We just came back from a wonderful 18 days holiday at the residence Zanzibar. This beautiful hotel met all our expectations. It was exactly as described by friends of ours who highly recommended it. Our break was simply perfect in every way: Beautifully decorated villa with private pool, great food, exccellent service, a very warm and friendly staff and atmosphere, perfect privacy, splendid beach that offers amazing and different sceneries with each low/high tide, great animation, immaculate gardens with lush vegetation, a fun kids club that our 11 years old boy and 5 years old totally enjoyed everyday. The whole experience was absolutely flawless to the point that we extended our stay while there. Thank you to the entire team of the residence for our lovely break.
Having traveled to many locations and islands in the Indian Ocean, and being demanding about hotel service and quality, I really recommend to anybody wishing to visit Zanzibar and looking for luxury, elegance and privacy to stay at the Residence hotel. We will be back!

Thanks once again to Trip Advisor...we have chosen to stay with our 2 girls (12&13) in The Residence hotel after seeing the great reviews on this site and after staying there we can say that it is even much better than #1.
We have stayed 5 nights and enjoyed every minute. The villa/room was excellent with super super super top service from the staff. The beach is paradise and the food was very tasty with many choices and always perfect. We used all type of service from the hotel and all were just Top of the Class. We took through the hotel a day trip to Stone Town and this was also organize in super high level, snorkeling at the hotel resort, tennis at the hotel resort and the hotel spa with massage treatment were all super super top quality service around them. We learned that the hotel is only around 3 years open and you can see that they thought about everything before to open it, in addition all the staff is Great and do the best they can to keep this hotel in its super high level. This is THE PLACE to stay and we thanks again to Trip Adivsor and to the people with the previous reviews...

Room Tip: Try and book the sea view rooms/villa

What a wonderful hotel to spend our last 4 nights in Tanzania. We had an sea villa, which we truly loved with our own dipping pool. I would very much like to give this place an excellent rating, but there were just a few things that stopped it from being given this rating.

The villa was fantastic, tastefully furnished with excellent beds and linens. The dipping pool was nice and refreshing, though the ladder was a bit loose. The outdoor cushions are useless, as when it rains they get soaking wet and do not have the time to dry, so we did not sit outside much. We ended up bringing in the cushions into the villa so as to use them the next day (unfortunately it poored cats and dogs, but at least the cushions were dry). There should be some type of system to make sure they can stay dry during the rainy season, should they need to be used.

We had a butler, but were not offered to have our luggage unpacked, and we ended up having to figure out the lighting system ourselves (just a bit confusing). The shower was luxious and generous and we loved the products.

The swimming pool is lovely and having the glass end is such a treat. It allows for some inside/outside interest. The lunch we had there was excellent.

The food in general was well prepared and well presented. We did have fish one evening that was over cooked, but in general all was excellent. The passion fruit jam in the morning was excellent, and they even offered us some to take home. The breakfast buffet is large and generous. I ordered the porridges every morning, which were also excellent.

I would also 100% recommend the spa and the various treatments, excellent and a wonderful staff.

So why not excellent, there seems to be some uneveness in the service, sometimes very helpful and kind, and others standoffish and distant. The beach itself is lovely with great sand, but the water itself, no thank you. There were large worms which looked like snakes, and I am sorry I just could not bring myself to go into the water itself. We missed the snorkeling due to the rain, but took out a peddle boat out, was nice, but again just could not bring ourselves to go into the water. The overall atmosphere needs to be just a bit more polished with more assistance at the pool and better bikes (I love the idea, but the bikes should just be in better condiion - some where and my two were not, sorry).

If you are looking for a splendid hotel with great food, comfortable villa-rooms, incredible sights, friendly service and sometimes the "i am all alone on this magnificent place of the world!!" feeling(although a full occupation) then book a front-ocean villa here!
One minus, somebody here loved my favorite shirt as well as i did...

Room Tip: Rooms100-103 should be my favorites.

Leaving in Dar es Salaam and regularly visiting The residence to get away from the fuzz; we, once again had a fantastic stay. From the ever so helpful staff to the quality of the accommodation and the amazing standard of the food for Tanzania. New thing, we were testing for the first time the place with our newly 'acquired' baby and everything possible has been made to help us. Again many thanks! Jef.

Room Tip: Try to get the sea view but booking well in advance is required, too much demand...
