“Peaceful, great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2012

This house is certainly beautiful and well appointed. It's location, adjacent to the walking track along the Tongariro river is handy for walks and still close to town. The breakfasts are probably the best we've encountered in New Zealand and we've had a few good ones. The rooms are spotlessly clean the guest lounge is very comfortable and attractive. The hosts, Ken and Margaret, were very helpful with local information and warmly welcoming. They made it very easy for us on the evening we chose to eat our own food quietly in the dining room instead of going out but when we did eat out they had advice about local restaurants.

Room Tip: I think the downstairs rooms are spacious and comfortable. Unfortunately the upstairs room is rather...

Previous reviews said how great this place was... ...and they were right! Wonderful house, sumptuous food, and most excellent hosts. Thanks to Kenneth and Margaret for a lovely stay.

One of the highlights of our visit was the fishing lesson Margaret arranged. Nearby walking paths provide plenty to do without having to drive anywhere. Proximity to town allows you to walk to nearby restaurants.

If it's offered, accept the opportunity for dinner at the lodge; you won't be disappointed.

We'll be back.

This was an unplanned but totally delightful stop on our holiday. There are many special features - the superbly comfortable bed, the scrumptious breakfast, kind and generous hosts and beautiful setting. Margaret gave great recommendations for dinner, Lakeland House, and lunch heading south, Sugar Plum Cafe. Ika Lodge is a real treat and we'd love to return. Thank you Margaret and Kenneth!

Had a lovely stay at the Ika Lodge! Despite the fact that our planned Tongariro crossing was cancelled due to weather, we had a great time in the area. Margaret and Ken are extremely hospitable and went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. They arranged a white water rafting trip for us that was great. And the breakfasts - amazing! Best breakfast I've ever had, and I'm not a breakfast person. Fantastic egg dishes (smoked salmon scramble, smoked trout cake, yum!) and homemade muffins, jams, etc that were out of this world! My advice would be to go light on dinner the night before breakfast at the Ika. That way, you have room to thoroughly enjoy the breakfast :) Our room was very well appointed and clean. Not to mention that the decanter of port was a nice little touch. Would recommend to anyone staying in the area, had a really great experience!

Afraid we try to influence the weather on the mountains but sometimes with little effect, so glad you enjoyed the white water rafting on the mighty Tongariro and we could send you on your way after a wholesome breakfast

We stayed in Ika Lodge recently and found it a lovely place set in a beautiful neighbourhood in Turangi. Kenneth and Margaret give this lodge that Kiwi stamp of warmth and hospitality and they were helpful from booking and throughout our stay. We were given good advice on restaurants, driving times and some thoughts about attractions in the area that we were interested in seeing.

We booked in advance as they only have a few rooms. We stayed in the garden suite (NZ$165 per night) which was an attractive room with more than enough space (including a sitting area as you enter and where the port waits to be consumed!) and a nice en suite bathroom. We loved the window seat and its views to the charming garden they had just outside. Very good bed and soft pillows, although the blankets were rather heavy for our liking. For our late autumn visit, we had difficulty finding a suitable temperature in the evening as the room got a bit cold (the heater was small for room size) and it was too hot under the covers with the electric mattress. There was coffee and tea making facility (w/cookies) in the room although only tea was replenished after our first day, a bit disappointing as we are big coffee drinkers. Also, we were given a house key but no key to our bedroom, and there was no safe in which to store our valuables. However, the house was usually locked so it wasn't such a big deal, though this might not be comfortable for some visitors.

Ika Lodge has a small living room area good for lounging. There is a small fireplace which didn’t give much heat but it lent a very nice atmosphere and we like to hear fire crackling! The outdoor seating and garden are equally pleasant and bristled with flowers. It would have been nice to just enjoy a drink here if we had more downtime. Not sure if wifi was available or not at this lodge as it was not offered.

Breakfast was the real star of our stay at Ika Lodge; Ken and Margaret indulged us with two lovely morning meals of fresh fruit (and it was fun trying NZ varieties of fruits), grains and cereals, yoghurt, home-made jams and a variety of cooked breakfast options. Food was beautifully presented - always photogenic! - hearty and tasty. Fresh juices, tea and coffee (w/ plunger) accompanied the meal. This was hands down – a very good breakfast and the most impressive one had during this trip.

Overall, we had a nice stay at Ika Lodge. We felt this was a decidedly Kiwi B&B with a charming room and facilities, wonderful breakfast and the genuine hospitality of the owners. It is a little pricey but still makes a very good option for visitors wanting to stay in Turangi.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ika Lodge in April. It was very well situated for walking the Tongariro Crossing (a 25 minute drive to the end of the track & shuttle buses to the start). We loved the breakfast - such attention to detail and great quality food; also the grapes and home baking in the room was most welcome. Everything was superb and made for a very relaxing stay - thank you.

We had 2 nights at Ika Lodge for our trek to Tongariro Crossing. Such a pity it wasn't longer to make full use of the lodge during Autunm and the beautiful surrounds in Turangi. Margaret made us feel so welcomed and rose at the crack of dawn to cook us breakfast. Sure felt like a home away from home! You will not be disappointed!
