Expensive but lives up to the expectations. Warm but unpretentious service, personalized to your needs in a spectacular location. Great wine list and lots to do in the area. Would return. While hot breakfasts are available, they could consider offering a bit more than cereals and breads as part of the buffet breakfast. The place It is still pretty wonderful though.

Dear AradTraveler,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of the lodge, and thank you for the kind words as well. We are very pleased indeed that you enjoyed your stay with us. I have discussed your comments about the breakfast buffet with the Executive Chef, and he is considering now what else may be done.
We certainly look forward to having you back in future.

Wow....is all you can say at every turn in Wharekauhau. Nico and Kristy are the best hosts and made us feel so welcome. It was truly like we were in their own home. Nothing was too much trouble which made us really feel like we were on vacation.

The drive to Wharekauhau is LONG so be ready for it. But man is it worth every minute. Once you get to the estate, it opens up into a huge expanse of land dotted with guest lodges. The main guest area is like a huge mansion with living rooms, game rooms, and my dream kitchen :). A short walk from the main house is the guest lodges. Similarly decorated in a country luxury feel, each room makes you feel like you've stepped into a magazine. The rooms are purposely warmed upon your entry and the balcony opens up to views of the water. The best way for me to describe our stay is "calming." It's just the sort of place that makes you want to take deep breaths of the cool breeze, fresh air and sounds of grass in the wind. Sounds amazing right? And we weren't dreaming either.

The dinner was made according to our dietary preference. It was amazing that they actually printed out a "halal" menu just for us. The chef impressed us with a delectable meal and dessert. Breakfast was equally delicious and laid out in a 'country' style on the main island in the kitchen. They even made us a lunch to go.

We did the. The guide was excellent and took us all around the property and on the black sand beach. She made sure our safety was her #1 priority but made sure we had lots of fun too. Take the time to walk around the property - they will give you a map (the property is huge). You get a real sense of the beauty of it that way!

We regretted not staying longer. However, the whole time we were there we kept saying 'this is the place we'd want to bring our whole family back to vacation in.' We cannot wait for our return.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with the rooms. Everyone one of them is equally gorgeous!

I think I'll remember wharekauhau forever. Everything was jaw droppingly amazing. Kristie and Nico make you feel like part of the family. The views are stunning. The food was better than any I've had before, with great local wine to match. The stars were so close you could almost touch them. A working farm, you have to take a tour. The guide is knowledgable and friendly and will show you stuff you can only see here. My favorite part of an amazing trip.

We re-visited the wonderful Wharekauhau Country Estate this week, and were not disappointed. It's been about three years since our last stay, and in that time new rooms have been built, and many changes made in the big 'house', including a great recreation room.

Only two minor criticisms / suggestions: I really miss having a full length mirror in the dressing room. Call it a neurotic fear of laddered tights, tucked-in-underwear, or badly styled back-of-hair - I need to KNOW! The other matter was that the milk in our minibar fridge had turned to yoghurt before we even opened it, which resulted in a disturbing morning cup of tea. Floating bits ....

The lodge is so far from anywhere you forget that the world is a busy place. Fantastic. We were so relaxed we didn't even mind sharing the road with about 300 sheep, moving our car at whatever speed the sheep decided was right for the moment.

Go there!

Room Tip: The Wetlands rooms are stunning, overlooking a bird-inhabited lake, and the ocean in the distance.

Dear Travellerholic,
Thank you for your review and recent stay at Wharekauhau Country Estate. I appreciate your comment in regards to the mirror on the dressing door, as I too have the same fears! The mirrors for the doors should be in place shortly in all three new rooms. As for the milk in the fridge, my apologies for the unwelcome surprise, particularly first thing in the morning. We use the small cartons of milk for food hygene reasons, but sadly that prevents us from checking inside the carton. We can only assume the date on the outside ensures the milk is fresh. My apologies that your particular carton had turned.
We are however glad that you returned and got to experience Wharekauhau again, this time more so than your last visit when you were unwell, and hope to see you again- hopefully sooner than three years.
With Kind Regards,
Kristy de Lange

I spent three days here with my husband and daughter following her graduation. From my initial contact with the resort until the moment we departed the service was exemplary. One look at the website will show you how superb the location is; but the fantastic location is matched by warm professional service where your every need is anticipated. I would highly recommend the quad bike tour which is loads of fun. A walk along the beach with the resident dog is also mandatory.

Room Tip: All the rooms are superb
