My wife and I stayed at Unguja Lodge for three nights at the beginning of October and had a great time! By looking at the website it’s difficult to get a feel for and appreciate what it’s really like.
The rooms, as one previous reviewer stated, are very big. It gives you the feeling of opulence. Given that it was a once in a lifetime holiday we were OK with that! The furnishings are simple yet very stylish. Everything you need is in the rooms except there are no TVs. For me this was difficult. If I came again I'd like to go with friends so that there was an additional social component.
The pool area is fantastic. The wait staff will bring you cocktails and drinks etc. Mind you the cocktails aren't made as well as we had been accustomed to. E.g. the classics like Pina Colada weren't that great however the beer was!
The restaurant is very good. Each day they bring in fresh seafood which you can choose from on the menu (at dinner and lunch). Breakfast and dinner came with our package. We found the servings to be very generous in size and the quality of the food was sensational- except the coffee (pretty basic stuff if you're into coffee).
The owners are great people. Always happy to chat and help you with questions/concerns. You can get Wi-Fi but it’s only available near the pool.
It’s important to note that the lodge is sort of secluded. In that part off the island there isn't’ much else going on so bring a book, some movies to watch or book something to do each day through the dive centre (part of the lodge). I was there for three days and got a bit bored at the end. Not that the accommodation was lacking, some people really like this about it, I was just a bit unprepared and am also a bit impatient.
Anyway, I highly recommend this accommodation. I would definitely go back! The pros definitely outweigh the minor cons mentioned..Hope you have a great time there and look forward to reading other's reviews!
