange cake. There was a great selection of cakes for all tastes. Decor is lovely and the parlour area of the cafe does not feel at all cramped (as it can do in so many cafes) Would def recommend a trip here especially if all the shopping in the designer outlet has worn you out and you fancy a bit of old fashion luxury.

Stopped here for a snack en route. We found the staff rather off hand, so maybe different people were on duty when the previous reviewer visited. Ordered a pot of breakfast tea and one of Earl Grey, and two cakes. The pots of tea were not labelled and were put in front of the wrong people. As the usual aroma was not noticeable milk had been poured into the cup of Earl Grey before we realised ! This meant that the person who wanted it was left with the breakfast tea. No lemon was forthcoming as requested. We were tired after a long drive and could not face making a fuss about it! The portions of cake were a good size, although the cake was quite heavy. The food came in/on a random selection of non matching china in five different patterns, but maybe this is considered trendy? The tea pots needed a good clean inside!

This is undoubtedly a great cafe for some light bites and hot beverages. Located within the Kilver Court designer outlets shopping area and known to most for the Mulberry Factory Outlet in the adjoining building, this quintessentially British cafe provides a very homely service with a friendly smile.

The decor is quite rustic with tastefully panelled walls and farmhouse tables spread over the wooden floor. It is usually quite busy. But be assured that there will be a welcoming person to attend to you as quickly as they can. The drinks come in Her Majesty's Coronation mugs and everything served in the cafe is organic.

It is the home cooked food that really places the cafe in the elite league of one of the best British food money can buy in Shepton Mallet. The busy tables give you an indication of how popular the place is. The short menu is prepared with emphasis on seasonal produce and mostly sourced locally.

On a cold winter afternoon I had some pumpkin and shallot spelt risotto, which was one of the best I have ever had. My partner had some winter vegetables and hummus sandwich served with salad. She mentioned that it was one of the best cafe food she has had in a long time. The hot chocolates we asked for were also made from very good quality fairtrade cocoa although it was a bit too sweet for my taste.

Overall the service, ambience and quality of food is just what I would expect in a cafe and hence can't find faults with anything in this eatery. The price is reasonable too. I will definitely visit the cafe again when I am in the area and would love to try out one of the lovely home baked cakes on offer.
