Sandy Beach is a beautiful expanse of sand on the outskirts of Vieux Fort. The beach is clean and has a few bars dotted amongst the trees. There is free parking for those in cars and a regular police presence for the reassurance of bathers.
Amongst a few of the locals (I was staying in the small village of Blanchard) the currents of Sandy Beach have a fearsome reputation. Some went as far as to say I was mad for swimming there. On a serious note, it is on the Atlantic side of the island so parents of younger swimmers and less able swimmers should take care.
