Had some friends over from the states and we selected this property to show off some fabulous NZ bush and beach. The rooms are obviously being upgraded which is a good thing as some parts a bit tired. The staff were very friendly and helpful but the entire experience with them made us feel that they were all on a training course. Good luck with that. The accommodation was reasonably priced the bar and food a bit on the expensive side considering the so so service . Would stay again.

My wife and I booked this resort for two special nights at the end of an extended New Zealand tour. When we arrived the pot holed road, the clapped out mini bus that took us to the unit, the mountain goat track up to the unit and building site all about us made us feel we had made a mistake. The unit smelt of new carpet and the plaster rubbish on and below the balcony showed it had just been refurbished. The view shown on the website was not available from this balcony we could only see the builders with their feet up having a cuppa on the balcony below. We then discovered there was no door on the toilet/ensuite, the toilet being open not only to the bedroom but anyone standing on a nearby balcony, no curtains either! We were not impressed and asked for a completed room, there were none. We were told by the Manager the doors had not arrived! We were only offered food or beverage vouchers, we were tempted to ask if they were big enough to cover the open toilet door but decided to walk out instead. The receptionist had sat us down and introduced us to the resort as if it was special, it is not, it is a load of old sheds in an ill managed bit of bush. A lot less pretention and a lot of work would be beneficial. We were amazed the Accor group would allow the resort to use the "Grand Mercure" brand.

My wife and I stayed at the Resort for 4 nights. Our tree top chalet was comfortable with some cooking facilities - although we never used them. The receptionists - Amba and Joselyn - were outstanding. They could not have been more helpful in booking trips for us and generally being helpful and informative. Wifi is very expensive and restrictive - NZD 6 for 30 minutes and NZD 11 for an hour but it only works in the hotel reception area. However, there are clearly problems in the kitchen. Dinner was awfully slow to be prepared on the one night we ate in the restaurant. It is a shame because the food was delicious. On our departure day when we needed a prompt breakfast the buffet - scheduled to open at 7 - wasn't ready until about 7:25.

The room was nice but access to rooms is difficult. Parking is a long way from rooms so it is quite an uphill hike to get back to your room. Definitely not a place for older or less mobile travellers. The Restaurant seemed a bit expensive and we didn't eat there. It was pretty empty whenever we walked past. Pauanui was a bit remote for us for an extended stay. There are a few restaurants and cafes in town but not always open and they close early. We booked a week which would be ok if you wanted to go to the beach every day, but for sightseeing in the area it meant travelling back and forth. Hotel Rooms were being refurbished while we were there so quality may be better in those rooms.

We stayed at Puka Park through the Accor Vacation Club, and it was our first experience using the AVC properties and system.
The hotel is secluded on the hillside just above the beach village of Pauanui on the East Coromandel Peninsula, and we visited just prior to the busy summer season. We booked a studio, which was roomy and were fortunate to have a newly refurbished room. I understand the bathrooms have been completely redone and ours was certainly very up to date with a deep free-standing bath, plus double-head shower and separate toilet (the shower and toilet were glassed off). My only observation is that a larger person might find the toilet cubicle a tight fit and the bath while wonderful for me was tricky for my husband to squeeze into with his broader shoulders.

The room was spacious, with high cathedral ceilings. We had a nice balcony and it was very private, with no-one overlooking us and views of the bush, lovely to wake up to.

Our studio was connected to an adjoining one-bedroom and for a week-long stay I think I may opt for this in future.

We ate in the restaurant twice in the evenings and once for breakfast, opting to have breakfast the rest of the week at the local cafes in order to take advantage of their free Wifi, as there is no Wifi at Puka Park and a charge for using the computers in the lobby. The food was lovely and the ambience is too.

There is a nice pool area and tennis court, with bikes available for guests for a fee.

The property is within a 10-15 minute stroll of the local beach, but you are walking uphill on the way home. We found it no problem to unload our luggage in front of the villa and park in the guest carpark, but some people who are not as fit might. The staff were very helpful though and if you have difficulty they can help you out with a golf cart.

Special note goes to Jocelyn on reception who was very welcoming and helpful, ensuring we had no trouble finding the property (we didn't).

For those booking through AVC, rooms are only serviced once a week and in future I would ask for a mid-week clean as well. We were provided with only 2 bath towels and on arrival 1/4 roll of toilet paper was in our bathroom, with 1 spare roll in the cupboard - not quite enough for 2 people for a week.

Overall, Puka Park was lovely and I'll happily return. It was a great base to explore the area and perfect for those wanting a quiet break.

Room Tip: I didn't see the rooms on the higher part of the resort, but if you don't want to walk too f...

Our chalet was set in the bush behind the main receiption area, which meant an up hill walk from any of the facilitys. However a ride in a golf cart back to our room was always on offer. Set away from any main roads ensured for Peace and quite through the night with only the birds and sunrise to wake us in the morning as there were no blinds on the ranch slider.

Lovely location in the Coromandel, freestanding units in the bush, lovely bar overlooking bush, very private and restful.

The service was good, the reception and restaurant are a little tired. They should replace the batteries in the remotes.
