Spent a week here with Cosmos. Hotel very isolated, but superb scenery locally, and great walking. It is possible to get around on local buses, but not easy, and a car is recommended. Majority of guests were French, and also many Saga clients. Hotel clean and well maintained, staff all exceptionally good, but particularly Raimundo on reception, who was kind enough to give us a lift one day when he passed us at the roadside.
Food above average, plentiful and several choices, but not gourmet. Cosmos rep was never seen (apart from at airport on arrival) but Saga rep kindly assisted us with information, and the French company, Magellan, also had a charming team who were happy to let us join their activities if we chose to.
We struggled to find much info about local Levada walks, but at the airport on our return we found an article in a magazine that mentioned a new smartphone app that uses GPS to help you locate them, updated by University of Madeira.
Bearing in mind that we used some clubcard vouchers to pay half the cost, this was superb value for money.

Beautifull scenery. Memorable holiday. Quite isolated spot but the more we walked, the more we found to explore. Very scant informtion at the hotel but found some friendly fellow holidaymakers and we had fun finding out about the area. Food very average room clean but maybe neading a refurbishment within the next few months. We thought perhaps one week in the south of the island and one week spent in the north of the island would be even better! But you do not want to miss exploring the northern part of the island. We shall return.... Did not hire a car, but got about hiring taxis and using local buses.

Room Tip: room overlooking the sea

We loved this hotel. The food was amazing, sea views fantastic, and the staff were so friendly & helpful. The hotel is situated in the north of the island , in a very quiet area. We expect to go again.

I have just returned from this hotel having spent Christmas and New Year there. It was my second visit inside a year.
The beautiful location is totally unspoiled and is perfect for both serious and more casual walkers as well as photographers and artists. The village provides all the facilities one should need on such a holiday including supermarkets, pharmacy,ATM machine and post office. There is even a wifi hotspot! The local people are wonderfully welcoming and the local bus provides a cheap and interesting way to see the area and to reach higher locations from which to walk back to the hotel if you don't feel up to walking up the hills. The hotel provides a courtesy bus to take guests to nearby Sao Vicente.
The hotel itself is set on a sunny promontary and overlooks the sea and the coastline from Ponta Delgada to Porto Monitz. It is very clean, has good rooms and provides excellent, simple, fresh food. There is an indoor swimming pool, health spa and games area as well as an outdoor pool and sun terrace (Sadly the sunbeds are in dire need of replacement).
The staff are some of the best I have encountered anywhere in the world. Nothing is too much trouble. Most have been there for some considerable time and offer that personal service that is so lacking in many hotels.
Although I like to visit new destinations this will always be a place I will return to as often as I can.

hotel- good, rooms clean, great view (one side mountain other ocean)
staff - kind, helpfull, friendly
weather - spring all the time, few drops, a little bit of sun - but put sun cream on skin; we got burned
all inc and food - ok, variety of food wasn't big, but one could find, what was looking for - every day 2,3 different kinds of meat, fish...we are meateaters, so we do not know, what vegetarians would say about it:)
after a few franchmen shows - the all inc programm had few restrictions: one person - one drink etc. but you could live with that:)
about our french co-tourists, after that holiday I think I know, why English avoid them:))

about accousations that hotel is boring - for old people: we are young, and we did not complain. we took a car for two days - visited whole island, took a hotel trip to flower festival; took a bus to funchal
plenty to do if you want to do something, not just complaining

about cars - please, beware of old ones and if it is possible check: brakes and clutch...our car stopped in the middle of inclined nowhere, didn't want to climb back on the road:)) now it is funny, but back then wasnt's - so full insurance is needful
village is nice
can recommend hotel!

Room Tip: use sun cream; while on a car trip - take full insurance; in rooms above the main enter may have a b...

Visited the Monte Mar Palace again in March for a third time. Just as good as before with the same staff, usual excellent food and just as unspoilt. If you want a quiet relaxing stay in a great setting this is for you. If it is nightlife you want forget it.

Room Tip: This hotel faces the sea which is to the north so if you want some sunshine on the balcony then ask...

My wife and I booked this hotel as a quiet retreat for our Silver Wedding. It fitted the bill perfectly. It is in a tiny (but interesting) village, with a few shops and bars and a small harbour and church. The hotel also runs a shuttle bus to the nearby (10 minutes) village of Sao Vicente, a very pretty place with some interesting caves formed by volcanic activity - well worth a visit. The hotel itself is superb - huge beds, very well-appointed rooms and both indoor and outdoor pools. You will see criticism of the sunbeds on other reviews and some of them are dire, but they are replacing them a few at a time. Madeira itself is experiencing a tourist crisis and the hotel was only 20% occupied - with the private owner keeping all his staff he is doing the decent thing despite diminishing income and something has to go. The food is excellent, albeit the vegetables are normally overcooked to the n'th degree. However the salad bar is excellent and you will never be undernourished. With a four course waiter service meal at lunchtime offering salad, soup and a choice of either fish or meat, we were always replete. As this is a hotel review, it gets ten out of ten. The bad bit is the location. The hotel is totally isolated apart from the above small villages. It is possible to travel by local bus, and a trip to Arca de Sao Jorge takes about 50 minutes and allows you to experience the death-defying roads, with a half hour turn-around. However, travelling to Funchal takes 1hr 50 on the 0725 bus and 1hr 15 on the 1245. The return journey leaves at 1900 and takes 1hr 15. There is a Sunday bus that leaves Funchal at 1505 and takes 1hr 40 - if you can get to Funchal some other way it was one of the highlights of our trip - the bus winds its way up impossible hills and around sharp hairpin bends and climbs really high - it is not for the faint-hearted but sightseeing-wise it was superb. Other than that, you definitely need a car. Locally-hired ones come up at about 40 Euro a day - we got one in Funchal for 20. One suggestion would be to get the 1245 bus to Funchal and arrange to return the car on a Sunday and get the 1505 bus back (see above). The car hire places are in the new part of Funchal and we got ours from a company called Insularcar - it is up a side street called Rua da Casa Branca - 100 metres up from the beach road on the right. Driving is not for the faint-hearted - we drove up past Monte towards the second-highest mountain, which is not sign-posted, and it was a hugely stressful experience. Getting to the turn-off for the mountain and finding it closed due to snow was infuriating. Ponta Delgada, being at the north of the island, tends to be cloudier and windier - in 14 days we only had two sunny ones and quite a bit of rain. So: all in all, if you want to get away from the hurly-burly of the big town, great, but if you want some life around you it isn’t for you.

Room Tip: Get one looking West as far away from the lifts as possible and as high up as possible - numbers 23...
