“A really pleasant experience”
Reviewed 2 October 2010

We stayed at the Lodge last night. Being only a couple of minutes from Gulf Harbour Country Club, where we had booked a round of golf and literally 20 metres from the very good Carpe Diem restaurant, where we had also booked, the location was perfect.

We were greeted by a friendly Manager / Receptionist and check in was pretty standard. We paid for the room up front, although I don't know whether this was mandatory or not.

The first room we checked into had a large puddle on the balcony (obviously the drain was temporarily blocked) so we asked if we could change rooms and the manager immediately came up with a key to another room and took us there. A delightful room in fact, with two balconies overlooking the square and the canal. A really lovely setting.

Everything worked, although I didn't check out whether Sky was installed - I had far more interesting things to do than watch sport or old movies on TV. The room was very clean, bright, with pleasant, neutral decor and tasteful, framed prints. The bathroom was well stocked with ample towels, soap, shampoo, make up remover, tissues etc and the kitchen had a nice choice of premium Dilmah teas, coffee and drinking chocolate plus a small pack of biscuits. The over bath shower had terrific pressure although the hot/cold adjuster was a bit stiff.

A very good king size bed and duvet assured a good night's sleep but, if I could make one suggestion, it would be that the owners consider putting in an electric blanket which seems to be pretty much standard in most hotels / motels. In spite of it being October, it was still a cold night although the room itself was warm and we didn't need to use the panel heater.

I have paid $150 for a motel room in Palmerston North overlooking nothing except other motels, so to be able to stay in such a well furbished room in an outstanding location with a great outlook like the Gulf Harbour Lodge for $180, I consider to be outstanding value. I would definitely recommend the lodge and hope I get the opportunity to revisit it.

We checked in then were told to pay upfront. After she put the transaction through, told us there was an issue with the water pressure and to turn off the shower for a few minutes and try again. Had a wedding in the afternoon and when I went to have a shower there was no pressure at all. The shower wouldn't even stay on due to lack of water pressure. I eneded up going to the in-laws room for a shower and they had great pressure. We made a complaint at the same time as another guest, and nothing happened.
Next morning used the toilet and when I had to flush, there was no water in the cistern. I tried for the next 15mins and still coulnd't flush. Ended up going to a cafe for breakfast and 1 hour later went back to the room and was finally able to flush.
During check out we complained and asked what sort of compensation we'd receive as we paid full price $200.00 for the night. THe manager was completly unhelpfull and wouldn't do anything. She apparently needed to talk to the 36 owners! Complete BS. We are going to be disputing the charge now and will be winning. When we left, not in very happy moods mind you, she had the cheek to say "smile it's a lovely day". I almost went in and smacked her round the head.
DO NOT STAY HERE. We weren't the only ones to have problems and have the manager do nothing.

We were in the area and wanted to stay in a hotel with Sky(satallite) tv so we could watch a live rugby game that night.. Their website stated they had Sky tv so we booked in. It turned out they had just had their Sky uninstalled "due to the recession".
When we raised the issue, the duty manager was understanding and as we'd only checked in moments earlier, she informed us there would be no charge.
The following day we were informed by the website(needitnow.com) that Gulf Harbour Lodge had seen fit to charge us as "some of the other rooms in the building have sky and that I should have asked to look at those rooms before leaving"

I rang to ask about her reasoning or keeping our money and she stated she would "look into it in a few days" and she then hung up on me. Almost a week later and no word.

It was quite a good result though as we ended up staying at the Naultilus Hotel just up the road which was much nicer, had a great view, pool, spa and gym. The rooms were modern and clean and the staff were professional and friendly - All things that were absent at Gulf Harbour Lodge.

What a wonderful find Gulf Harbour Lodge was.. The Manager and her husband were charming. The lodge it's self was elegant, quiet, comfortable and just a bit off the beaten path, which we loved! We very much enjoyed our stay and will keep it mind for our next visit to the beautiful country of New Zealand..

This hotel on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula some way north of Auckland makes an excellent overnight stop. Clean modern spacious rooms, helpful staff. No meals provided but there are two excellent cafe/restaurants in the complex which can provide breakfast through to dinner.

My sister-in-law and brother-in-law had stayed at Gulf Harbour Lodge in the past and we had visited them there while they were staying.

Another sister-in-law and brother-in-law live just up the road and were having a house warming party so I decided to pack the kids off to their Aunty's and have a night away (also it would have been an hour's drive home from the party late at night so that was another factor).

We booked their Celebration Package which was NZD245 for the night which was in a King room and included a bottle of bubbly, chocolates, a cooked breakfast for two in the cafe downstairs and a late check-out of 1pm.

The room was lovely, nicely decorated, huge bed and the bubbly was in an ice bucket in the fridge ready to be opened. The reception staff were friendly and helpful.

It was really nice having the late check-out as it meant we could sleep in then go and have brunch and then return to the room for a nap or to organise ourselves.

The room looked out over the end of the canal.

All in all it was a lovely treat and well worth the money.

  • Liked — Right in Gulf Habour, a few restaurants, marina etc to walk around.
