If you are anywhere near Manizales, then you have to visit Hacienda Venecia. We had initially booked a night in the hostel, which is great. There's a pool just outside, with fantastic views out over the coffee plantation. Meals are included (eating at a communal table), so it's a good place to meet others. The main house is something else though! Quite pricey, but worth it for a night. It's a big old ranch house with a gorgeous veranda, with sunset views over the plantation and hummingbirds that fly right up. The coffee tour is interesting & worth doing, even though it's not included in the accommodation price. Overall, a great place to relax for a few days and enjoy the peace & scenery.

It's worth noting that if you're coming in to Manizales by bus from Medellin, let the driver know you're going to the Hacienda and he'll drop you at the bottom of the drive. Otherwise, you have to get a taxi back from the main bus station.

Room Tip: Rooms in the hostel have ensuite and are basic & clean. Rooms up at the house have no ensuite, b...

This hacienda is the home of a coffee plantation. The rooms are delightful, as are the birds that surround the home, with numerous hummingbirds being present, and peacocks walking the grounds. You receive a very simple lunch and dinner, which is more than adequate. The room had a simple large bed, and a connected bathroom. Since this is a working plantation, some people might be put off by the insects and other assorted living things that are present. The tour of the coffee plantation is worth the visit, and you do learn something about coffee, and what is and what is not correct. Also, there is a hostel for those traveling on a budget. The stay at the hacienda was approximately $500/night, including the tour, the food, and the lovely environs.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, stay in the main house. Furthermore, the cries of the peacocks will be enjoyed...

Me and my sister stayed for two nights in the hostel. The main house was too overpriced, taking into consideration the quality of rooms and the fact that most don't have a private bathroom.
The plantation itself is gorgeous, but the coffee tour is expensive for what you get, and there is not a special price for guests. About the tour, it was all in English, despite that some people in our group could only speak Spanish.
If you are a guest of the hostel, you cannot visit the main house, or eat there.
In the hostel food is very simple and sometimes not enough.
Despite of being in a coffee plantation, only espresso coffee is free, you have to pay even for a latte.
We also got to meet the owner of the plantation, who was not very kind.

My sister and I spent 2 nights at Hacienda Venecia, and we decided to book at the hostel instead of the main house as there were not en-suite bathroom rooms available. When we arrived to the hostel they gave us a room without bathroom and it tooked a while for them to understand that our reservation was for a private bathroom room, so finally they moved us. That night the dinner was really poor, only a bowl of rice with few portions of vegetables and meat. Next morning they only have eggs for breakfast, with no other option (I do not eat eggs), so I was hungry as there is nothing else to buy there. That morning, we took the coffee tour which was informative, but can be for sure improved. . The tour its quite disorganized, and due to most of the guest are English speaking people, the tour is in English. The guide did not bother to ask for Latin visitors if they like the tour in Spanish or if it is ok to continue in English. The hotel guests need to pay the tour as the other tourist that just came daily for the activity. At the end of the tour, it finished in the "main house" where we met one of the owners and complained with him about the food and ask him for the possibility to have lunch/dinner in the "main house", as the guests of the "main house" had told us the food there was delicious and vast. We offer him to pay additionally for this service, but he seems not interest at all to listen to our complains, neither to offer us any other solution. He mentioned he will go later to the hostel, but we never saw him again. Lunch was ok, it was ajiaco, but at night again all the hostel guests were hungry as there was a really small portion of meat with rice. You pay $12000 pesos per meal (except for breakfast which is included), but due to the bad ingredients and small portions the Price is too expensive in comparison with other places in Colombia. The ladies that cook are really friendly, but they just limited to say that they do not have more food and that they received orders from the management. Then, I can just say that for Hacienda Venecia the hostel guests seems not to be as valuable as the main house ones,.. sadly...

We picked this coffee farm based on the glowing reviews here, and we heartily agree. I don't have much to add to these reviews, but I will share some of our experience. There is more here than simply an excellent coffee-farm tour, so I suggest dedicating at least three days to your stay here.

We stayed for three nights and were never bored. The coffee tour is excellent. Our room was more than comfortable and the food was a highlight of the stay. Long walks along the country roads through the estate were stunningly scenic. There are trails up through the coffee trees to the tops of several local peaks.

We met several fellow travellers from a variety of countries and a range of ages. We had interesting conversations over dinner and drinks on various lounging areas on the veranda as we watched the birds and sunsets.

We will be coming back, and we are trying to plan a family trip organized. It would be great for families, with many things to do together and many ways to find quiet time alone.

Room Tip: Hostel looks very nice, and the more expensive Hacienda is more luxurious. Great food in both locati...

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the hostel in the grounds of Hacienda Venecia at the beginning of March 2014 and we LOVED it. The plantation itself is beautiful and the coffee tour was great - really informative and interesting. In terms of accomodation, the main house is of course stunning, but comes with a higher price tag than the hostel and, in comparison, we thought the hostel was excellent value for money. We were able to stay in the same grounds, in comfortable accomodation (which, as well as comfortable en-suite rooms has a lovely veranda with lots of hammocks for relaxing in as well as a lovely pool!), for less than half the price of the main house (and thats not even mentioning the unlimited free coffee!). And our stay at Hacienda Venecia was so incredibly relaxing. The grounds are beautiful and the owners are happy for you to wander around and explore the grounds to your hearts content. We cannot recommend this place enough.

Lovely heritage guesthouse on what is said to be Colombia`s only certified fair trade coffee plantation. Stayed in twin bed room. Shower, sink and toilet were not ensuite but rather adjacent. Not unsurprising in an old home and still convenient. Wrap around verandah offers views of coffee bush covered hills, forest and rivers. Peacocks wander the garden. Housekeeper and her assistant prepared fabulous Colombian fare with avocado, rice, meats and amazing criollo sauce. Three hour tour of the plantation provided plenty of insight into coffee growing and tasting. Cool nights but warm days enhanced by a large shallow pool. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ensuite bath in double bed room.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hacienda Venecia is a coffee farm with a century's worth of experience in the cultivation, production, roasting, marketing and exporting of Colombian coffee. Due to climate changes, we are also expanding into growing and cultivating cacao where historically it wasn't possible. Along with offering coffee and cacao tours, we offer three types of accommodation, Main House, Guest House and Hostel, all which include unlimited coffee throughout your stay! Main House: The oldest building on the farm, which shows a traditional Antioquian colonisation architectural style. Enjoy our beautiful gardens, private pool, terrace, and game room. Rooms with private and shared bathrooms are available. Guest House: Traditionally where guests of the hacienda would be received, including coffee buyers and roasters before it opened its doors to tourism. A terrace with hammocks overlooks the pool and gardens full of fruit trees. Hostel: Transformed from an old coffee pickers' lodging, our hostel is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and paths amongst the coffee groves. This pretty corner of the Hacienda has a garden with fruit trees, an open kitchen, mini-market, patio, game area and camping space. Each bed has a large locker, bedside shelf, and small locker with a plug socket inside. All accommodations include complimentary breakfast. Traditional Colombian lunches and dinners are available for purchase. For more information on how to get here, please see our website. ... more   less
