“Great place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2012

we have had a very nice stay in this hotel. The room was very big with many windows, nice decorations, we could park the car just next to it. during the night you hear the jungle noises and in the morning the monkeys, that's all I ask in Costa Rica ! the swimming pool is extremely clean and clear, we had a great time refreshing in it. The beach is 200meters and very nice !
The restaurant has many different traditional swiss decoration which is quite nice and the food was ok. The owner were very nice as well, they just have unfriendly dogs but that's not a problem.
Good time.

The location is pretty good with the rear section of the lodge ending in a short path to the beach. Few people swim there, there are some rocks close to the shore and perhaps a risk of rip currents, You'have to walk about 200m left to a small bay, nice place, other people swim and surf there, and there is a small soda. My advice is to have some sort of transport to dine in the nearby town.
The lodge is a sad story. It once was a hip place, with a Pirata bar and night life. There is a small heated jacusi, a very nice swimming pool, and the garden is fantastic. But time has outrun the facilities and not the least the owners, who really would prefer not to be disturbed in their daily routine. It seems they would rather attend their spotless garden and enjoy their memories of those good old days. They largely achieve that. When we came, the place was deserted, an unfriendly wathdog was howling breaking the eiry silence. My daugher found spider web on her pillow and a general overhaul of those rooms is long overdue. We only saw one other couple on the premises the two nights we stayed there.
The favorite visitor is German speaking, ideally of Swiss nationality, I think Germans and Austrian nationalities are also welcome.
The lodge owner is fighting an increasingly hostile world, including his neighbours, in particular an American enviro-bandit next door, who is constructing a B&B and has cut down some trees on his plot, ruining the rain forrest and damaging the general wildlife. (Didn't the lodge owner himself cut down trees when he built his lodge? - dont even try to argue). The Costa Rican authorities leave a lot to be desired, etc, etc.
We all age (hopefully) and a visit there is a sad reminder that you have to exercise sound judgement in due time on when to retire, or the subtle push of ever more evident dysfunction will eventually press home that painful decision for you.
Not so long ago we stayed in Berlin with an old lady who ran her own small hotel. She was such a nice person, radiating optimism and a positive attitude to life. We sure missed that at Hotel Rancho Suizo Lodge - this is not a place that lifts your spirits.

We saw this hotel in our travel guide and decided to book a room online. We send a e-mail 2 days before going to Nosara. Nothing special was written on their website. When we arrived in Nosara, we paid a taxi to reach the hotel. We opened the fence and at the reception there was a note saying to ring the bell if nobody was there. This is what we did. A man arrived yelling at us. His first comment was to ask us where we are from. We are from hungary and Canada so we told him. We tried to tell him that we sent an e-mail to book a room, but he wasn't listening and was yelling at us that we don't have good manners. Good mannered people don't open a fence if this is closed and finally he said that we should really go to Europe to lear ngood manners. (as far as I know, Hungary is in Europe, but anyway). He yelled that they were closed and it should be obvious because the fence was closed.
It was written open on the wooden sign in front of the hotel and there was no automatic reply to our e-mail saying that they would be closed at that time nor a notice on their website.
Being so unfriendly and racist with customers, the owners don't deserve to have customers. The Nosara bed and breakfast not far from there was a friendly and quiet place!
