Well worth a visit - surf beach one side, estuary the other, and a very interesting harbour. Lots of wild-life to view. We really enjoyed our brief visit.

Visiting family on Xmas Day in Whangamata was full of surprises. I hadnt visited the beach before and the walk there was a very enjoyable discovery. We took the track from the estuary to the white sandy ocean beach . In full bloom, agapathantha flowers spilled over the sand dunes to the beach making a stunning blue border. The beach wasnt crowded, and the gentle waves made it easy for families to enjoy. Getting to the township is an easy level walk if you decide to have a snack or coffee with many delightful cafes and restaurants. I look forward to returning for the annual Beach Hop in March.

Nice beach but no surf when we were there. Good place for families as gently sloping beach. Enjoyed seeing the younsters learning surfing at an evening surf club

Whangamata Beach is one of the best on the Corormandel Peninsula. It has great surfing, especially on the bar at the northern end. It provides great swimming in most conditions and is a great beach to walk along. At low tide, it is possible to wade out to Hauturu (Clark) Island. Rare dotterels breed at the southern end. It is a beach with something for everyone.
