“More like a hostel ”
Reviewed 25 April 2014 via mobile

Not what I expected.

It looks like a nice hotel. Nice lobby. Nice service. Nice breakfast restaurant. Nice park across the road. Nice area in this small town.

But I swear it is a hostel in disguise...

I enter the room and there are two single beds squashed together, a tiny LCD TV, and a bathroom with a shower over the bath.

There are no amenities. No kettle. No iron/board (even when I ask for one). No mini bar or fridge. No toiletries in the bathroom except a tiny bar of black soap.

Parking is on the street (if you are lucky).

Would I go back? No. It was for my partner's conference that we were put there.

We stayed one night at Hotel Imperio. We chose to stay in Torres Vedras for two reasons: (1) after arriving at Lisbon at 6 pm we didn’t want to go too far, but we DID want to get clear of Lisbon; (2) part of our trip was devoted to the Peninsular War and the Lines of Torres Vedras.

Warning: As we already knew, Torres Vedras is mostly not a very attractive town.

Good location in the small center of town that is 98% of the “nice” part of town; adjacent to a small park with a handsome monument dedicated to the Peninsular War. Not hard to find. We booked ahead through the hotel (direct). When we booked, we requested a view of the castle, which we got. We also got a private balcony which was a bonus. Secure free parking two blocks away is a plus, but WARNING – you MUST have a compact or smaller vehicle. THere is a good place at the front of the hotel for loading / unloaindg luggage. Both receptionists (check-in and check-out) were friendly and helpful, and had good English.

The hotel is scrupulously clean. Furnishings are basic but nice. The room was of a good size, and as we would come to expect, the bathroom was nicely fitted out in marble and tile. Only basic-quality toiletries were provided. I rated the mattress as only a C-. Free wifi Internet worked well.

The connected bar / restaurant / café is a big plus. Tired from our journey, we ate in the hotel restaurant and we very much doubt that we would have done any better anywhere else in Torres Vedras. The meal was excellent, VERY reasonably priced. The proprietor has an outstanding list of mostly reasonable wines, and no less than six pages of ports. We stuck to the house port and it was outstanding, 3 Euro for a generous glass. Breakfast, served buffet-style in the restaurant , was also good and, for us at least, was included in the base room price.

So why not five stars? (1) One of us found their mattress uncomfortable[rating C-] (in typical European style, the bed was two single mattresses put into a single frame; the other of us found the mattressOK); (2) no Kleenex-type tissues provided – we needed to use the toilet paper; (3) loved the balcony, but a section of the floor was so rotted that one of us got a bad fright. This is an accident, possibly serious, waiting to happen.

we had a nice room at the top (5th floor) room 506 with a big terrasse and lovely vue. Terrible to discover later that from 10.30 am to 10.30 pm a terrible noise of ventilation makes the room a place to escape from and the noise on the terrasse is even worse.
We asked the hotel to do something, they knew already the problem but could not stop the ventilation of the restaurant and no other room available (after checking with anoter room same floor, it was the same problem)
Better check at booking time to have a quiet room
Otherwise, nice hotel,

The hotel Imperio is situated to the center of Torres Vedras. The rooms are spacious enough and clean. The breakfast buffet was very interesting, bat could have bigger variety. The service was very good and the staff was very-very friendly.

We stayed here for 2 separate nights when we were en route to/back from the island of Madeira. To get to Madeira, we decided to drive to the Lisbon airport (about 40 minutes away from the hotel) and we parked there in long-term parking. The hotel told us ahead of time that we could leave our car in their underground parking lot, too, if we wished to do that when we were in Madeira. As well, the hotel thoughtfully let us leave our large luggage with them (locked up) while we were away for the 4 nights. The Imperio is right in the centre of this small and VERY attractive city that is surrounded by low hills. The hotel location is handy to pleasant walks, restaurants and shops. The city has a famous history - it's where Napoleon was halted in Portugal. The hotel has been newly renovated and it’s very clean, modern-looking and handsome inside and out. The service was very good at the desk and in the adjoining restaurant, too. Very good dinners are served. We had a tasty and generous breakfast (the breakfast is part of the nightly fee). English was spoken at reception and by the waiters in the restaurant, too, and that was helpful to us. Dinner service starts at 7pm. There is also a separate bar in another area. Our suite was conveniently set up, very clean and attractive. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was nice. The air on our floor was naturally fresh and pleasant, and there were no stale odours of cig smoke. There is smoking allowed in the separate bar area. Guests could use a computer that's in an enclosed cubicle on the main floor for 2 Euros for about 30-45 minutes. The parking lot is about 1-1/4 blocks away and it seemed quite safe. Only guests have a key to it. You can park in front of the hotel to drop off luggage and pick it up. There are about 2-3 spots to do that, but we managed quite well in spite of that. We would definitely stay there again, and yes, we would recommend it to others!

The hotel is located in the center of town, the rooms are a good size and very clean, the service is great and the food is even better. This hotel is the only hotel in the world - and I have seen a lot - in which I am very happy to eat both lunch and dinner. And all for very reasonable prices. But note, this is a 3 star hotel - it does not come with a lot of services and facilities.

This was our first visit to Império Hotel and for this stay we booked in the internet an executive room with queen bed. The hotel rooms are different in terms of size; some of them include a terrace and one a jacuzzi. Our room was located in the 5th floor but the space was not the expectable for an executive type room. However, it included a large terrace (sun deck) with two chairs, one table and one sun deck chair and castle view. The decoration is modern but not minimalist. Furniture and colors are influenced by the seventies with a modern touch. Walls and furniture in white color and a red chair... The TV is small and the channels – from cable TV- were totally disorganized. The bathroom is normally decorated for a 4 start hotel but the taps, showers and accessories are from GROHE and the amenities are of 5 star quality (from Ocean – Science et Mer). The hotel offers free internet access but in our case we found several difficulties in being connected continuously for more that 10 minutes…boring! The breakfast is normal as well as the service personnel. The hotel restaurant (BOC) serves fusion food with Mediterranean, African and Brazilian influence. A superb list of Portuguese wines is also available, unfortunately some of them not available in the stock. The guests can choose directly from the Enoteca of the hotel (located inside of the restaurant) the wine. In resume, a well located, comfortable and clean old hotel with a modern style (totally re-styled in 2008-2009) at good price, served by a good restaurant at reasonable prices.
