Agritiglio is a hidden gem, up in the mountains of Tuscany with amazing views. The apartments themselves are well kept, clean and have everything you could ever need on a self catering holiday. The owners, Simona and Paulo are exceptional hosts and will go above and beyond to make sure your stay is fabulous, nothing is too much for them. The gardens around the apartments are well kept and the pool is spotlessly clean.
Myself and a group of friends booked all three apartments and stayed here for two weeks, we had two young children with us and we all agree it is one of the best holidays we have ever had. We flew to pisa and picked up hire cars and followed the directions given by 'tuscan retreats'. The whole process was hassle free and we found the apartments easily, although driving up the tiny mountain roads takes a few days to get used to.
Agritiglio is a ten minute drive from the beautiful town of Barga with its tiny traditional Italian streets, amazing restaurants and bars, supermarket, tabacci, petrol garage, shops and market stalls. The food and wine in the restaurants was amazing and it would be hard to choose a favourite, but I would advice anyone to avoid the restaurant down the steps next to the viaduct. It looks pretty but it is the only place that we felt we were over charged and the owner was a bit of a grumpy old man. Definitely try Riccardo's and l'altana, during busy times it is wise to book a table though as they are popular. The Alpino bar restaurant was also a regular visiting place for us, you can sit outside and watch the gentle hustle and bustle of Barga life.
The beautiful city of Lucca is only a 45 minute drive away and is a must to visit. Just outside the walled city there is also a train station with plenty of parking spaces near by. This is handy if you want to explore further but don't want to drive too much, Pisa and Florence are a short and reasonably priced journey away. You can also get trains to Venice, Verona etc if you want to travel a bit further.
This holiday all in all was one of the best experiences in our lives and we will definitely be returning in the future, if only to see our new Italian friends Simona, Paulo, Michael, Deborah, Lorenzo, Nicole and Daniel, they all made our holiday extra special and made us feel part of their lovely Italian family. Simona also is an amazing cook and makes the best pizzas I have ever tasted.
We have just returned from a week at Agritiglio, staying in the 'Nicole' apartment.
The location was great for us, close enough to Barga to visit shops and restaurants (10 mins drive or about an hour walk), but rural and peaceful. There are walking trails which pass by the farm, and some more starting from Tiglio, which were well marked and mostly well kept, many are shaded and cool. We just had one battle with undergrowth on the path from Tiglio to Coreglia. The views from the terrace were spectacular.
The apartments are very well kept, and very well equipped, we had everything we needed.
Simona is a very good host, and we enjoyed her home baked treats, particularly pizza night where the whole family got involved.
Booking through Tuscan Retreats was swift and painless.
We rarely return to the same place twice, as we really enjoy exploring new places, but we could easily return ( and I hope that we will) and find plenty more places to explore.
