Lovely position with stunning view of bay. We were unlucky with the weather, going in March, but found the staff helpful and the food varied and enjoyable. Our stay, however, was thoroughly spoiled by the unruly behaviour of the numerous children from several nations but the worst offenders seemed to be Polish. For a four star hotel, the guests dressed inappropriately for dinner, wearing shorts, sandals and generally looking as though they had just come off the beach. Surely there should be a minimum dress code for a hotel of this purported level.
Yes, it was isolated but if you do your research you should be aware of this before booking. It is certainly not a place for children and maybe there are so many because it is an all-inclusive hotel and parents are looking for a cheap deal.

Room Tip: As far as can be ascertained, all rooms have a sea view, but some look out over the bay, which is st...

Had a week all inclusive at The Monte Mar Palace we went with Cosmos on the arrival at the airport we were handed welcome pack which included a programme of the walks that we're available but we were shocked to find that it would cost an extra 70 euros to pick up from the Monte Mar Palace. So we only walked around Ponte Delgada and took the courtesy bus to the nearest village. Very disappointed. The hotel certainly is in need of refurbishment staff very kind and helpful but not always about to man the bar during the day. Entertainment was mostly for the French not the English or other nationalities.
Room basic but comfortable bed linen very thin and in need of replacement but always plenty of hot water

This hotel is drab and dismal inside and outside unless you happen to be lucky and the sun shines. the beds are very hard and much of the crockery is chipped. The staff were not at al helpful, everything was done with an attitude.
The cliff top gardens would be lovely if the sun shone. I was there for a week in January and it was grey and very wet for six out of seven days. There was very little to do in the hotel unless you spend time in the spa or swimming pool. Evening entertainment is mainly in French.
The hotel is isolated, the village is up a very steep hill and the harbour is down a very steep hill.
The bus into Funchal at 0725 takes forever through the mountains so unless you hire a car travel is limited.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool.

The hotel is in a beautiful location with outstanding views situated on the headland at Ponta Delgada. On the bus route giving public transport links around the island. If you are not capable of walking up and down hills you will either need to use the bus or hire a car. If you just want to chill out there are ample facilities in the hotel.
We booked an AI package and car hire from the airport. In general the hot food was good and plenty of choice with a well prepared salad bar. Desserts fairly plain and the choice changed little throughout the stay. The wine served with meals was of reasonable quality as were the AI drinks.

The general decor was a little tired and needed update and repair in places. Our room on the ground floor needed a revisit by room service to get rid of the black mould growing around the bath. This was completed the following day with the silicone grout being replaced. There is a fridge in the room but when you take your key out of the lock which controls the electric the fridge is powered off. Not much good if you are looking forward to a cool drink when you return to the room. Just a pain to go back to the bar and find someone to serve you. The windy weather and high seas crashing on the rocks below resulted a poor sleep due to the noise.

In all, a good value for money package booked through Cosmos but let down by the decor and general condition.

Room Tip: We upgraded to a sea view, but in light of the noise from the sea would probably have benefited from...

We spent one week with All-inclusive in Monte Mar Palace, and the hotel is so kind that offer us a suite and a welcome champagne which is never expected! The room is large, clean and cosy, with one side view of ocean and the other side of montain.
The food is quite good, and diversified, almost everyday from lunch to diner, we could try different ones (meats, salades, dessert, soup, etc). Especially, in the day of St Valentine, the restaurant prepared the dinner with hearted and lovely decoration, very enjoyable. After meal, one can take the coffee, tea, and the bar offers many choices of spirits too. One more thing, the restaurant will prepare one a picnic package if you go out during the day.
For entertainment, many free facilaties: golf, dart, table-tennis, swimming pool, etc; at night, there is animation organized by the local group, the guys are very welcoming, friendly and motivated.
One thing to note that the location of the hotel is little bit far from Funchal, about 1hr-1.5hr by bus, which is not a lot during the day. However, one can still walk along the road from hotel and access to the montain way nearby.
At last, most importantly, the stuffs, from the receptionist, local guide, and personnel in resto are very nice and provide excellent service that we are impressed.
This is an amazing hotel and we would probably go back again.

Facilities of the hotel were up to 4 star standard, but where the hotel was lacking was in some of the detail. Some furnishings and decorations were a bit tired-looking, and staff were sometimes less than attentive - especially behind the bars.
The standard of food was always high, although the choice was occasionally limited, especially for vegetarians (pasta or salad) and some dishes were unusual for a buffet - for example, tripe!
The hotel is in an isolated position on the north coast, so inevitably the weather is unpredictable, but there is very little to do outside the hotel if you are not a keen walker.
"Entertainment" during our visit was provided by a French animacion team - they were dire.

My sister booked this week for us, she booked 2 single rooms, on arrival we were taken to our rooms which were both doubles, balcony looking out to the ocean, large bathroom with shower over bath, the rooms were cleaned each day,The food in reasturant was very good, had choice of either Fish, Meat or veggie option at each meal time with different veg and potatoes each time, there was duck ,steak, pork, rabbit, local fish was great, was there a week and did not have anything repeated. Waiters and staff at the hotel were very friendly and could not do enought for you. We went with Cosmos who didn't have a rep at the hotel, but there was a rep there from Saga Jake and what a lovely young lad he was, always seemed to be there when you needed him, was never to busy to help you !! sorted out our taxi for the trip into sao Vincent to the resturant.the hotel was up on the cliff over looking the ocean, and dispite ready some of the other reviews I found it very clean and tidy, sun beds around pool all new and chairs outside of bar area had all been replaced.there was a lovely little coffee shop( cafe') outside of hotel across the road where I had my espresso's every day, very cheap under a euro for a double, its A bit up and down hills, very quite and a lovely hotel and island. My sister Tina and I took a trip round the Island by a taxi, he took us to all of the main sites, left us to look around and then pick us up a bit further down the road (no Pressure ) Went on the cable car up the mountain in Funchal, takes around an hour in total if you get off at the top for a look around. worth a trip great views.Driver took us to glass platform look out point 1580 meters ubove sea level (scary ) and we went through the old town where the local artist had been allowed to paint doors and walls. we also went to the rock pool swimming pools.
