After walked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, we drove to Turangi. As we always preferred the smaller hostels, we sticked with Riverstone, and it proved to be a good decision.

This is a small hostel with 30 beds or less total. We booked a double room which was quite a luxury one: it was bright, very spacious with a huge and comfortable bed, electric blankets, etc. The kitchen was the best I have met while in New Zealand, with tons of pens, plates, dishes. We were quite amazed with inner and outer lounge areas!

The shared bathroom was spotless with endless how water. Off-street parking is available. The wifi is just $5 / day and the supermarket is just 2 minutes of driving away.

The guy at reception was friendly and helpful, however he seemed he had smoked too much sometimes. :)

It was the perfect place to rest after the Crossing. The relaxing atmosphere was priceless!

Some hostels are just made to make the most money in no time. Some others are here to welcome travelers from everywhere, and make they enjoy their stay.
This one is far from these usual examples : everything is made to make you feel good, from the great outdoor place (this hammock !) to the very clean and huge kitchen place, and this works pretty well.
The staff is super-friendly, and in no time, if you want it, you're just part of it.
The services are huge, from simple information to Tongariro alpine crossing booking, and every question about the region has its answer.
TV, (almost) free WiFi (5$ for all the stay, can be refunded), BBQ, clean bathroom...
If you want a nice stay in a peaceful place to take your breath from a long walk, or a long road trip, then this place is the best.

We really enjoyed our stay in Turangi. The people who worked there are very friendly and helpfull.
The Tangoriro crossing was really awesome! They have electric blankets, very nice, after a cold day walking. The hostel (kitchen, bathrooms and rooms) were very clean.

I can't even remember how I stumbled upon this spot while booking my trip but I'm glad I did. It's by far the nicest hostel I've stayed in so far in New Zealand and perhaps one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in anywhere. If you're into "boutique" hostels that avoid the ratty, partying backpacker stereotype but are still social and inviting, this is the spot for you in Tongariro.

The owner, who happened to be spending a night at the hostel while I was there, has clearly made the place a passion project since opening it a few years back. The place can feel a little too fastidious at times (my only complaint), but if that's a trade-off for such a well laid out and upkept place, then I'll take it. The current managers, Sabrina and Jan, are super helpful, laid back, and wonderful hosts.

Prices are very reasonable, especially with BBH. Turangi is a very pleasant, chilled out town. The nearby New World is super convenient. Don't miss the Grand Central Fry! Cheap, awesome fish and chips and burgers, including a surprisingly great veggie burger. Though if you cook (which I don't), Riverstone has a wonderful kitchen.
