Le Grand Bassin
Reviewed 9 January 2014

Le Grand Bassin is probably one of the most scenic places to stay along the Canal du Midi, with terrific views and bargain prices. My room with a terrace was 60 Euros including breakfast for 2! There are many things that Le Grand Bassin is not, but you won’t find a place much nicer than this for the money, regardless of your budget. If you are bicycling the Canal du Midi, you won’t find a more perfect location in town.

I was a bit skeptical of the place the day we arrived by bicycle. From the outside, it is a little rough around the edges, but the minute that you step inside the B&B, you are impressed with the warmth and charm of the place. Le Grand Bassin is about a 10 minute walk from town, and is located right off the bike path along the Canal du Midi.

Le Grand Bassin provides basic accommodations with a great location and beautiful views. Rooms are clean, beds very comfortable and breakfast basic. We never met the owner Giles, but my interactions with him regarding reservations were pleasant and professional. Mme. Avinzac cannot speak much English, but she is helpful, very pleasant and welcoming. If it’s a day where the sun is out, you will find her sitting in the courtyard reading a book in the sun as she loves enjoying the Languedoc sun!

Restaurants are an easy walk from the B&B, and the town is full of restaurants specializing in Cassoulet, a specialty of the region. Since we had such a terrific view from our room, we opted to have a picnic on our terrace. You could easily spend several days exploring Castelnaudary and the surrounding area, and there is no more perfectly located and affordable place in town to stay than Le Grand Bassin

Room Tip: There is only one room with a terrace, if it is available, ask for it as it is a wonderful bonus to...

We booked this on the strength of previous reviews on this site and at first glance this B&B on the banks of the Grand Bassin is not particularly prepossessing. However, afterwards we agreed that this was probably the best B&B that we stayed in enroute from Bilbao across the south of France to Le Marche, Italy. It is well decorated, with unfussy and good quality furnishings. The bed was on the firm side and so very comfortable for us. The room was spacious and, as with the ensuite, very clean. The ensuite was small with a shower cubicle but contained all the necessary items. We enjoyed the simple continental breakfast which was included in the price. Our hosts were relaxed and genial. A short walk aliong the path leads to a bridge across the canal to 3 restaurants and a wine 'cave'. We paid 65 euros in cash.

This b&b is perfectly situated right on Le Grand Bassin on the Canal du Midi. There is plenty of parking space and a short walk along the canal brings you to some waterside restaurants and the town itself. The grand bassin is very picturesque and the canal a wonderful place to walk along. Rooms in the b&b are spacious and well-equipped and, although the breakfast is fairly basic, the value for money is exceptionally good.

We stayed one night chez M. & Mme. Avinzac and it was delightful in every way. We arrived in the rain on a Sunday evening and Gilles offered to pick us up at the station. We chose to walk the short distance and we we're met and escorted to our rooms which were clean, comfortable and charming. Mme. Gave us great directions to the open air market and the supermarket the next day, where we purchased everything we needed for our weeklong canalboat trip, including some amazing fresh tapenades and breads. She even offered to come to town and pick us up after we did our shopping! Their guest house is right next to the Leboat base in Castelnaudary which made for a quickmtransfer from our lodgings to the boat. Wonderful experience!

We are so pleased we chose to stay at Le Grand Bassin. Gilles Avinzac and Madame Avinzac were very helpful and welcoming. Our room was lovely and the location of the hotel very convenient. We had dinner at Le Tirou which I would highly recommend. It was an outstanding meal with a memorable cassoulet. Thank you for a wonderful souvenir of our visit to Castelnaudary.

Gilles and his wife were very friendly and the house was lovely. The rooms were clean and beautifully decorated and we would have no hesitation in staying there again. We wanted to visit Carcassonne and Gilles recommended a good route to get there which avoided the busy roads. My wife had the best night's sleep of the entire trip there - what can be more important?

Liston out for the owl in the tree in the car park.

We booked 4 rooms via email with Gilles and I sent the requested deposit from Australia. He had said if too much trouble to transfer don't worry, which I thought was very trusting of him. We flew to Toulouse and then took a fast train to Castelnaudary . Le Grand Bassin, which is a lovely, old typically French house was less than a10 min walk from the station. We were met by our hosts and offered a drink which we sat in the garden and drank before being shown to our rooms The rooms were beautifully clean, nicely furnished and all had ensuite showers. Gilles had recommended and booked for us a local bar/restaurant which specialised in cassoulet, which was actually "invented" in Castelnaudary. We all slept like logs and met up for a typical French breakfast in the really nice dining room in the morning. We had booked 4 bicycles from a local company to cycle to Narbonne and then return to Castelnaudary by train. Gilles had kindly agreed to look after our bags while we were away for 5 days and for the hire company to collect their bikes from his house on our return as well as giving us the space to change clothes etc. His wife met us on our return gave us all a beer to drink and we had to force the money on her to pay for them. The 4 of us thought they were both delightful and charming hosts and their chambre d'hote a great place to stay.
