“Disappointing”
Reviewed 15 August 2013 via mobile

At a first glance, karamba seems ideal. Located on a picturesque, rocky coast of Zanzibar. The sunsets are idyllic. The cuisine is nice, so is the fine music selection, which adds to a pleasant common-space ambiance.

At a closer look however, Karamba renders several significant shortcomings that are just impossible to oversee:

- The rooms are not spotless clean;
- The wooden construction (including your bed frame) is constantly being eaten by noisy and let's be honest - very unappetizing - woodworms;
- The mosquito nets have holes in them;
- Drinking water is not provided in the room.
- The staff is nice and friendly but very poorly assigned. As a result, it is difficult to get what one asks for in the restaurant and peculiar cleaning utensils are left behind in peculiar places.

Karamba has disappointed me. If not for the proximity to beautiful ocean safari spots and the astonishing natural surroundings, I would leave with a (more) bitter aftertaste.

We thank you for your review. It will help us to improve due that we will follow up the exposed points to get back to our standard.
We feel sorry to have disappointed you and we would prefer that you had told to us during your stay at Karamba to have fixed it immediately.
During this August was Ramadhan and the stamina of our staff was not the same as always due their fasting programme.
We appreciate the patience of our guests that have understood the situation.

My partner and I spent 9 days at Karamba and we can highly recommend it if you are looking for the ultimate rest and relaxation. An authentic and atmospheric resort located in the heart of a Zanzibarian working village. The manager was warm and welcoming and all the staff were amazing with their beaming smiles and unfaultering helpfulness. Our bungalow was incredible with an outdoor shower and a mesmorising view over the beautiful turquoise water of the Indian Ocean, where if you're as lucky as we were, you'll spot a whale or two swimming past! The food was exceptionally great, being sourced locally, so fresh and organic, cooked to perfection! We asked to try a typically local dish one night which was currently not on the menu and this was served to us with grace and in the traditional style - an unforgettable foodie experience!

The local villagers were non-intrusive but happy to welcome us to their village. We were even invited into a local home when we were passing by to taste some food that was being cooked.

We took some vitally needed school supplies for the local school, such as pens, pencils, chalk and notebooks, for which the headmaster was very grateful and invited us on a tour of the school.

If you choose, there are so many excursions to do such as dolphin swimming, whale watching, snorkelling, sandbank picnic, national forest, Stone Town visit (an absolute must!), Prison Island and many, many more.

You can see all the love and passion for Karamba from Gemma, the owner. She has created a homely feeling and an incredibly relaxing environment where nothing is too much trouble!

We would highly recommend the sea view, hot stone massage by Paul, which left us feeling regenerated, revived and refreshed.

An unforgettably wonderful experience... A place to return to or a must for your 'Bucket List'!

If you don't mind frequent power outages, insects and lack of a beach this place is great. We enjoyed the beautiful swimming pool that overlooks the ocean and extremely delicious seafood. The staff were very friendly and the owner went out of her way to make us feel welcomed.

We just came back from an amazing trip to Tanzania, and there could not be a better way of finishing that a three days at Karamba in Kizimkazi. We enjoyed the rooms, very clean and confortable (we loved the open shower!!!) and the food!! We will miss the sunset in the beautiful garden and to relax in the pool, but not for long, we are already planning to come back. Very nice and helpfull staff, and Gemma, the manager, who made our stay perfect. Thank you all very much, and of course see you soon!!!

We've just got back from 4 nights at he Karamba and it was amazing. We travelled with our 21-month-old daughter and it was great for her too. The accommodation is lovely and clean within beautiful gardens. The beach is tidal, which was actually great for our daughter who could just sit in rock pool and play when the tide was out. Alternatively the infinity pool is awesome with wonderful views of the ocean. It seems that every detail has been thought of, including the design of the pool which is just perfect for relaxing and has has a gradual slope to get in, like entering the ocean.
The way the resort is run is geared to making you as relaxed and carefree as possible. Meals are ordered in advance so you just pitch up at your chosen time and your dinner is served, The menu also catered really well for my vegan wife and vege daughter. Every evening you just sign your receipt for the day and pay at the end of your stay, so need to have money on you at all. All the staff are so friendly and yet unobtrusive - and they were great with our daughter.
Having the small village nearby is great too, and makes you feel like you're not just staying on a resort that could be anywhere. In fact you can just while away the time watching fishermen go about their business or the women bashing coconut husks to make ropes. Overall this is a beautiful place with a lovely atmosphere - we'd definitely go back!!

We were not accommodated in the bungalows, but we took advantage of the Paul's massage and we've had food almost everyday in the hotel's restaurant. From plenty dishes that I've tried the preferred one was fish curry and seafood platter containing lobster, tuna fish and prawns with the company of the chapati bread. Before the meal is possible to relax yourself in front of the fire made by the masai working there. Regards to Leteto!
