On reading reviews on this hotel, when I was booking, was a little off putting because of the reviews of the sunbeds. However I can assure everyone reading this that the sunbeds have been REPLACED. You will not find a more scenic and beautiful place anywhere. The views are the most wonderful views we have experienced in all our travels. Hotel and staff are wonderful. Nothing is to much trouble. The food excellent. The Saga rep. Jake Short made our holiday with his varied entertainment programme and always on hand if you needed to ask anything.. He is real asset to the company.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms have excellent views. We were on the 2nd floor.

Just back from a weeks stay and the scenery is oustanding. The hotel is very good and the staff are some of the best I have come across on holiday. They are very friendly and efficient with a special mention to the restaurant and bar staff.
I travelled with Cosmos and did not see a representative apart from at the airport. However, I would like to give a special mention to Jake, the Saga rep who was extremely helpful and answered any questions I might have. This young man, although quite new to this position, is outstanding.
The entertainment is the only area which could be mproved upon but maybe the lack of it was due to the underoccupancy at the hotel.

We've just returned from a week's stay here with our 10 month old twin boys and felt I had to give this hotel a little praise on here. We had a fantastic time in Madeira for our first family holiday with the little guys and the hotel was a great place to set as our base.

Ok the hotel is stuck a little in the 90's decor wise (if it's a Sanderson or W you're looking for this isn't it!), but having said that our room was fantastic! Suite room 108 - double height atrium, spiral staircase, hot tub, separate room for the babies and even a gym! The best part of course was the view though with our own private garden overlooking the sea and stunning scenery.

What really made our stay here so nice though was the staff and in particular the restaurant staff. So nice, always so welcoming. We were a little wary of bringing two babies on holiday with us, they make A LOT of mess at the dinner table - however we need't have worried. Waiters and waitresses always keen to say hello and treat them with real kindness. Big thank you!

The surrounding area is quiet, you'll need a car if you want to explore. We got one for 3 days and visited Funchal (weren't that impressed, partly because the only restaurant with high-chairs we could find was a Pizza Hut!!! and partly because it just didn't seem that nice a place. If you want a city break go to Barcelona or something...we chose Madeira for the scenery and relaxation). What did impress us though not too far from the hotel (about 30km up the coast) was Port Moniz - most amazing natural swimming pools ever! Nice town, go there.

The pool at the hotel was really nice, most amazing views whilst swimming. Good choice of food on offer most days, decent breakfasts, lunch and dinner.
Only downsides were the entertainment which catered to the over 60's though it didn't particularly bother us as we spent most evenings putting babies to sleep and sitting outside our room watching the sunset with some drinks. Also perhaps they could install wi-fi throughout the hotel, not just in the bar area.

Overall a great holiday, if we return to Madeira we'd stay here again.

My Wife and I booked for a weeks holiday at this hotel via SAGA,we chose it for the location on the North coast for a relaxing weeks break.A taxi (complements of SAGA) conveyed us from the Airport to the Hotel in approx 1hour.The reception staff were very friendly and within a few minuets we were in our room (435).The balcony looked out across the pool area out to sea, with a great view of the rugged coast, and the Sun highlighting the blue sea.We went on all inclusive,(drinks and 3 meals a day)The restaurant, buffet style, had a high standard of food with plenty of choice at all 3 meal times.A wide selection of drinks always available. One or two things not quite right.
if you need a brolly round the pool you have to leave a deposit at reception and keep your brolly in your possession until you leave and it is quite in a lonely position on the island, well away from the high life of Funchal .One very well deserved complement goes to the local Saga rep.A young man Jake Short.very attentive always there for any help and advice.A good sense of humor! we pulled his leg about being a young man and he took all the leg pulling and jokes in his stride.Very well done Jake you helped to make the holiday

This hotel is very well run,in a fabulous location. The restaurant is very well managed, has a nice atmosphere and beautiful views. However, the food is a little limited in selection offered. Entertainment staff are a weak link...loud and overbearing music when it is clear that the majority of guests would prefer some peace and quiet to enjoy the fabulous scenery. Room was fine, spacious with very good storage. Lovely walks in locality.

Spent a week at Monte Mar Palace with a friend.
The hotel is fine, but nothing to write home about.

The best thing about the hotel is the location, overlooking the sea and cliffs. Great for a relaxing holiday.

The room was fine but smelt like it had been smoked in previously. Also the hairdryer was broken and had been stuck together with sticky tape! The jacuzzi / hot tub was stone cold.

The food is average, perfectly edible but nothing special.

Overall the word that describes this hotel is average - it was fine and we had a great trip, but there was certainly nothing special about the place.

I've read all the good & bad reviews here about the hotel and agree with almost all of them, so it definitely will come down to what type of holiday you're looking for. If it's sun you're after this isn't for you. Our week consisted of sun for not even half a day. If it's socialising and nightlife you want, forget it. The hotel is so remote and travelling is not easy without a car.

This is a really difficult review - whilst i found the hotel all ok (not great, but all ok) it just wasn't anything to write home about. I'll try to explain;

I travelled with my mum and sister so just the girls, and we had two rooms. Having read how helpful all the staff were i agree mostly with the exception of EVERY receptionist we came across. We didn't see our rep for the whole of our week, so our next best option was receptionist advice. Their "help" ranged from ignorant to rude through to indifference (ouch - true though). We literally couldn't be bothered to try with the receptionists about the (not important) issues in the rooms, ie that the air con didn't work (YES - even with the patio doors closed) and the bathroom extractor fan didn't work (YES - even with the bathroom door closed). The other thing we found unhelpful was fact that we only had one room key between 3 of us for 2 rooms - talk about a problem (no - we're not joined at the hip!) and one that the receptionists didn't seem to appreciate. Think about it!?!

Anyway, the food, etc. We were all inc and it was all totally fine. Yes, there is a limited choice, but it's a small hotel so this shouldn't be a surprise. I agree with others that sometimes it was a bit of a bun-fight at the buffet, but i think that's the guests' fault. Only thing i'd say is that the mealtimes are very (VERY) structured and there is no option for alternatives or snacking. Same about the bars. They open/close religiously which is a bit silly - for example, a lot (40 or so) French guests were watching a rugby match on the TV and the nearest bar was closed, the open one being on the floor below. I thought how silly it is that the hotel don't open up the nearest bar and these guys could have a right old time. Nope - the bar stayed firmly shut until it's official opening time of 9.00pm. Just silly and not really considering the enjoyment of the guests.

In other all inc's i've been to there are snack bars or food choices outside of meal times. It had a touch of the "old folks home" about the inflexibility of food/drinks and/or choice of dining. It would have been nice to have another option for eating outside of the rigidity of the buffet morning, noon and night. By the way, the G&T is delicious, as was the cherry liqueur with either coke or sparkling wine. We all found the red wine at the table quite inoffensive (don't touch the white!).

The little bar over the road from the hotel makes a nice change for a few drinks or a snack (or to try the local Poncha - be careful though it's not for the faint hearted!).

This little hotel is really very nice but i'm afraid to say not my cup of tea at all. It is a SAGA hotel, and you can understand why. It's sleepy and routined and in the absolute middle of nowhere (those who mention the amenities at the local village are bigging it up somewhat - it's teeny tiny and has a cafe, post office, hardware shop and terrible little gifty type shop. Oh and a petrol station. Really - this isn't a must-see.)

All outside furniture at this hotel needs replacing. It's really not very good and makes the hotel feel shabby when you're enjoying the outside (when it's not raining or freezing!).

Other than the receptionists (good luck if you try them out) the rest of the staff were very nice and were really quite pleasant. If you don't see your rep (like us) then turn to Brian for help, the SAGA rep - he's awesome. x

Room Tip: Face the sea - it's stunning. No, you may not get the sun but it's not a sunny place.
