The Lion Den is a hidden treasure!
Every room has an (african) theme and paintings and interior according to it. The kitchen alone is worth staying there. Everything adds up to a cosy and warm atmosphere. This hostel is run by a couple who takes care of all you needs. They even leave personal notes to wish departing travelers a good day.
If you come to Coromandel, don't miss out on it!

I have just done a whistle stop tour around the Coromandel Peninsular and found this fabulous little retreat hidden away at the end of a quiet street in Coromandel town. THE BEST BACKPACKER HOSTEL for miles. For cat lovers there is the most beautiful resident ginger manx cat.

This place has got loads of character. The rooms aren’t the best feature, as they are very cheaply fitted out and not exactly secure. Never bothered us though and is more than made up for by the lovely garden, with BBQs and picnic tables, and friendly hosts. The shared facilities are excellent, with decent bathrooms and kitchen, and you can’t argue at the price! The location is great too, although its further than you think from the town centre – a good 15 minute walk.

We nearly ended up in the commercial hell of the local holiday park but then turned a random corner & were lucky enough to find this little home away from home.
Cute courtyard with fairly lights & a grapevine growing over it, resident cat & dog to pet, overflowing herb garden, lemon trees, free bbq's, big chunky wooden furniture, nice large shared living area, fireplace, funky african prints & african theme, a teepee to stay in, the showers are hot & have good pressure.
We stayed in a tent so can't comment on the rooms but it was nice that the proprietress offered us the free use of mattresses to sleep on in the tent & they were very comfortable.
This place is well set up. It is small & like a little hidden gem away from the main roads.
It is not pristine in it's cleanliness but for a few dust bunnies I would certainly not pass up the chance to stay here.

We stayed at Lion's Den and found the cleanliness lacking in areas - the cobwebs on the windows and above lights had not seen cleaned in a LONG time, although other parts were fine. Also, would NOT recommend for women on their own as not many locks on bedroom doors and owner, although very friendly, did not see any issue with this. In fact the door did not lock on the shower and a man walked in. The lock worked and the door shut fine, but the door could still be opened as issue with the grove in the door, and when pointed out the owner said you just had to put your hands on the inside of the door and push (that was the answer rather than a cheap bolt or a notice on the door)! Also showers and toilets were together so a number of people could not get to the toilet at rush times as the showers constantly used. In all my travelling I've never seen toilet and shower in same room in a busy backpackers. The owner was friendly and the place quite unusual, but needs thought on the basics - security and extra cleanliness.
