“Perfect base for Tongariro Crossing”
Reviewed 5 March 2014

We chose the TRM because it looked like a good location to base ourselves near the Tongariro National Park. Ross and Pip were great hosts, full of local information, loaned us some nice books on local hikes, and a walking stick! The main focus at TRM is fishing, but they are also quite knowledgeable about hiking in the area. The rooms we had were comfortable, a bit worn, but very clean and serviceable, we felt right at home. TV and wireless worked great, and we had everything we needed for self catering. Hot showers were a big plus after hiking the Tongariro Crossing, and they had a guest laundry. We were very glad to spend 3 nights there! Resident greeters Boof and Pumpkin (the dogs) made us feel like part of the family.

Comfortable beds, good shower, everything we needed. It's not new, but it is very friendly and easy. Love the free Wi-Fi "use, please don't abuse". Our daughter enjoyed the choice of DVD's at reception. We will be back when next this way.

Really appreciated how easy it was to stay at this motel as we were arriving late, when I phoned to book they had no issues with it and left the light on in our room and the key out for us. Stress-free! The room was nice and clean, the studio had a full kitchen including oven, big TV with loads of Sky channels. There is some road noise but not enough to keep us awake.

Always a lovely realxing time at this motel. Ross & Pip are more than welcoming, ready with fishing gossip/news/tricks and news of the town and district.
The motel complex is located perfectly for the mighty Tongaririo River. Rods and waders are ready for use, and the bikes make getting around the river healthy and fun!. Bike the Tongaririo River Trail - safe from cars, and quite a work out!
The motel rooms are roomy and well equipped. Posh is not the word to describe TRM, but comfortable, warm, self-contained with free wi-fi and sky make is almost perfect.

Ross and Pip went out of their way to provide a relaxing stay and often seemed to lend us stuff from their house. Because we stayed for three days, Ross was happy to lend us some fishing gear which while we didn't catch anything was a great half day exploring the river.
The units are tidy and spacious with lots of wood which I liked:) Had ovens so could cook own food which newer places don't seem to have.
Really enjoyed stay - close to river and not far to the bakery:)
Will be returning soon!

Stayed here during winter and found it to be a tidy and quiet motel. It’s a stunning drive into National Park from here so was a good base for skiing in winter. Also, with it being just a shortish drive to Taupo it was ideal when the mountain was closed! I imagine it would be an equally good place to stay in summer for walks in the area and activities around the river and lake. Our unit had everything we needed and plenty of space. Really enjoyed chatting to motel owners Pip and Ross who pointed us in the direction of a good walk along the river and happily shared fishing tips. Pip keeps beautiful gardens around the units. Highly recommend for location and value for money.

When you want to get away from the hustle & bustle, even if you're not a avid fisher-person or snow-bunny, try this place. It is a stones throw from the magnificent Tongariro River and an absolutely beautiful walkway along the banks of the river. I was lucky enough to be able to take my 4-legged friend with me and it is absolutely doggy heaven on earth being able to walk along that walkway every day - of course "Boof" (the gorgeous motel dog) had to come too, no show without Punch. There are also numerous other areas along the river banks for exercising dogs (and humans), a fantastic playground to explore on foot. The river is therapy for the soul, but a lot cheaper. Ross & Pip are just amazing, so helpful and friendly - you could not ask for better hosts. The motel rooms are not extravagent, they are basic but are very clean and have everything you need to be very comfortable. A very calming and relaxing place to be, my family have been going there for 30+ years (4 generations now) and will continue to do so for many yet I suspect.
