Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

We stayed here first week of July as a couple. I had read lots of previous reviews and was a little apprehensive as some said it was a lot older crowd etc. Me and my boyfriend are mid 20s and we never felt too young.. There was a nice mix of all ages and nationalitys. We stayed in 202 right above reception and our sea view was amazing... nicest view ever..!! The wifi signal was always very good for us too. The room was immaculate and fresh towels and a bottle of water were provided daily. The breakfast was very good but dinner we didn't enjoy as much as we don't tend to enjoy buffet style..but that's just a personal preference. Everything was at a high standard. We ate at the pool bar at lunch and the portions were huge so well worth the money! The staff were all very friendly, and always happy to help.

We rented quad bikes out for a day which was a fun way to explore if you want a day away. There isn't much to do apart from relax.. and that was exactly what I needed!
Don't have doubts about booking if you want just an escape away from the hustle and bustle and to enjoy some greek sunshine!

A beautifully well-kept hotel, good if you're looking for some R&R and don't plan on exploring the island. It has the potential to be excellent, but a few areas let it down. The grounds have a five-star feel but overcrowding at the restaurant (often a 6-7 person long queue for fresh orange juice in the morning) and poor quality food makes you feel like you're at a cheaper resort. The (public) beach opposite needs cleaning up - it doesn't belong to the hotel but they promote it in their promotional materials and is one of the reasons we booked as an alternative to lying by the pool.

We booked the hotel through Thomson, and like other reviewers here, were disappointed. Flight delays at every turn (which resulted in us missing our connection on the way back) and reps that were all smiles at the induction but utterly disinterested when we had a complaint. If returning, we'd book directly with the hotel and opt for room-only and eat at one of the tavernas nearby. George's opposite is very good value - simple food but well done. Also, there are other cafes along the seafront and Gouves centre is a 20-25 min walk.

Strengths:
- Stylish and contemporary grounds, also very green and lush
- Good-sized rooms with modern fittings
- Friendly and helpful waiting staff
- Breakfast; good selection if a bit same-y
- Good (yet small) spa

Weaknesses:
- The (public) beach opposite is dirty and oily
- The location is uninspiring; you rely on bus / taxi to explore more interesting areas of the island
- Dinner; the food doesn't match the quality of the hotel and is quite old-fashioned, same with the drinks list

Day trips: If you book through Thomson, the 4x4 trip is great. A highlight of the trip - gives you a real insight into Cretan culture and the opportunity to explore the countryside if you're not interested in hiring a car. We weren't impressed by Ag Nik - it took over an hour to get there and we didn't think it was anything special. As it's described as fishing town we were hoping for some fresh fish or seafood but it's mainly very tourist-y restaurants. Heraklion is worth a visit but you don't need long there, maybe 2-3 hours. The archaelogical museum is great and Palace of Knossos also very interesting (combined ticket for both is 10 euro).

Room Tip: We had a garden-view room and it was lovely.

Just returned from a weeks stay at The Island with my boyfriend and overall we had a lovely stay. We are in our 20's but there were couples of all ages at the hotel.
The hotel grounds are well kept and very clean. There are some lovely hammocks around the hotel which are great for chilling, there is also a tennis court and table tennis. The hotel over looks the beach and in the evenings you get a lovely sunset view.
The staff were amazing, friendly and professional, always keen to make sure you have a wonderful holiday.
Beach opposite the hotel was quite average but handy as just over the road, but don't think this was one of the best beaches around.
Good size restaurant and different seating option depending if you want to be fully outside or under cover. There was a decent choice of food at breakfast and dinner, food wasn't over hot but never too much of an issue. We liked that you get a pot of coffee for your table at breakfast, so you don't keep having to get up to re-fill your cup. You do have to buy drinks with your evening meal but we found drinks prices quite reasonable compared to other hotels.
We stayed in room 401, I was a little disappointed on entering the room it lacked that wow factor - however did still have a modern feel to it. There isn't a separate bathroom its all open plan. The area with the sink, toilet and shower was small and a bit crowded.
The air con in the room wasn't over efficient you could only feel the cold air if you stood directly under it. There was enough wardrobe and shelf space in the room. There was a mini fridge useful for keeping water cool but our fridge didn't seem too efficient and there was water in the bottom -so unsure if this had been cleaned in a while.
Our balcony view was of some plants and the backs of other buildings outside the hotel. This I didn't mind too much as we hadn't paid the extra for a view and we did get privacy. However on the floor below it seemed to be a dumping ground for old items and cleaning things which was a shame as the rest of the hotel grounds were spotless.
Room was cleaned daily and you get a bottle of water each day. Some days the room had been cleaned better than others. We often found long black hairs and floor felt a bit grubby. I did also find a bug in the bedding one day.
The area of Gouves outside of the hotel was quite run down and not much to see. There were not many places within walking distance all required a taxi or bus.
We did make a couple of trips out to Spinalonga and Ag. Nik on the buses. Thompson reps warned buses may not be good but overall we found them to fine.
We only used the main pool and there was always room to swim. The sun loungers were quite close together so you sometimes felt a bit on top of other couples and made it a bit difficult to relax. There were some beds but these seemed to be taken very early each day and by the same people!!
Our favourite part of the holiday was sitting outside in the evening with a drink listening to the entertainment duo Big City Swell. It was a lovely setting by the pool, candles are on each table and some around the pool.
Hotel is on the flight path but we didn't find this an issue, if any thing my boyfriend loved seeing the planes go over!!
Overall a really good relaxing stay and a wonderful hotel. Would recommend if you want a place to relax in a couples environment. Possibly missing a few final touches in our room but on the whole would recommend The Island and all its staff.

Wonderful two weeks at The Island and did not want to leave. The staff are so friendly and the location is perfect. The duo entertainment Hannah and Alex (Big City Swell) are very talented and also Adam for a good variety of activities - The 'A' Team.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Island at the end of June, we were a bit apprehensive at first because the pictures looked so amazing and we didn't want to be let down when we arrived, but oh my god. This hotel was absolutely outstanding from start to finish. I cannot praise it enough.

The Staff were just wonderful, nothing is too much trouble no matter what time of the day it is - most of them, we noticed, work day and night all week with next to no break. I don't know how they do it in the scorching heat but whatever the condition they are happy to help, which made our stay much better! I hope they get massive bonuses!!!!!

The cleanliness of this hotel was one of the best I have ever stayed in, I cannot fault it at all. The pool was cleaned every night and didn't leave you with the disgusting chlorine smell all day. Also, our room was cleaned every day and the maids even folded up my boyfriends clothes, embarrassing for me but absolutely amazing service!

Everything about this hotel was amazing from start to finish, the only tiny thing for us that I could criticise was the food (even though I am being very picky here!). My boyfriend is a chef so I may be biased, but it was quite often tepid. I know its hard to keep buffet style food hot, but every night was a cold meal. Although there was a massive selection and a different theme every night so it would be hard for you to find something that you don't like! They put in every efforts which I did appreciate. The breakfast was amazing, my favourite meal of the day. Also, we liked the touch of having one meal where you are waited upon.

If you are umming and areing whether or not to stay in this hotel - DO IT!!!!!!! You will not be disappointed. I would go back in a heartbeat and did not want to come home!

THANK YOU AGAIN TO ALL THE STAFF!!!!! Enjoy your holidays here, I hope this helps you!

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and have a sea-view room, its absolutely stunning to wake up to every morning! En...

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks here. The running of the hotel, all the staff were delightful and fun, and the service was impeccable. The choice of food in the restaurant was brilliant and especially so as we needed a gluten free diet which was no problem. We loved the light airy room and modern décor. The beds are a dream.

Room Tip: We chose a sea view with balcony and were so pleased as it was delightful.
