If you 'simply' love the water, want to achieve a goal, have stamina and energy and crave a holiday that will challenge body and soul, Surf Simply is the place for you...beginner or experienced surfer your needs will be met and you will achieve great things...
If you want to just lie on the beach or by a pool all day this is not for you!
It pains me to write this because I don't want the place to get booked up (I think another reviewer has expressed the same!) but how can I not recommend Surf Simply...it is quite 'simply' Awesome!
I've been an occasional, and frankly rubbish, surfer for about 7 years...I've had MANY lessons in my time...I've visited Surf 'lodges/schools/camps/surfaris' around the world...NOTHING compares to Surf Simply. Ru Hill and his band of merry teachers (the emphasis being on great teachers, not just great surfers!) have developed a 'simply' incredible coaching method - there is something to meet everyone's learning style with practical and theory sessions combined.
Let's face it, surfing can be daunting - it's 'cool' and scary right?! Only for the beautiful people? Think again! I am overweight and of average fitness, so yes at first it felt a little intimidating, but within the first session I was soon put at ease, felt less self concious and was up for the challenge. My coach, Graham, quickly became a friend as well as my font of all knowledge for the week - we had such a laugh and I learnt LOADS from him - 'simply' put; he definitely had the measure of me and wasn't going to let me wimp out!
The practical surf sessions were challenging but fun and 2 sessions of 2 hours a day is enough time for you to perfect what you are learning, to tire you out but not kill you! The theory is engaging and SO useful...I especially found the pool sessions a revelation! Why has no one taught me how to turtle roll or paddle properly and efficiently before?! Thanks Jessie!
I have always found yoga to be an essential tool in helping me surf - it builds strength and flexibility, gives you methods to employ to stay calm (which you need when those big waves are crashing overhead!) and allows time for physical and mental recovery and relaxation. Francella is a beautiful, creative and intuitive Yogini...I LOVED the yoga sessions...beginner or advanced you will gain so much from this 'simply' magical hour or so each day.
And then there is the food...(I mentioned my weight, I'm an expert!) Do not go to Surf Simply to go on a diet, you will 'simply' not be able to resist the culinary majesty of this place...but don't worry, the food is, as you would expect, super healthy! Sarah and Dani do a wonderful job in the kitchen at meal times and Lulu's muffins are delicious beyond description... You will eat in some of Nosara's quite basic but pretty fabulous restaurants over the week, and for those moments when you just need to kick back there is a fridge full of beer and wine from which you can 'simply' help yourself!
What makes any travelling experience special is always the people...I was not disappointed on this score! My fellow 'pupils' were fabulous people - I think any group at Surf Simply will work because the numbers are kept sensible (you won't get lost in a crowd), you receive personal coaching and everyone is there wanting to get the most out of the challenge - your desire to learn to surf or improve what you already know binds you together. As for the staff, what an AMAZING bunch...Ru has built a team that is customer focused, attentive, friendly and highly qualified in their own area of expertise be it the surf instructors, the chef, the resort management, the yoga, the massage, the photography or the cleaning - all an essential part of the team and all with one goal, to give you the best holiday of your life.
Finally I have to mention the central protagonist in this amazing drama...Costa Rica! This was my first time in Central America and I went to Surf Simply at the start of 6 weeks exploring the region. Costa Rica offers beautiful scenery, crystal clear sand and sea, rainforest delights and more exotic creatures than you ever knew existed, so try and stay on after your Surf Simply experience to explore more of this wonderful country (and of course practice what you have learnt in the water!) If you get the chance to wander further afield be sure to take it; Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua are on your doorstep - these were the other countries I visited, far less developed than Costa Rica but all offering an abundance of riches beyond the commercial...life's true riches...and not to be missed!
So don't all rush at once or else there won't be space for me to return...but I 'simply' can not recommend Surf Simply enough - I can confidently promise you won't be disappointed! Enjoy!
