First of all, you have to work to get here, as the spot is at the top of a long, dusty (probably muddy in green season) road, so four-wheel-drive is recommended. Once here, you will be treated to a jaw-dropping view. The sunset is unbelievable! We were equally blown away by our superior room, with its own balcony from which we occasionally saw monkeys swinging from the trees. The room was spacious and very attractive. The grounds are extremely well-kept, and the pool a treat. We commented to each other that we have never used a pool more than this hot, hot location!

This time of year outdoor activities are best early in the morning later in the day. I have a feeling that the trail system is at its best in rainy season, when the mangrove swamp is flooded and the area is lush, green, and has an abundance of birds. As it was, we preferred the area by the river, where you can rent kayaks and take a phenomenal boat tour with an enthusiastic guide. An attractive beach is a short hike away, and others within driving distance.

Service was very good, though we tend to value friendliness and genuine warmth over service; this was a bit lacking. Regina has a lovely smile and was pleasant, which somewhat made up for her husband's coolness.

The food was very good. The restaurant is closed one day a week, so check before you arrive.

Overall, a very good choice in the Nosara area.

We wish we had stayed during our stay. We were the first to arrive before sunset. The restaurant was booked for dinner, but we were able to sit on the patio for cocktails and appetizers until after sunset. We did not see the rooms, but the view, gardens and hotel dining room is beautiful.

Lagarta was the best place we stayed during our three weeks in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Regina and co are on hand to help book day trips, to answer questions and to help make your stay enjoyable. We stayed one night at the standard room and one in the superior. The standard room was nice and quiet and we had a top floor, but you can feel a bit voyeuristic on the balcony as you overlook the people sunning below you. The superior room was fabulous and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting on my porch, in my rocking chair, listening to the howler monkeys and chirping of geckos. The bed was also extremely comfortable. I did not want to leave. I'd recommend Lagarta to anyone looking to stay somewhere where the owners truly care about their guests AND the environment. The food is also delicious - you cannot go wrong with a meal overlooking the Pacific. I also recommend doing the bird tour - the guide is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and I got some great photos.

Room Tip: Top floors have a nicer view of the ocean.

What a spectacular view. Perfect to watch the sunset. Nice finger food, cocktails/drinks and appetisers sold at the sunset bar but it's all about the view here. Go at sunset or during the day for lunch to lap up this scenery.

We stayed at Lagarta Lodge for four nights in June 2012. First of all, because it was the "wet" season (although we had very little rain), we had the place almost to ourselves. It's a great place to stay and I have zero complaints. The location is amazing: perched on a hill overlooking the ocean and the Biological Reserve. You can have dinner or cocktails and watch the best sunset in town. Regina and Amadeo are lovely and accommodating hosts. We stayed in two "superior" rooms in the newer (2010) building, and they were clean and well-kept. The breakfasts were great and the room rates were extremely reasonable. I loved getting up early and sipping coffee while enjoying the view. You can hike down into the reserve from just off the dining area (which we did twice). We saw amazing wildlife, including trees filled with howler monkeys. I can't say enough good things about this property.

Room Tip: Get a Superior room, it's worth it. The AC came in very handy.

We did not stay here but went for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was wonderful. It reminded me of breakfasts in Germany with the bread and butter, meats and cheeses and the fresh fruit. They also served eggs, bacon, rice and beans and pancakes to order. Everything was yummy. All that for $8. Very reasonable The owners were very friendly. They were so nice to us when they found out that we were celebrating our anniversary. Great sunset viewing location.

Other guests who were staying there said that the rooms were very nice, clean and with great views.

We spent 3 nights here and loved the Lodge. The owners are hands-on and lovely; the breakfast buffet and cooked-to-order choices were amazing; the room was lovely but the weather was so hot we couldn't get it cool (make sure you book a/c room); the sunset bar was great and the views from the Lodge are wonderful. Stay here if you go to Nosara on the Pacific Coast. Lagarta Lodge has it's own private reserve which is definitely worth the walk BEFORE breakfast - it makes breakfast so worthwhile .....

Room Tip: Book an a/c room unless you are prepared for the heat to build and the room to get rather stuffy. A...
