up and over the hill (mountain?) not for the faint-hearted or well-dressed! popular nudist beach but not obligatory to shed everything (might be better if some people covered up to be perfectly honest ;). Small cafe/bar on the beach and loos; only accessible on foot so very peaceful. Red sand? not so sure it was actually red ... but it is reddish and is proper sand as opposed to the shingle of Matala beach, especially if the wind is whipping up in Matala as it's more sheltered on Red Beach. Well worth a day soaking up the rays there on the cheap sunbeds (take water for the walk!!)

Well worth the short but steep walk this beach is stunning and quieter than Matala beach. There is a small cafe and umbrellas on the beach but if you walk further along the cove you come across the nudist beach. Make sure you take time to buy some clay from the cafe for 1.50 euro and cover yourself before diving into the sea.

a hidden gem of a beach with a shabby beach bar serving the best Mojitos i have ever had! Nudists welcome, crystal clear water. Take food.

My days in Matala were fantastic. The town is small but very lovely, with all shops/cafe/tavernas/restaurants/pubs/clubs around the plaza or along the coast. You will need to do a little hiking to reach the red sand beach. Just follow the signs and you could have a nice view over matala beach on one side and red sand beach on the other on the top of the hill. The red sand beach is not crowded and is a nudist-friendly beach. There is a tiny taverna there where you can get some cold drinks before they used up all the ice. There's no toilet on the beach, but you may find a couple of umbrellas to rent. The water is very clean, and good for swimming. And you can stay on the beach until 8pm to see the sunset as the bay is facing west. A great place to go!

Red beach was the best of the beaches we visited in our 2 week stay on Crete. After being disappointed by Agia Galini beach, and spending lunch time on Matala beach we decided to hike across the rock to Kokkino beach. We were wearing just flip flops, but with a bit of care we managed to pass that hill in half an hour. The view from the top was great and the beach itself spectacular. There were not a lot of people, some of them nudists, but a lot of space for everyone.

The beach had very mild sand, shallow entrance to the sea and the water was much warmer than on other surrounding beaches.

We had spent all the afternoon on Kokkino beach and enjoyed the sun setting down. It is a very romantic place for people with free spirit. We definitely recommend it while you stay in Matala.
