“A nice hostel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2014

I enjoyed my stay at the lodge, it was clean and well kept. The showers were excellent, there's an extensive kitchen and the owners were reasonably friendly. There is excellent walking trails over the railway bridge behind the hostel which I highly recommend.

A few slight things to consider are that check in is from 17.00, also the turn off into Slochd from the A9 is very sharp, with the sign for Slochd appearing quite suddenly before the junction off the road. If you're coming from the south, perhaps go to Carrbridge from the A9 and take the A938 which takes you straight to the hostel. Also the mainline service to Inverness runs right past the hostel which might bother the most delicate of sleepers (although I was fine).

Room Tip: The female dormitory is nearer the mainline at the back of the building, the male dormitory is at th...

It's hard to believe this place bills itself as a hostel. The rooms are bright, clean and cosy, and the shared living room particularly is way above what you'd expect from a hostel. There's free wifi, a good television set, lots of books on the shelves and the furniture is quite new, which along with the decor makes it feel much more like you're staying in a proper home.

Be aware that the gentleman receiving you is a bit of a character, quite curt in his pronouncements, and he will insist you put on one from their supply of indoor shoes, which isn't the nicest feeling if you're barefoot in your street shoes. So make sure you've got a pair of wollen socks or indoor slippers with you as you first enter the lodge and the rest of your stay should be great.

one of the best places I have stayed at. We stayed here while visiting Loch Garten to see the birds, and enjoying a steam train ride from Broomhill to Aviemore. The location was perfectly quiet and scenic but close to tourist attractions or even to Inverness.. Kitchen and lounge great, beds great (and no end so you can still fit in if tall). A washing machine and dryer as well as a drying room, and many little extras provided too like some share tea and coffee, tomato sauce... even some free range eggs were available when we stayed. Free Wifi too which worked fast in the lounge. Great chance to catch upon some sleep with a great night's rest and fresh air.

Room Tip: We had a room on the top floor which is probably quieter if many are staying(wooden floors), but whe...

Ian and Liz run a clean, friendly and well-equipped hostel where everyone you meet will have a tale to tell. Free WI-FI, woodburner, free range eggs from the hens, great wildlife in the grounds, suoer showers, lovely comfortable lounge and I totally and unreservedly recommend this to anyone who doesn't enjoy the soullessness of a Travelodge! This place has CHARACTER!!

Thank you so much to my hosts at Slochd for making me feel so welcome as I trudged into Carrbridge. I was soon warm and comfortable and enjoyed the hospitality on offer. Highly recommended and I hope to visit again. Best wishes Joe

Really Well set up, always cosy and warm when you get back from the slopes, drying room so everything is sorted for the next day. Ian is an absolute character, and their knowledge of the slopes and alpine treks is invaluable. Literally 10 mins from Aviemore in a stunning location, can't say enugh about the place

Stayed for two nights, the lodge is fantastic, spotless, well equipped, homely and very comfortable, a fantastic base for touring around the Black Isle, Aviemore, Moray, Boat of Garten, to be honest, had I not had appointments to come back for I would have stayed longer,
Ian and Liz are lovely and friendly, and the setting is fantastic, I will be going back again and again, it is a real gem,
