Motuoapa Lodge Motel
Ranked #7 of 9 Turangi B&B and Inns
Reviewed 3 January 2014

The cleanliness of our room was poor, a filthy rag left in the sink, no toilet paper...squashed mozzies on the walls spiderwebs and dust...we had other friends staying in another room and they too said their room was not pleasant, finding the
fridge had leaked water onto the floor,"they" were handed a mop and bucket to clean it up. Seriously tired decor, and no one minds that as long as the rooms are "CLEAN".., my advise keep driving or sleep in your car.

Firstly I should note that the Motuoapa Lodge Motel is also often referred to as Motuoapa Retreat Motel and the Motuoapa Lake Resort, which can be confusing as they often appear under different names in the same booking sites but with different pricing. They are however one and the same.

The motel itself is set on highway 1 and is clearly visible as you drive by. It's the only motel in town and it's slightly higher elevation and scenic backdrop make it quite appealing.

We visited over school holidays in July and found all hotels and motels in the surrounding area fully booked. After trying Taupo we headed to Turangi with no luck. This motel however was almost empty. Perhaps this should have been a warning.

The motel consists of several joined wooden self contained cabins with a grass area in front between them and the main road, and a gravel driveway behind. All in all the setting is quite nice and the motel looks quite inviting. I felt the price ($140) was expensive (2 adults + 3 children) but with no other options we said ok. Unfortunately they were unable to accept card payment despite advertising as such therefore we had to drive into Turangi several KM away to withdraw cash to pay.

The cabin itself consisted of a master bedroom with wardrobe, living area with 2 single beds, sofa bed, table, chairs, a kitchen area with fridge, oven/hob and microwave, and a bathroom / toilet.

Facilities were basic and functional and not as clean as we would have liked. We had to clean the bath with boiling water before we could use it as it was so grimy. The cabin itself had a constant musty smell and felt damp throughout. The single beds were wobbly and the sofa bed was quite uninviting with a stained mattress covered in crumbs and God knows what else.

We also found that the wifi advertised was not available, with no explanation given.

For the very short time that we were there (less than 12 hours) we were 'ok' and slept reasonably well - if a little cold - and left feeling that we had not got great value for money. Upon checking when we returned hope we found that we had actually been charged around 25% more than their maximum advertised prices: I imagine we were taken full advantage of as everywhere else was booked. All in all not a very good experience and not somewhere I would recommend.
