Whakatane, 'New Zealand's sunniest town'. Hmm...not when I stayed here, it rained for the two days I was here and the sun only came out as I left.
Like many travellers who don't fancy walking about in the rain, I'm going to spend more time at the hostel and hope it's a great place to wile away a few hours. No problems with The Windsor, which is clean, comfy, quiet, good value for money and has a great communal dining room/lounge which is conducive to making new friends.
Great pool table, great TV and some really comfy armchairs all make for a friendly setting and I was fortunate to share my 2 days here with some nice fellow travellers. Kitchen was a good size and clean. The 8-bed dorm was similarly clean and comfy with a nice big fan to keep things cool.
Only odd thing was the posted check-out times. 'Check-out of the room by 9.30am and out of the hostel by 10.30am'. Firstly, 9.30am is 30 minutes earlier than any other hostel I've stayed in in New Zealand (or Australia for that matter). Secondly, once you check out of your room, haven't you in effect 'checked out'?
The second posted time of 10.30am makes it sound as though they want you off the premises by that time (although it does say that if you have a late bus, you are welcome to keep your bags there until later). So I guess, you have to be off premises by 10.30 and return to collect your baggage later if you have a late bus? Doesn't seem in keeping with every other hostel in which I have stayed where you're free to use the facilities until the time of your transport. A couple of the people I met did say they felt 'rushed out'.
Anyway, that aside, it's a great place to stay.
