We stayed at the Highwayman the night of my friends' wedding in Somerset. We arrived at midday having not realised check-in wasn't until 2pm and were greeted by a rude owner/manager. Instead of asking cleaning staff to do our room next, or swap us to a room that was ready, he took us into the un-cleaned room and said we would have to wait to have it cleaned. 45 minutes of waiting outside later (too gross to stay in the room, with dirty linen, etc), were told yet again by the female owner/manager that we should have arranged early check-in in advance. We ended up with 30 minutes to get ready to leave for the wedding.
Back at the hotel that night, we discovered flower baskets outside the window were on auto-water at about 1am and again at about 6am, the drips of which onto the window ledge sounded like someone throwing fruit at the window. Whilst checking what the noise was, we found bugs (optimistically they looked like woodlice...) crawling on the windowsill. I decided to sleep in the car.
Breakfast was politely served, but a pink sausage, half an un-cooked tomato and a hair on my toast were the icing on the cake. We not be returning. Total nightmare.More
