Set high above the Neckar River the hotel has a commanding view of the river and surrounding countryside. The hotel is adjacent to the 11c castle which is now in ruins although it still costs 3 euros to climb among them. If it is was situated in the UK one would not be allowed to enter for health and safety reasons. The hotel and restaurant occupy what was formerly the stables. Our room was quite small and was on two levels, it was clean and well decorated and had a wonderful view over the valley. The dining was layout was a bit odd with tables arranged in no particular order giving the impression that they were shoved into any empty space. There were only a limited number of table overlooking the valley and if you were seated in one of the oddly arranged tables it would to my mind be very satisfactory. We were seated with a window view towards the back of the dining room which had clearly not been used for some time as there were cobwebs hanging from the table lamp and an assortment of dead insects littering the window sill. Not surprisingly this took the shine off what limited ambience there was. The service wasn't particularly brilliant and the dinner was passable and over priced. No bread was offered with the meal and although we ordered the soup with garlic bread no bread arrived. Make sure you tell the waitress how you would like your meat done as they don't ask. The breakfast was just OK, the scrambled egg was cold and leathery and as the cold meats were left uncovered, tiny flies were in their element. The place could do with a lick of paint here and there and if more attention was paid to the quality of service and food as well as cleanliness and ambience it could be a first rate hotel as the views are stunning.

It appeared to me I was in wrong company here :-) Instead of travelling with my wife, I travelled with a couple of my friends. For a bunch of guys, the romantic side of this hotel is of course put aside...

The setting is very nice. It's clear it's very old, it has the charm, but it still functions well. Our room had two bedrooms, small stairs, carpet. It didn't had A/C, but once it started to rain it cooled down well. The hotel offers you wi-fi, but inside the room and the walls it doesn't really work well.

We took a walk outside the castle area into the woods and it was nice. There are marked paths for longer walks too. We liked that bit.

We ate at the restaurant in the evening. Even if it was some buzz in the afternoon there was only one or two other companies at the restaurant besides us. Rather quiet then. The restaurant gives a nice view on the river and neighboring village below. Food was well-prepared. Also, in the morning at the breakfast - good selection of food and drinks, oh, and the view.

I'm not exactly sure is worth all the money, but nevertheless an unforgettable hotel.

We stayed for our anniversary in a room that looked out over the Neckar valley. It was truly wonderful in that finally the sun came out and we were able to climb the castle walls and look out over the valley. We did a little wine tasting. The food and service were excellent. The sun made this day standout as we were doing our trip during the major rains of May/June 2013. Last home of Goetz von Berlishingen, Goetz of the iron hand of Goethe fame.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a schoene aussicht.

We stayed here for one night on a journey from the South Tyrol to Cologne. The Neckar valley is beautiful, though there are numerous industrial buildings along the river. We stayed in the hotel, across the courtyard from the restaurant. The rooms were comfortable, if a little dark. The balconies looked out over woods, so gave no real view, but were a pleasant place to sit. The bathrooms were adequate, but could have done with updating.
The restaurant's best feature is its panoramic view over the river and valley. The food, though good, was fairly heavy and rather expensive for what it was. The only "plain" item on the menu to appeal to my teenagers (too old for a children's menu, which they do have), a schnitzel which was cooked in a great deal of butter, as were the potatoes. The hotel and restaurant are in a beautiful setting, high above the valley, which has the disadvantage that there isn't really anywhere else to eat unless you want to get back into your car. You should either plan to eat a major meal in the restaurant, go very hungry and realise that you are paying for the view (3 of us ate as my husband was unwell, so three main courses, two soft drinks, 1 glass of wine and two bottles of water added up to a little over 85 euros) or take a picnic to eat on your balcony! Breakfast was also in the restaurant, same view, good food, excellent service and all included in the price of the room. I'd happily use this hotel again for an overnight stop, but probably wouldn't use it for a long stay.

We previously stayed here for 1 night in September 2012, see review. This year, again on our way back from Italy, we chose to stay again. This time the terrace was not open, unsurprisingly given the weather. We had a choice of 2 rooms, one in the main building in a type of tower and the other, which we chose, in the building opposite the restaurant. The price was 30 euros more than last September for B&B. As before it was comfortable and we had a good meal in the restaurant but I was a little disappointed to find that nothing had changed i.e. no safe, no air-con, no little extras in the bathroom. As last year, I do not feel this is quite up to 4* standard. If staying longer, it is possible to explore the old castle for a few euros, and wine is available for purchase.

Room Tip: Rooms in the tower overlook the river, those in the bulding opposite have a terrace and look out ont...

We went here for cake and drinks with family. There are beautiful views from the restaurant overlooking the valley. We then toured the castle. I believe we were the only people there, which was lovely. Lots of beautiful areas and overlooks to see. The forrest surrounding the castle is also gorgeous for a walk.

We enjoyed our quiet stay at the Burg Hornberg, a definite pro to visiting off season. We went at the end of February where there were maybe a few business travelers and us, so pretty quiet. Elizabeth at the front desk was a gem helping us navigate to our next destination and answering many questions (spoke fluent English).
Our waiter was great by taking the initiative to check with the chef and getting us dinner though they had just closed for the night. Our room was nice with wood ceilings and stairs on up to the bed. We had a view of the Neckar Valley, which I'm sure is even better in the summer. There is a lot of reconstructing/refurbishing going on at the moment in the actual castle, looks like there is still a lot to be done there.
We stayed in one of the rooms above the restaurant, I would recommend those (didn't see any others to comment on though). Thanks
