Hotel Planibel - TH Resorts
Ranked #9 of 10 Hotels in La Thuile
Reviewed 8 March 2012

The best thing about the hotel is its location - it is right next to the ski lift and ski hire, shops and restaurants. It is a huge complex, including catered and self-catering apartments, with all the pros and cons associated. I was there for a conference in January and the weather was good, so I was fortunate - I also got in some nice skiing (although not a great resort for a timid intermediate skier). Even though it was cold outside, the rooms were warm - a big plus! However, the room was quite small, though adequate. It had a little balcony with view across the valley. The dining room was large, quite noisy and self-service - very Italian, with lots of courses. For free wifi you had to sit in the dark reception area and there were just 2 3-seat settees for all of us conferences delegates - which meant cosy evenings getting to know fellow delegates! However, a large hotel catering for conferences should offer better wifi facilities - free of charge! The room for the meetings, on the top floor, had a nice view but was cold, so after a couple of hours, it was miserable sitting there. The welcome, when I arrived by car with lots of ski stuff and conference stuff, was highly organised - ski stuff taken to ski room, the rest to my bedroom. One day I went to the thermal pool in the next village, and there was a free shuttle service - but the entry price was very expensive. The hotel seems to cater for big groups of package ski holidaymakers. Personally, I think it was overpriced and would be better classified as a 3-star hotel.

This hotel is just opposite the gondola on a perfect location. La Thuile skiing area is very nice.
However, it is a bit tired and would benefit from some refurbishment... specially the swimming pool and sauna areas...and bathrooms.
The rooms are large and very comfortable, but the bathrooms have a constant sewage smell...
The food is very good and varied.
Staff is friendly, but do not understand or speak English and communication can be problem specially at the restaurant.
We did not use the children/entertainment offered, but it seemed to be mostly in Italian.

Room Tip: Family rooms are actually two connecting rooms with two bath/shower rooms.

The hotel if clean and tidy, the lifts a little temperamental when busy, food at tea and breakfast was plentiful and tasty. If you plan to use the pool remember your swimming caps and towels and note it is quite cool definitely not a pool for relaxing in after a hard days skiing or I suppose walking. The gents changing is upstairs away from the pool so remember your flip flops as well!

For skiers access to the ski lifts is good but the boot room is a little lacking in benches to sit on to put on your boots. Remember the boot room is in the basement so it is a walk up two flights of stairs or a wait for the lift to get up to ground level.

Well, this rating could well have been 4 or 5 out of 5 but for some bad experiences.
We booked with Crystal for 1 week HB. An early morning start and we arrived about 1:00pm local time. As others have pointed out before there was a hold up when registering, but we were chilled out and not too bothered about the wait and it all went well. Room was quite spacious, clean, tidy and warm. Not too many drawers though, but we managed OK. My wife and I both found the bed quite hard and talking to others they made the same comments. Mattress toppers would be good. TV showed only BBC news in English, but if you understand Italian there were plenty of films to watch.
Food was buffet style and we found it to be quite plentiful, wide choice of starters, 3 or 4 spaghetti dishes to choose from and a meat course to follow. Plenty of veg, salads, and bread available. Puddings and tarts were scrummy and often with chocolate AND you could mix and match or eat as much as you wanted.
Breakfast was especially good as there was a wide range of cereals, bread, croissants, toast eggs, "sort of bacon" but tasty, sausages, jams, honey etc.
Of particular note was the "Wellness table" with choices for people with gluten and or lactose intolerance.
The food at the beginning of the week was not particularly hot but it got better at the end of the week.
The staff were attentive and smart and more often than not, efficient.
A bottle of wine would cost 15-22 Euro, which was a bit on the dear side but, hey-ho it is a 4* hotel.
Now for the bad bits. NOISE, lots of it. The walls were paper thin and when the new arrivals during the week came back from the pub at 2:00am they continued to talk and kept us awake.
Many others we talked to had similar problems with their neighbours.
The room overlook the plaza and we were opposite the Kings Bar Pub and near to the Bowling Alley. Every night there were people shouting etc. and even though it went quieter after 12:00pm there were still some very noisy people about. Out of the 7 nights we only managed a good night's sleep on one of them.
Our last night was the final straw, when several Italian youths chanted and shouted for 2-3 hours from 11:00pm onwards. A simple visit by the local police would have nipped it in the bud, but it did not happen.
Very close to the ski lifts, gondola, and 2 x 4-man chair lifts.
Ski locker was warm so no trouble with your boots not drying out. Lift from the ski locker room was particularly useful.
Would we go back to the Planibel Hotel? - No
Would we go back to La Thuile? - Yes, the skiing is great, Blue 15 was really good to start on and intermediates would find the red runs fun. For the advance skier there were 2 runs, one at 70% and the other at 73%.
Would we use Crystal again? - Probably, the organisation was good and reps were helpful.

Way much too expensive for what you get. The location is good, but the hotel and all the facilities are very old. It seems that nothing has been renovated since it has been built, it is very confused. Staff is very rude and not helpful at all. All the facilities (old) are charged separately and you never know how much is it. When you book a 4 stars hotel you expect something really different, I am very disappointed.

Just returned from a 7 stay at the Planibel. After a trek up the front ramp with our bags check in was extremely efficient, very friendly staff, and our room was ready for us to drop our bags off at 11:45 - very unusual from our experience of early arrivals and allowed us to relax immediately. Our room was on the 5th floor (519 - with balcony) overlooking the central complex pedestrian area and towards the Bosco Express and Maison Blanche chair lifts - with a great view of the steep black run. The room was clean and comfortable and a decent size with plenty of storage space and a fridge. As a previous reviewer highlights - the shower is ok but lacks power. We also noticed the noise in the pedestrian area in the evening through until around 10:00 pm and then with 'stragglers' through until the early hours. The hotel's location is great - with only a 2 - 3 minute walk to the lifts (including the Les Suches gondola) and ski back via the Red 6 or Red 7 runs. It was great to have access to a ski locker, with a fully refundable deposit, but could be a little tedious having to endure the queues for the lift to/from the ski room at the start/end of the day. Timing was everything. My wife also loved the fact that the hotel had a 25m swimming pool. We were lucky to have 6 sunny days, with one partially cloudy and, on most of the days, the slopes appeared to be relatively quiet apart from our last day (Saturday). However, with no snow during the week and temperatures climbing to +12 deg C yesterday some of the slopes (eg Red 30) were getting a little bare and others heading down to Les Suches were starting to border on slushy. We found the mountain huts a little disappointing for choice but can recommend Le Foyer for coffee or a slice of pizza (very friendly staff), and Le Meleze (great view to enjoy coffee for a mid morning break). Skied across to La Rosiere for a day and found it much busier and not worth the effort to have to endure the long, long Bellecombe 1 button lift back (it bites when you first set off!). We thought the hotel was great for what we wanted but the big disappointment was the food. We like buffet-style food but the salad choice was unusual to say the least with luke warm veg intermingled with traditional salad. Other courses, pasta and main were also luke warm at best (other than one night). Something for the hotel to focus on I feel because it spoiled the overall experience of the hotel. The waiting staff were, however, extremely pleasant and attentive. Apres ski in La Thuile appears to be almost non existent but maybe we just didn't go to the right places at the righ times. Overall the holiday was superb. I would recommend La Thuile for its ski-ing and, equally, I would recommend the Planibel hotel for its location - but hope that the food improves.

On a cheap ski holiday with Crystal Ski, from the UK, we were 3 guys sharing a one bedroom apartment (Two single beds and a sofa bed). 'Planibel' has both hotel rooms and apartments.

I can't say there were any real problems with the accommodations, but the size of the apartment and the quality of fixtures was the minimum acceptable for the price paid.

We found the night time options limited and expensive. No real atmosphere/entertainment at any of the 3 (THREE) bars at Planibel. One bar in the hotel had a happy hour in the early evening, where beer was 'reduced' to 6 Euro a bottle !!! (Prices that are not really that happy).

The onsite grocery store and butchers provided lots of choices for any meals you wanted to eat in the apartment.

We found the hotel staff (especially those in the restaurant) to look down on people staying in the apartments and instead provide superior service to those staying in the hotel. This attitude was also exhibited by the reception staff when trying to explain to them that the internet access code they provided wasn't working (I'm an IT professional).

The skiing was great, Crystal Ski (The tour company) were great, and the staff at the ski rental shop were great. But, everything else was a bit of a let down.

The nearby town (10 minutes walk) offers some options for dining and drinking, but nothing that you would put on a list of "must do's". I think we'll be looking elsewhere for next year.

AND, make sure your tour company doesn't use Thomson airlines to "TRY" and fly you out and back (But that's for another review).
