Castaway provided just the vacation my wife and I wanted. The room is charming and the location, just steps from one of the most gorgeous beaches you can find, is tremendous.

The room has a very comfortable king-size bed, sizable sitting area, well-appointed kitchen, nice bath area (including a shower with hot water) and a large porch facing the water. The room was cleaned every day. The screen doors could be improved, as they are hard to operate. The room also provides comfortable beach chairs, large beach towels, beach sheets and a beach bag.

The stunningly beautiful beach stretches for over a mile, with no other hotels or houses on it except for the Castaway buildings. As a result, there are very few other people on the beach.

We rented a golf cart, which made getting around the island very easy. Bikes are available to rent also, but since there are only a few paved roads, with the other ones being a combination of dirt and rocks, it seemed like bikes could require considerable effort to get the same places we took the cart. Cars are not available to rent.

Since we visited in mid-February, which is whale season, we took a half-day whale-watching trip (with Crystal Sea Adventures…and saw many whales spouting, diving and breeching). We took a partial-day trip to Grand Turk, via the ferry. We also took a morning and used the golf cart to explore the island, visiting some of the beautiful natural areas away from the village. The balance of our six days on Salt Cay was spent on the beautiful beach. Diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing were also available, but we chose not to participate in these activities.

Haidee and Porter are terrific hosts. Our flight to Provo was delayed, which caused us to miss our connecting flight to Salt Cay. We informed Haidee of this, and while we were on our delayed flight to Provo, she arranged a hotel reservation in Provo for us for one night and made arrangements for us to catch another flight to Salt Cay the next day. Our luggage didn’t make the flight to Provo, so it didn’t arrive in Salt Cay until a day after we did. Since there are very limited options for purchasing clothes on Salt Cay, Haidee arranged for us to borrow some items from some of the locals who were “our size.” These things really helped save our vacation. We could not ask for better assistance.

Salt Cay is a remote island. As a result there are limited options for dining, groceries and shopping. It may not appeal to some travelers. It was just what we were looking for.

Thanks for the great review!

Salt Cay as you said, is not for everyone. We continuously face challenges that are encountered in remote destinations world wide. However for those wanting to get off the "grid" and enjoy the Caribbean of yesteryear with pristine white sand beaches Salt Cay is the place.

We also work with the top rated companies that provide activities for guests to Salt Cay....be it whale watching or other aqua adventures with Crystal Seas Adventures, clamming or conching with Ranfurly or fishing with Kevin or Lionel.

Our TEAM strives to be your 24/7 Concierge so you have a great Holiday@

We had a wonderful time. The accommodations were very comfortable and the beach front location was wonderful. It was very quiet and peaceful. We would highly recommend this as a wonderful island getaway.

We are glad you enjoyed the ultimate getaway!

Salt Cay and more specifically Castaway is the perfect place to recharge and refresh far from the problems of the world today. Castaway is located on a pristine white sand beach that stretches for miles and oftentimes the only foot prints you see will be your own.

The hosts of the Castaways, Porter & Haidee, were charming and welcoming. The cottage was as promised - isolated and private and right on a beautiful beach which most days we entirely to ourselves. The trade off for the privacy was a walk or short bike ride to the 'town' but it was well worth it to participate in the community activities and social gatherings at Island Thyme where locals and visitors alike treat you like old friends. The caretaker, Apol, was attentive to our needs and we were even provided a cell phone to use during our stay and when the need to use it arose everyone was responsive. If you want to get "away" but don't want the commercialized, resort atmosphere, you will enjoy Salt Cay. And Castaways delivered on all it promised.

Castaways and Salt Cay is for those who want to get off the "grid" and enjoy the Caribbean of yesteryear...a simpler time and place. Enjoy the natural beauty of the island and take time to breathe and recharge.

Thanks for the great review and we look forward to having you back on Salt Cay, and staying at Castaways in the near future.

I am writing this review in response to repeated requests from the owners of Castaway (3 emails + a verbal request) for a 5-star review.

It pains me to give a negative but honest review to two genuinely nice people. However, as a seasoned world traveler, this would be the most appropriate forum in which to advise other like-minded travelers against staying at Castaway.

Despite all of the charming and enchanting reviews, our experience here was at first lovely since the cottage itself is beautifully decorated and the proximity to North Beach was true to the representation in all the photos. However, the total cost per night seems vastly inflated in relation to what you are able to get elsewhere for the same price. The amenities are considerably lacking, especially the fact that our screen doors would not close, were ripped and allowed for tons of mosquitoes to enter the cottage. Please note there is no air conditioning in the cottage either and we were explicitly told to conserve water and use it sparingly. We were provided 2 small bottles of water per day - definitely not enough considering the 5 mile round trip daily bike rides needed to get to/from town.

Also note the nightly rate does NOT including any transportation to/from the cottage. Haidee and Porter charge an additional $100/day for a golf cart. Travelers, please bear in mind this cottage is quite remote, isolated, and away from the "downtown" drag and the marina. But for the frugal traveler, a bike rental would be the best option at $20/day (which in our opinion should have been complimentary considering the nightly rate).

We opted for the bike rentals and it became quite the struggle to have to bike 20 mins into town on a VERY rocky, unpaved, pot-holed road that stretched for at least 1.5 miles. So at night, the journey becomes quite treacherous as the roads are not lit and it is very isolated and desolate. Don't even get me started on the inevitability of getting a flat tire (which happened to us). To be fair, Haidee and Porter's property managers were fantastic. Apol came to our rescue and was very attentive.

Oh, and lest I forget, there was a blood stain on the bed sheets - from god knows what.

For the type of traveler (or honeymooner) that is attracted to this charming aesthetic with some extra dollars to spare, this would be the perfect place. It truly is a getaway and an escape, but at the end of our 2 night stay, our bill came up to $500/night. We would have preferred to stay elsewhere at the same rate.

The Turks & Caicos and especially the out islands are not inexpensive, everything is imported and goes through multiple "hands" before it arrives here.

It appears Salt Cay was not for you although you repeatedly said you "loved the accommodations" and the island when you were here. If you would have shared any of your "issues" to us while you were on island they would have been addressed, but you chose not to.

Our accommodations are priced in line with accommodations with similar amenities based on competitive rates of other properties in the Turks & Caicos. No other accommodation on Salt Cay is located on pristine North Beach and offers the amenities we do as well as direct beach access. However Salt Cay is not for the budget traveler due to the costs of doing business in a remote location.

All of your issues are highlighted in our FAQs on our web site as well as pricing. Perhaps you did not do your research prior to your visit.

We try to meet the needs of all of our guests and we are sorry we did not meet your expectations.

Castaway at Salt Cay is everything that I hoped for and more. The accommodations are very clean, simple and romantic. Sleep to the rhythm of the waves with the breeze of the winds and awake to the gorgeous, carribbean blue ocean and the best beach just a step away. It is a quiet and relaxing place to be and we truly felt at home. We loved the bike rides to dinner to watch the sunset, and whale watching with Crystal Seas Adventures. Porter and Haidee, the hosts are so engaging and warm that they made our stay feel as if we were visiting old friends. The staff, Lollie and Apol were wonderful taking care of us. Lollie with her amazing cooking at Porter's Island Thyme Restaurant and Apol who kept our room clean and kept us in gear with bikes and snorkeling equipment. My husband forget sun glasses for the trip and Apol took his sunglasses off his head and gave them to my husband to borrow for the week! The people of the island made us feel very welcomed and we enjoyed the kindness and warmth that they shared. It is part of what makes Salt Cay so beautiful and special. The morning we left a brief rain shower passed through and a huge rainbow appeared over Castaways. That about summed up the magic of this place for me. Thank you everyone on Salt Cay for sharing your treasures.

My wife and I stayed at Castaway for four nights over New Year's. The atmosphere is as good as it gets: if you’re looking for quiet, laid-back, do-nothing, forget-about-everything days on the beach, you can’t do better than this. Not in the Turks & Caicos Islands, and not anywhere else.

At Castaway, you get a panoramic view of the ocean, with Grand Turk Island and Cotton Cay on the horizon, from the porch of your cabana. We killed hours at a time just sitting on the porch, talking and taking in the view.

The North Shore beach is not ten yards from the porch -- and it’s one of the best beaches to be found anywhere. We never saw more than two other couples on the beach, and usually not even that. As often as not, even our own footsteps were washed away before we came back to an unspoiled beach.

As for the island in general, there are not more than 50 or 60 people on the island -- and 10 or 15 of those are visitors. There are three restaurants; the food is good (Porter’s Island Thyme is great), but the food is expensive. (This is inevitable -- the smaller the island, the more needs to be imported, and the harder it gets to do so.) Also, beer is very expensive throughout the Turks & Caicos, because of import duties -- give it up and drink wine and cocktails instead.

Finally, Porter and Heidi (who run Castaway as well as Porter’s Island Thyme, the restaurant), are wonderful. It’s like staying with the aunt and uncle you always wished you had. They are warm and welcoming -- by the end of the trip, we all hugged to say goodbye -- and they are full of wild stories, high spirits, and kind gestures. The staff (Lolly and Apol) are, likewise, endlessly helpful and friendly.

Tips:
You should probably rent a buggy or bicycles; the 1.5-mile walk to town doesn’t sound like a big deal, but after you do the round-trip twice a day for a couple days, it does get old. (We actually stopped taking the direct route, and went the longer way along the beach and over the bluffs a couple of times instead. The views are spectacular, but the path over the bluffs is probably a daytime-only route.)

Bring potent bug spray and some calamine lotion. The tradewinds keep the bugs from getting too bad, but they’re still there, and the mosquito nets over the beds are not particularly top-notch. If you’re the sort of person who tends to draw the bug bites (we are), you’ll draw them here (we did).

Bring an extra book. The snorkeling is worthwhile but not jaw-dropping; if you’re a diver, I’m told that’s good too -- but there’s not much else to do. You come to Salt Cay to relax; adventure sports and activities are on other islands.
