Unfortunately the *booking system* here on Tripadvisor was extremely scant on describing this lodge. (As a business owner myself, I would be looking into this, as we had no idea that all their units [except the Cottage] were cabins (NON self-contained units). There is a communal kitchen [spotless!], and a communal TV lounge [cosy]. We had one night in a cabin, and as we were going to be staying 3 nights; definitely wanted to move! There is only one self-contained unit; the "Cottage", and we were then very lucky to secure it. Betty was an excellent host and very helpful. The cottage was lovely, spacious and clean.

Now to my grrr...There are 2 keys on the room keychains, [remember we stayed at 2 different units so I had experience of each]. Both these keys are almost identical (see picture).
I was having great difficulty figuring out which key was for the unit (the other key was for the communal areas). On the first night at dinner in the guest kitchen, my husband had a nose-bleed and I had to race back to the cabin to get tissues etc. The keys. Which one?? Try first key up, then down, then next key up, then down. In the dark (it's not well lit) this was a frustrating procedure especially under such circumstances.
Could the owners invest in some of those little coloured plastic slip-on key "indicators". You would only need ONE per set of keys, and from memory these are only a few cents from the Mr Mint kiosks. (...I would even post you some if you would like ;) as I feel this would greatly enhance the stay.
The cabins would be ideal for a backpacker, trout-fisherman or one-night stay where amenities are not required. The cottage is ideal for couples who want privacy and self-catering, but book this EARLY.

Room Tip: There is only ONE self-contained cottage, all the other rooms are small with only toilet, mini wash...

It was a shame we only had one night here as the cottage, the location and things to do and see nearby were really spot on. The cottage is large, well provisioned and well back from the road behind a lovely garden, so your stay is very peaceful. The shower room looked recently refitted. We were able to walk to the nearby supermarket and stroll along the river which is behind the motel. Turangi in my view is an ideal base to stop, near the Tongariro crossing and Lake Taupo, and near enough Taupo itself. Compared to some other placed we stayed I felt it was great value for money.

Room Tip: We thought the cottage was lovely and worth the extra.

Can't rate as excellent when our time there was very short. Showed up late, left early. But, the owner was very helpful showing us around. The room was very clean and comfortable beds! Bathroom clean, soap and towels and washcloth provided. Shower pressure was great and my morning shower had hot water even though my husbands evening shower didn't. We didn't use the kitchen, but it was nice and big and I liked that each room number had their own cabinet to store their stuff in if they choose to do so. The walls were a bit thin in terms do noise and hearing others, but not that bad. Enjoyed it!

take care of you as if they were your mom and dad. Great people and great value for your dollar. Enjoyed the communal kitchen and meeting the other guests. Meeting others helped us arrange our transportation for the Tongariro Crossing (although there is pick up right at the Lodge with local transport) the next day. The Lodge has a games and relaxation lounge, outdoor tables and borders a river that has a hiking path right alongside it. Walking to the grocery store and town centre is not that far and easily driven to, if preferred. It was refreshing to make a reservation with Betty and not have to leave a credit card number, not even when checking in. Like old times!! I would recommend the Sportman's Lodge to anyone travelling to Turangi.

Stayed here for two nights so we could do the Tongariro crossing. It was the perfect location for the walk. The lodge is located right in the middle of Turangi, and Doug was extremely helpful. He was knowledgeable on the area and was very accommodating, helping us book the shuttle bus for our hike.
The rooms are small and fairly noisy, but for the price we paid it was great value for money. Would definitely recommend this place!
