so much to see, so much to do, a must for your Coromandel visit. Hot springs, an abundance of delicious fresh seafood (or catch your own from a charter boat or off the beach), go horse trekking, visit historic sites, sample boutique beers and wines, hire a bike, take a ride in a glass bottom boat, take a dive course, relax in the sun, visit an adventure or animal park... the list goes on and on

“Best beach that nobody knows about”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2013

Mercury Bay has some deservedly world renown beaches such as Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove, but there's another stunning beach that not even many NZers know about. Head north from Whitianga about 20 mins, or east from Coromandel town about 30 mins and you'll get to the turn off to Matarangi - a holiday settlement spread along a sand spit between the Whangapoua Harbour and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. You have a harbour beach for swimming, fishing, jet skiing etc as well as 4km of wide, white sand beach which is also very safe for swimming but also good for surfing when conditions are right. This is a perfect family beach - plenty of room for beach games, a park with toilets and a playground for picnics - and it's usually VERY quiet, except for about 3 weeks after Xmas when the clever people in the know pour in for their holidays. Over this time there are beach events such as fishing competitions, sand castle building etc. All year round the cafe, general store and golf course are open - if you're into golf look up The Dunes, Matarangi - there's also a lovely restaurant there which is a great venue for weddings etc.

With 17 Stunning Beaches all within easy reach of Whitianga, this oceanfront town has the charm and warm welcome to make any visit a memorable one. There is a array of great Accommodations to enjoy a Romantic getaway for two at a Luxury Bed & Breakfast to spacious family accommodations to enjoy fun follies at the beach. Exciting Restaurants to temp every palate from fish & chips on the beach to world class cuisine now available. For shopping their is a wide variety of stores with warm welcome awaiting your visit. Many don't know that Whitianga was the place that Captain Cook first stepped foot onto New Zealand soil at Simpson's beach just north of the township. In 2019 it will be the 250th Anniversary and if anything to go by of the 200th Anniversary we could see the Royal Family return to mark this special event. Upcoming visits this September is the Scallop Festival on the weekend of 14 Sept 2013 to look forward to as will be a great summer ahead.

“Welcome to my back yard”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2013

Call me one eyed - okay its my home town - Whitianga pronounced (Fiti ung ah) and Mercury Bay is the area where my beach is. Fabulous safe beach, I walk here most days, winter and summer, it doesn't matter, the sun shines, the sand is clean, and you can find treasures (shells) that will remind you of the wonderful bay you have been to. People here are friendly and welcoming, the view out from the bay is stunning. In fact check out all the beaches around this coastal area, they are all breath-taking beautiful, great snorkelling, fantastic diving, kayaking, fishing - well I am going to run out of space - get off your butts and get out here - its worth it!

“Attraction worth visiting if you like wine!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2013

We visited in winter. The food is really good, limited choice tasting plates Italian Style! Also mussell chowder which was fabulous! The view is lovely and the wine from the vineyard was very good. A must try is the Pinot Gris. Parking is not the best, especially when raining and the service is OK - not great. Fabulous spot with a group as seating is good for larger numbers. WOrth a visit and only a short drive from Cooks Beach or Hot Water Beach.
