Owner description: Tongariro River Rafting is the most experienced outdoor adventure company on the Tongariro River. We create journeys, share stories and bring people closer to nature through biking, fishing and rafting. We celebrate 25 years as a family owned and operated business in 2015. We're passionate about showing off our amazing region to visitors and are dedicated to preserving the natural environment of the Tongariro River for future generations – so much so, we founded the Blue Duck Project – with the goal of returning the rare native Blue Duck to its traditional habitat along the Tongariro River. Our adventures include Grade 3 white water rafting trips, family floats for the younger rafters or first timers, mountain biking and fishing. On your Grade 3 white water rafting trip, you will have an unforgettable 2.5 hours navigating over 60 heart-pounding rapids with an expert guide at the helm. All of our guides are highly trained professionals and our equipment is top quality. You'll even enjoy a deli style lunch after your trip (hot soup in winter). Prepare yourself for one of the most stunning white water rafting adventures in New Zealand – we know this river like the back of our paddle! “Oar-some!!”

Did this trip with some friends, from the moment we arrived we felt welcome. All of the staff were very organised and put effort into making our trip most enjoyable.
We had 2 guides, Jen & Ryan - they were such a good time and so informative. We learnt a lot going down the rapids about nature and it's surroundings as well having many laughs. We even got to see the rare blue duck, on multiple occasions, that was so special.
We would definitely recommend this to everyone! Great thrills, great time and great company!!

Wow, it sounds like you had a really special trip and were particularly lucky to see Whio on more than one occasion. This really goes to show that all of the effort put in to protecting the Blue Duck on our river is working and it is fantastic that we are able to share that with our guests.
I will be sure to pass on to both Ryan and Jen what a great time you had with them.

Kind Regards,

Garth

All the reviews I have read for these people were excellent. Mine is no exception. It was well organised, fun and they worked very hard to ensure you got value for your money. Nothing more I can say that will add to that.

Early on a frosty winters morning myself and 2 friends were heading out on Rafting adventure down the Tongariro river. Mad I know! but I was surprised how quickly I forgot about the cold and had such a great time! When we arrived James (Guide) and Garth (Owner) were there to great us along with 4 other keen rafters, after a chat with everyone they then get us all geared up with a wetsuit, water boots, helmet and as it was winter we got a few extra fleece layers to wear under the wetsuit to keep us nice and warm. Once the van was loaded up its off to the river. The rapids on this trip are grade 3 so a nice middle ground for first timers! There are a couple easy rapids to get the hang of your paddles etc then a few good ones where you need to hold on tight. The scenery is just beautiful along the way. if it had been warmer I would have loved to go for a swim! Our guide James was very confident in his role which made us all relax and go for it! To Top the trip off after being out on the water you get a nice dip in the hot pools to warm up and we even got a hot cup of soup for lunch! I cant recommend this activity enough. I will be back again one day!

Huge thanks to Garth and his team! You really went above and beyond for us!

Thank Claire W

It's great to have locals on the river with us and thank you for taking the time to make such a great review. We can't wait to see you out here again, this time maybe in the summer so that you can do our rock-jump and go for a swim in the crystal clear water.

Rafting was always on our bucket list & we finally had the opportunity when we visited Taupo couple years ago. We got picked up & dropped off from our hotel. It was a long day but what fun it was. All the staff were so friendly & encouraging. Weather was cool & raining but we didn't mind, we got wet anyway. Stopping at the waterfall was the highlight & my husband jumped twice he loved it so much. I just had fun watching all the brave ones. We are planning to visit South Island in April 2014 & will be looking forward to another Rafting experience. I was scared stiff the 1st time but now I know what to expect, I think we can try a more challenging river.

Thank you so much for your review and we are so glad to have been a part of your first White Water Rafting experience here on the Tongariro. You must be looking forward to your pending trip to the South Island, there are definitely some exciting adventures to be had down there. I'm sure your next rafting experience will be just as great as the one you had with us, a few less nerves leaves a lot more room for excitement!!
