Since we live not far away, we in summer walk the dog three times a week in the nearby forest and finish each time the walk at the Tavern, on the terrace. It is not really a restaurant in the usual sense of the word, but one can have a lot of snacks and even one real dish. the food is excellent. You should also go to the place if you are a real beer fan: they have many special beers from regional mostly unknown brewers. But they serve among the best Belgian beers, As a Belgian and a Belgian beer fan I must confess it is one of the places to be. A bit pricy though.
Re the service, it has improved tremendously compared to the past. In summer they still have a few students. But the one professional waitress is really ok and speaks fluently English. Do not forget that they close at 6 pm, which is a golden rule for the owners!
Furthermore, I would advise you to go to the place during the week when the place is less crowded. Although. To finish I have to stress the heavenly serenity of the place with a fantastic view on the meadows, orchard and the forest. Don't miss the castle (one cannot visit) and its beautiful park with, yes, a few sequoias.

The restaurant is part of the Museum celebrating the life and work of the late artist Jean-Michel Folon and the gentle personality of the artist extends to the restaurant as well. The venue is enshrouded by the same atmosphere of peace and serenity that are the hallmarks of Folon’s art.

Going back to the restaurant, it is set just outside the museum, facing a peaceful countryside with lawns where children can play (toys provided). The menu is sufficiently varied and the quality of food and service very good. The waitress was very friendly and tailored the menu to suit my gluten-free requirements. She even suggested an excellent gluten-free abbey beer and lavished information about each plate we mentioned.

Both the starters and the main course were excellent: well prepared and tasty. The monumental ice-creams were a befitting end to a very enjoyable meal. Very good value for money.

Definitely a place to try. You will not be disappointed in the least.

Unfortunately the staff let you forget about the idyllic frame of the Chateau de la Hulpe park.
We arrived, we wait like 20 minutes to order, then we directly ask the waiter to come. We wanted to order some hot chocolate and some gauffres...which is kind the basic stuff here in Belgium: no more gauffres, no more hot chocolate. So we ordered something else and we started waiting... and waithing... and waiting... We solicited the waiter, and we continued waitng... It was almost dark: a bit difficult to get out from the park in the dark, so I went to the waiter and sais that if our stuff wouldn't have been on our table in 5 minutes, we would have left. The waiter not even considered me, so we went away before remain stuck in the park. This is just one of the practical exemple of the proverbial service oriented Belgian attitude.

After a lovely walk with my visiting family around the Chateau we decided to stop off at this lovely cafe for some drinks and ice-cream. The time was 5.45pm so before sitting at a table my husband who speaks perfect French asked the young man serving if they were still open for drinks and ice-cream. Yes, was the reply, no problem so we sat down, he gave us menus and we chose our order. After waiting 15 minutes a young lady came out of the restaurant and said they were no longer taking orders as it was 6pm and they were closing. We informed her that we had been told by another member of staff they were open and taking orders and actually had been waiting 15 minutes, unhappily she took are order. Ten minutes later came two drinks, another five minutes later the young man appeared to tell us, that the milk shake orders and the ice-cream orders could not be completed as the the kitchen was now shut. Understandably were were a little upset having wasted half an hour for nothing and suggested they could do with a little more organisation and customer service. The young man became extremely aggressive and walked away from the table cursing us in French, knocking chairs in his wake. It was an appalling incident and left us feeling like criminals. Our only wish is he had told us they were shut in the first place. Will never go again and do not recommend, the service historically has always been bad but this was the pits!
