“Fantastic resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2013

My wife and I stayed at Unguja Lodge for three nights at the beginning of October and had a great time! By looking at the website it’s difficult to get a feel for and appreciate what it’s really like.

The rooms, as one previous reviewer stated, are very big. It gives you the feeling of opulence. Given that it was a once in a lifetime holiday we were OK with that! The furnishings are simple yet very stylish. Everything you need is in the rooms except there are no TVs. For me this was difficult. If I came again I'd like to go with friends so that there was an additional social component.

The pool area is fantastic. The wait staff will bring you cocktails and drinks etc. Mind you the cocktails aren't made as well as we had been accustomed to. E.g. the classics like Pina Colada weren't that great however the beer was!

The restaurant is very good. Each day they bring in fresh seafood which you can choose from on the menu (at dinner and lunch). Breakfast and dinner came with our package. We found the servings to be very generous in size and the quality of the food was sensational- except the coffee (pretty basic stuff if you're into coffee).

The owners are great people. Always happy to chat and help you with questions/concerns. You can get Wi-Fi but it’s only available near the pool.

It’s important to note that the lodge is sort of secluded. In that part off the island there isn't’ much else going on so bring a book, some movies to watch or book something to do each day through the dive centre (part of the lodge). I was there for three days and got a bit bored at the end. Not that the accommodation was lacking, some people really like this about it, I was just a bit unprepared and am also a bit impatient.

Anyway, I highly recommend this accommodation. I would definitely go back! The pros definitely outweigh the minor cons mentioned..Hope you have a great time there and look forward to reading other's reviews!

Imagine Africa recommended Unguja Lodge for its diving centre, as well as its great rooms and service. Zanzibar is a fantastic place for reef-diving and the diving starts directly from the Lodge. Dolphin-watching and snorkelling are also available and for those less active, the swimming pool beckons! The rooms in the lodge have a unique design, melding traditional Zanzibar materials and concepts with all modern comforts. The resident monkeys add to the experience, the food is great and staff very friendly and helpful.

Thank you very much for staying with us lately and for writing this very nice review. We are glad you enjoyed the diving, the food and the villas. Two weeks ago the team of Unguja Divers discovered another new beautiful dive site and called it 'Mwamba Juu'. It's the Kiswahili name for 'The reef up there'. They saw huge and different kind of rays, large murray eals, octopus etc.

Unguja lodge offers wonderful accommodation in large Zanzibar style bungalows, delicious food and many small personal touches that make it quite unique.
All the staff could not have been more helpful and Ralph and Elies are caring hosts, the black tailed monkeys added to our enjoyment.
With so many mediocre hotels on Zanzibar this is a gem.

Room Tip: Rooms 2 and 4 are the closest to the main building which suited us as my husband had a sore ankle

We were fortunate to stay here for 3 nights following a whirlwind 2-week trip in Eastern Africa. We were looking for a place to relax and unwind before making the trip back to the US. Unguja was perfect! There was absolutely nothing that we wanted or needed during our visit. Food was excellent, staff are incredibly attentive, and the layout of the lodge and rooms is perfect. We took advantage of a snorkeling trip as well as an evening dhow cruise--don't miss this chance if you visit! Highly recommend, and definitely are making plans to return again in the future. Thank you, Nick and Mwona!!

We spent 5 nights here after a wonderful safari. We were ready for sleep, peace, quiet and isolation. This places delivers on all fronts! It is stunningly beautiful and the service is outstanding. Ralph and Elias are great hosts and you feel as if you are at someone's house. The villas are beautiful and we spent many hours in our sea view one, out on our terrace gazing out to sea. The open air shower is lovely, soaps are fantastic and the beds really comfy. Come here to abandon your TV, your iPhone and your hair dryer, to leave behind noise, hustle, bustle and busyness. Pack only your bikini, shorts and flip flops, you will soon be wearing the local Kikoy anyway! Come here to relax by the pool, walk along the beach (at low tide) swim in clear blue sea, Snorkel amongst untouched reefs and sail on the traditional wooden dhow! Enjoy watching the monkeys, lizards and butterflies around the lodges and restaurants. If you want polish and glitzy glamour this is not for you. The magic of it is preserved by the informal, rustic beauty. This place is truly good for the soul and will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed. We hope to go back sometime soon.

My husband and I have just returned from 6 days r & r following 6 days wonderful safari in the Selouse and Ruaha game reserves.
Elise and Ralph welcomed us on arrival with a lovely light cocktail and cake. 4.00 is high tea time every day with tea and cakes or pastries, whatever the chef makes on the day.
There are 3 types of villas and the ones with the Ocean view are just wonderful as are the ones set back amongst the 'jungle' of shrubs and trees - monkeys hurtle about most of day in small numbers and you can sit for ages just watching these funny little creatures antics. The bathrooms are open to the elements, so you can imagine my husbands comments when he said he was sat on the loo one morning and looked up to see a monkey on the wall sat just studying him - what a star. Food is brilliant with a choice for every meal. Drinks not expensive and well worth treating yourself to.
My husband needed urgent dental treatment and Elise contacted an English trained dentist in Stone Town and he was treated without any problem.
Bit of advise make sure you take loads of anti bite spray, they even bite through your clothes.
The sea is just paradise, warm and a lovely pale turquoise with almost white sandy beaches. The Dive school run from Unguja Lodge is excellent - from a plain old snorkel to full dive or wind surfing.
Honeymooners are treated to a special evening overlooking the sea and everyone at some point get a bottle of bubbly in their rooms to watch the fabulous sunset.
Have a massage, arranged by the Lodge - one of the best I have ever had!
Thank you again the family run Unguja Lodge - we hope to return one day.

Room Tip: Make sure you request an Ocean View if you want one.
