We took the bus from Santa Ana to the volcano. Sit on the right hand side for beautiful views over the lake on the way up. The bus arrived at about 9.30, giving an hour to grab some breakfast and some snacks from the comedor there. The trip started at 10.30, we were accompanied by a guide and two security officers, all of whom were very friendly and informative. It's a good walk up to the volcano crater, with gorgeous views on the way. The crater itself took our breath away, sweeping volcanic landscape with a picture perfect bright green, smoking lake. Absolutely stunning. We arrived back to base at about 2pm. As the bus back leaves at 4 we had a bit of hanging about, but apart from that it was a brilliant day out, all for about 12 dollars.

The hike is tough...1.5hr walk up hill. Wear good shoes. Travel when there is no cloud so you get the the views, not just a view of the crater. Overall, worth a visit.

The hike to the top of the volcano Santa Ana is worth it. It is an easy walk and you get rewarded with beautiful views. Take into account that for the entire hike you have to pay around $9(you pay it in 4 different locations).

We did a day hike of Santa Ana as an excursion from the Royal Decameron resort. It was a perfect vacation hike - a good workout with amazing views but not too strenuous, and accessible to a wide range of people. If you can walk for 4 hours you can handle this hike.

We had an overkill of escorts (a guide from the resort and one from the national park, plus a few police armed with machine guns), but it was good to have locals to talk to and ask questions of. They were very knowledgeable.

This was a moderately easy hike up the Santa Ana volcano, totally worth it. The crater lake is a beautiful green and from the top you can actually see another beautiful blue lake as well (Lake Coatepeque), and you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean in the other direction.

Also, the little place that makes food at the top serves great pupusas. So delicious, get one while you wait for the hike to leave in the morning. There is one guided hike daily and I believe it leaves at 11AM, so make sure you are there in time.
