“Good family fun”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

We had an excellent holiday. 16 of us stayed for a week. The pool was fantastic one of the best I've seen. There was plenty to do round the pool during the day for both adults and kids. The location of the hotel was quiet and there wasn't a lot of english tourists.
The hotel was very clean and the staff were friendly. We were all inclusive so the bar staff did sometimes rush orders and/or get orders wrong. And there was one rude and unhelpful receptionist.
But overall I have no complaints about the holiday and I would definitely recommend the hotel.

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Malaga Playa, myself, husband, 17 month old and 5 year old. Honest review to follow, yes there are things that could be better....if any of them are things that would spoil your holiday then don't go.
FOOD
Everything we tried was excellent, well cooked and there was a large selection, especially at breakfast. The salads were always fresh and varied. There wasn't a huge choice for vegetarians (but I survived!) as although there was veg, potatoes there was rarely anything to go with this. However I made my own pasta creations using the roasted veg in the Italian corner and the pasta, cheese, sauces etc.

ENTERTAINMENT
This is really what made our holiday, the kids club. Mini club (Anna and Carmen) was amazing and our little one enjoyed meeting children from lots of different countries. Marta and Shellemy who do Maxi Club are also lovely and they would all speak to us and my children when they saw us around the hotel. The rest of the team are also amazing. They work incredibly long hours yet are always cheerful and polite. We didn't see much of the evening entertainment as our little one was usually asleep so we sat on the terrace instead so can't comment about that.

ROOMS
We had a standard double room and it was a tight squeeze but we were barely in the room so we managed fine. It was cleaned daily, new towels when we asked for them, sheets changed when we requested, no issues here.

RECEPTION
Check in was VERY slow but all staff are helpful and polite. They arranged a trip out for us and ordered taxis etc when we went into Nerja.

LOCATION
Lovely to be right on the beach. The promenade is perfect for walking sleepy babies up and down to get them to sleep! There are lots of restaurants and bars within a 5 minute walk if you fancy a change of scenery. We visited Nerja as we have stayed there a few times and love it, it was 12 Euros in a taxi and well worth a visit to wander around and lots of restaurants here too. We also visited Aqualand in Torremolinos on a trip from hotel. Ask at Reception for Petra and she will organise it, it was about a 50 minute coach ride and a good day out, very reasonable price too.

SUNBEDS
We didn't ever have an issue getting sunbeds. Even when we arrived at 1.15pm we got 2 together. Some days we only went down at 10am and still got some. They are quite strict and will remove towels. So they should! It was quite entertaining to watch people come back to find their things had been removed and other people on their beds.

WHAT COULD BE BETTER?
There is nothing that spoilt our holiday but as always there are a couple of things that could be improved. Some seating around the mini disco area would be great.....the wall with hedge in back for 45 minutes is a bit painful but it is lovely to have to disco outside rather than in. We are non smokers and there were ALOT of smokers (mainly European) who have no problem smoking in front of children. As there are lots of outdoor seating areas it would make sense to have one of these as a non smoking area. When removing sunbeds it should really be a job of someone in management as the poor lifeguard had several people complaining to him which meant he wasn't watching the pool. Maybe if management took towels to Reception rather than the lifeguard putting them on the hedge it would have more of an impact. Finally, why can't there be a designated family area in the restaurant? Some times we ended up sat next to couples who I'm sure would have been happier sat next to another couple. The dining room is plenty big enough to do this.

This is an excellent hotel, they will do all they can to make sure you have a wonderful holiday. There are a lot of children so if you are a couple and children annoy you I wouldn't go here. We got some 'looks' of older, European guests when our children dared to make a noise (!) and I suggest they visit adult only hotels in future and not one whose website clearly states perfect for families!
We also got a bottle of champagne in our room and treats for the children towards the end of our stay thanking us for choosing the hotel, a nice touch and much appreciated!

There was 21 of us that travelled to the Iberostar Malaga Playa. We were made welcome from the start. Usual set up with safe etc. TOWELS are available for a €10 deposit which is great as there is no need to take your own towles. They could be changed as often as required and they were a good quality towel. How do I put this? Whilst we were there we had no problems! Everything was fantastic. We were on the all inclusive package. Breakfast was very good, with all your normal meats, fruit, pancakes as well as fresh omelettes, bacon, sausage, eggs the list goes on! Lunch was also very good as well as the evening menu. The evening menu must be on a 2 week turnaround as we had different food every night. Don't get me wrong the main foods were there every night but there was also specials, every thing from a beef roast to sea salt encrusted sea bass, and very nice it was to. The evening meal was waiter served for your drinks, the larger was San Miguel(bottled) during the day it was draft. As for drinks, go for it, there was plenty of choice including cocktails. Juan and his fantastic bar team were always on hand to keep the drinks flowing. The evening entertainment was watchable, but so were the kids! Talking about kids, the entertainment team do a fantastic job keeping the hotel guests entertained. The kids mini club was ran by Marta, Carmen and Shelmy. They work tirelessly to keep the kids entertained, they have a Wednesday as a day off but the kids club is then ran by Ana. The pool is a great size, if you have young kids get a bed to the far left as you come down the main stairs as that's the shallow end. Nibbles during the day over a cheeky la bumba (chocolate and brandy) whilst playing cards goes down a treat. Now I know the weather will differ but we had sunshine from around 08:30 till well after 20:30. At other hotels I'm normally back in the room getting ready for the mini disco! Here it was harder as there was so much sunshine, not that I'm complaining! Mini disco starts at 20:30 and Starky normally turn up around 20:55, who is Starky I hear you ask, just wait, lol. This is from what I could see the only hotel in Costa Torrox, it's mainly a residential/let area. When we were there I would have a guess that the hotel was 70% German, 15% Spanish and the rest a mix, it's not a problem, just something I noticed. At the bottom of the complex is a gate that takes you onto the beach front. There is around 20/30 restaurant on the front. Book with confidence.

This hotel is amazing, all of us had a fantastic stay and would go back again. The hotel is in a very quiet place with bars and restaurants nearby, we only ate out a couple of times due to the food being of a high standard. The hotel is very clean and the staff are very friendly. Our friends had 2 young children with them who enjoyed the kids club. We went late september so at peak times it may become more busy.

Room Tip: lower floors were very quiet, didn't have much too look at but don't stay in room on holiday...

Stayed here all inclusive 19-26th July with 2 kids age 3 and 6. Nice hotel in a good location. Room was a bit dated but big enough, we had a 1 bed apartment with separate kitchen. Sofa was used as a bed for 2 kids. Not sure cleaners did much in room, just made the beds and changed the towels. Air con was good.

Restaurant is big, but you still get big queues waiting to get in at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food was ok; sometimes it was good.

Drinks are good – self-service for breakfast and lunch but not any other time. Not all guests are AI so you have to queue at the bar or ask waiter for a drink. Cocktails on AI are good and as many as you want.

Kid’s entertainment – mini disco at 8.30 pm most night – ok kids liked it. There is a hotel run mini club and maxi club. Maxi club seemed to do more activities than the mini club and also plenty of activities for the adults. Need more for the little ones; my son 6 didn’t go to mini club as he found it boring. There is a small climbing frame and swing and small kid’s pool. Some of the team could not speak good English; even I could not understand one member when she tried to explain to me that I need to fill in a form.

The main pool is big enough but watches out at the shallow end – this can get deep quite quick. Plenty of sunbeds but if you want to be near kids in the pool so you can keep an eye on them, then you need to be up by 8.30.

When you arrive at the hotel you can pay 10 euro deposit each for a towel and have it changed every day, we did, it saved us taking towels. The deposit is returned at the end of your stay but keep your receipt.

Mix of English, Spanish, French, German and Dutch guests. Be polite to everyone and they are polite to you.

Overall, nice hotel in a good location. Quiet residential area, out of the gates ate back of the hotel on your on the beach.

We stayed here during July 2014. The rooms were a good standard and beds were very comfortable. Breakfast (and all other foods) was a buffet and really well done always plenty of options to suit all. The indoor pool was great. I also used the Gym but only once as the equipment was in a poor state. This needs sorting as the rest of the hotel is good. Didn't think much to Torrox but nearby Nerja is nice only 10min in a taxi (or bus).

We will be back.

This is a great hotel for family. Staff were so friendly and good with kids. Pool got crowded but this is to be expected at peak season and the beach is not far away. Pictures are exactly as shown on the website. I would say that the reception staff were not so great or helpful which let the hotel down. If taking a taxi from the airport be prepared to pay a high price. 85€ for a 40 min trip! You have to pay for the use of the safe and internet connection is extremely poor. Not what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Supermarkets and bars are nearby but you will need a car if you want to explore any further. Double room is a decent size, however I paid for a family room for 3 and paid more than the double room even though it was the same size as the double room and it is advertised that kids go free of an age. Any music at the hotel stops at roughly 11.30pm which was good although I would recommend asking for a room on the top floor or close to it.
