Happy helpful staff and a very nice & clean room

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Apr 2012
Have just stayed at the Ubonburi. We came across it when our nutty tut tut driver took us on a ride (nothing horrible about the driver he was just very eccentric!). We walked in to the hotel. Were greeted so very warmly and shown two rooms. Were told that the room we wanted was 1,140 per night, inc breakfast. We handed over the money and the reception guy kindly offered a discountand would only take 1,000. We had already asked for a late checkout as we were on the overnight train the next day (not till 7:30pm). The late checkout till 5pm was free also. The room was lovely and fresh. Yes the sheets were a tad holed, but CLEAN. We went to the restaurant but decided to eat in the room. The waiter was so apologetic that it took an hour (but you just imagine all the running around it took to get our food to us, I bet there was a frantic rush around the town for fresh ingredients!). As for KashiG's comment regarding the staff in the restaurant not speaking English... - check your ticket, you went to another country for a reason! To experience culture maybe / to meet local people who try so hard to please - take a phrase book and give it a go. You may not get exactly what your ideal meal would be but have an exchange with people and a laugh and you will have a fantastic night. I will concede that the hotel needs attention, but this is Thailand and unless you wrap yourself in a bubble then you will not tick all your preconceived boxes for 'ideal'. The breackfast was very nice. My huge thanks would be to the staff. We checked out of the room and hung about using the internet in the lobby (no music at all, just lovely offers of making us more comfortable by the staff), we popped our rucksacks on our backs and thanked the staff. The lady behind the desk offered to take us in the golf cart to the end of the road and was most insistant (free). We declined as we are happy to walk but the offer was so genuine and caring. You can walk to the train station, takes about 15mins, if you are happy to take the short cut and hop over the train lines. Yes I would recommend this place. We paid 1,000bhat for our night / breakfast and free late checkout. I think for a day chilling by the large pool it was worth 1,500bhat. The staff (to quote) were priceless...

Room Tip: We had a room on the ground floor overlooking the pool.

This hotel was extremely overpriced and poor quality - the worst we stayed in in a 5 week trip in Thailand. Run down, need of many repairs - in the rooms and grounds. Pool was falling apart. Employees were sweet but unprofessional. One of the two light bulbs in the room was burnt out and we asked for a replacement for 24 hours and never got one.
Hotel is about 1.5 km from the center of town, but not walk-able. The hotel charges 150 bhat ($5 US right now) to drive you.
There is no wi-fi anywhere but in the lobby where a horrible looping soundtrack plays making it almost impossible to be there.
Food was mediocre at best. No one in the restaurant spoke English so it was hard to ask about items on the menu.
We went to this hotel because we went to the candle festival in Ubon and there was little avaiable, so unless you're desperate, don't go. Final gripe--this was one of the only hotels in Thailand that insisted that a 7 yr old child have his own bed - and charged an extra $35 a night for a cot with blood stained sheets. Seriously, for over $100 a night, this was really disappointing.

Nothing to fancy, but comfortable and free WiFi - but you need car/transport to get to the food market..
