“The worst room that I have ever stayed in”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

We booked a room in this hotel over a recent holiday weekend. There were many events in Manizales and there were not many options. I do not like bashing hotels online but I need to be honest. This hotel has a few good things going for it. First of all, the service was great. There are many employees and the staff is used to handling lots of guests. Everyone who we dealt with at the hotel was great. Also, the included breakfast was huge and very tasty. My problem was the room. In my opinion the room was very depressing. The decoration was terrible. There must have been a recent renovation but they did not do a very good job. Our mattress was also very uncomfortable- it was probably 20 years old. The sheets were polyester. There was lots of street noise outside of room and the bathroom was dirty. We were a group of 8 and had three rooms. One of the rooms was infested with bugs when we returned from dinner. The next day we decided to check out and like I said the staff was great. They understood and did not charge us for the one room with the bug problem and did not hold us to the 2 nights that we committed to paying for on boooking.com.

We walked into this hotel, and after having viewed a couple of rooms we chose the smallest which was offered to us for COP120,000 a night, which is a very good price. When checking out, we were told the price was COP189,000 instead. I told them to check with their colleague and manager that indeed the price was wrong. They checked this, and even though they admitted they had offered COP120,000 initially, they said there was nothing they could do. We ended up getting a minute discount.

The same happened with an excursion to Nevado del Ruiz we booked for COP110,000 per person, to depart at 6:30 am the next day. At 6:40 they said the park was closed due to bad weather. Then they said we could go for 150,000, but only to the park entrance. After 2.5 hours of waiting and looking at other options suddenly a guide was available and the park had mysteriously opened. What happened? We were the only two enrolled in the trip, so it was suddenly too expensive for them... Fine, it happens, but why make up a lie and have us wait for 2.5 hours? We paid COP150,000 in the end and had a good time!

The quality of the room was good, but we left with an extremely bad feeling due to this unfair treatment.

Room Tip: Mmm, see above. Agree on a rate including the 16% tax and have it written down somewhere.

I've been to Manizales many times and there are many great options, but if you want to be near the malls and downtown, or simply if you're on a business trip, don't try any other. This is by far the best and most traditional option. The rooms were renovated a couple of years ago and having the airport pick up service, makes it the great choice if you're either on holidays or business. The room view is quite nice and you can easily see the snow peaks that are near the city.

I hadn't stayed there in many years and was surprised with the new rooms and nice breakfast and light dinner included in the fee. I got a good deal, but paying around 80-90 US dollars is not bad at all. I´m definetely going back if in town.

Now, if you want something a bit more relaxing and on the countryside, about 25 minutes from this small town, I'd try the TERMALES DEL OTOÑO spa hotel, which has the best setting of the region, along with a nice spa, pools (natural pools), and rooms. It's more exensive but worth visiting if you're looking for a relaxing weekend getaway.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the mountains

This was a great place at a reasonable price. There is a great view of the Nevados.
