Simply put, if you want to connect to the people of Salt Cay and their history, which is so rich and alluring, then stay with Candy at Pirates Hideaway! She is friends not only with ex-pats but islanders, whose families, in most cases, have lived on the island since the days of slavery. Candy, who, in the past, worked as a journalist, is a treasure trove of information about Salt Cay. With the help of a video recorder, she has been helping residents to preserve their culture and heritage, and her work has resulted in an excellent documentary, which she will show you upon request.
Candy met us at the airport, gave us a brief tour of the island, pointing out the best snorkeling spots, and then showed us to our room, which was large, clean, comfortable, charming, and needless to say quiet (on an island of 61 people). It had a small, simple kitchen, hot-water shower, screened windows, and a ceiling fan. She was always there for us, asking if we needed anything, answering questions, making a call or two, and even sharing some home-baked bread.
At the end of our stay, she drove us to the airport and said “Ciao” not Goodbye because we all knew we would be seeing one another again! And we will!
