“An experience we will NEVER forget”
Reviewed 2 May 2013

I recently had the privilege to dine at Wharekauhau Estate for lunch with some very lucky clients. The trip started with an incredible helicopter flight from Wellington docklands, over the Rimutaka Mountain range, and down into the Wairarapa. Seeing the Wairarapa for the first time by air was breathtaking, and views out to the sea were just beautiful. We landed on the lawn in front of the Estate about noon and were greeted by the Manager with a complimentary tray of bubbles. why not!? We felt like royalty, this place is very special. We were ushered to the formal lounge to enjoy our bubbles while we waited for the rest of our party to land on the second helicopter. We all sat there admiring the incredible view before us out across the lawn and beyond to Palliser Bay. The mere position of this Lodge alone would score 5 stars! Soon lunch was ready, a choice of 4 entrees and mains (party of 18) ranging from Rabbit to Seafood to Lamb (yum!!) and Steak. No one out of the party of 18 were disappointed! after lunch we had time to explore the Lodge, upstairs an amazing games room, and an even better Men's cigar room, fantastic. The Manager also showed us the accommodation, just in case, one day we bring our sweethearts back, just magic, I hope to do so one day. Wonderful day, an experience we will never forget!

Heaven on earth here: a few thousand acres of green hills, gullys, gorges, panoramic sheep pastures, all rolling down to beach and sparkling turquoise waters. Luxury does not begin to describe the sumptuous feeling of the Cotswald-style inn itself, where exquisite meals and scrupulously paired local wines are served to the very few guests who can afford this stellar level of accommodation. Beyond doubt, one of the most beautiful places you may never have the opportunity or the budget see or rest your weary head at. My wife and I were the pauper guests arriving not by personal-sized helicopter, but by chauffered car (a Holden - look it up). All the same, we never felt patronized, once there. King and queen for a day or two.

Room Tip: No doubt the rooms in the main building are great, but our cottage suite with its walk-out to croppe...

Planned a lovely weekend in the Wairarapa and this was our treat for lunch. Probably the best food in the area with exceptional service. Staff where attentive and showed us around the lodge in a very friendly way. Couldn't find fault. Its just nice.

After a memorable lunch here some 7 years ago, it was with some apprehension that we decided to make a return visit. We were accompanied by two of our friends who are no strangers to the life of good food and wines. We travelled by car from Wellington, a 2 hour drive on another of the north islands exceptional sunny days. The warmth of our reception by Arielle (the hostess) matched the weather and we were taken, (a welcoming glass of a Malborough Sauvignon Blanc in hand), on a guided tour of the impressively decorated facilities of the main lodge. We were then ushered to the dining room where we received prompt and efficient attention from the personable dining room staff. The lunch menu for the day was an inclusive 3 course meal comprising an entree, main course and a dessert, with 3 choices for each. The meal opened wth a surprise amus bouche- a sashimi tuna in an Asian style dressing. For the entree, the seared scallops served with morsels of kumara and corn in a chilli-ginger soy sauce was a winner. For the main course, all three offerings were sampled - the speckled Park Cross eye fillet, the roasted Wharekauhau lamb loin and the Palliser Bay snapper. All were accompanied by complimentary vegetables and sauces. Desserts tried were the swiss chocolate torte and a unique pineapple ravioli with coconut sorbet. The only slight negative to the meal was that the eye fillets were served as medium rather than the medium-rare requested. Notwithstanding, their taste and texture were superb. We ordered two wines with the meal - a Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc and a Schubert 2004 Cabernet Saugvignon Merlot. Our guest, who tasted the red wine declared it drinkable but not exactly what he expected. A few minutes after accepting the wine, Greg, the sommellier appeared at the table, tested the wine and, usolicited by ourselves, declared it not up to standard. Another 2004 bottle was similarly rejected and we ultimately settled on a 2008 variety which proved excellent. This is the first time any of us had experienced a sommellier rejecting a wine without a request and, in our opinion, this was a demonstration not only of the knowledge of the sommellier but also of the high standard which the lodge seeks to maintain. Following the meal, we had coffee and and a digestif in the open-air courtyard adjacent to the dining room. We then walked off our excesses with a tour through the grounds. All in all, it appears Wharekauhau has continued to maintain its high standards and, if one cannot afford to stay there, then take the option of visiting for lunch. It is an experience which one will not forget.

Helicoptering in and landing at the front door of Wharekauhau is special. But the staff and management made it that much more perfect. Anything you asked for was no problem and done for you in seconds. From the second you arrive, they were there to show you around, learn about you and your interests, and assist, in any way they can, to make your vacation that much more special. Richard, the manager, was great. He knew our entire itinerary but when he learned that my wife loved chocolate, he immediately combined our wine tour with a visit to a chocolate factory! It was just perfect!
The lodge is beautiful. The rooms are tucked away and gives you the feeling of privacy and that they're part of your home. The farm tour was great and the shearing of the sheep put a huge check mark off our bucket list. We couldn't have been happier with Wharekauhau and would highly recommend you spending time. We can only hope we'll be there again.

My girlfriend and I had been saving for several months to come to Wharekauhau after my parents got married here. Everything was perfect, the service, the room, the food, the wine, the environment.

The staff were exceptional. They went above and beyond to meet any request.

The ATV tour is a MUST do!

This is the best Lodge I ever stay in New Zealand, from all points.

From the moment we arrive at Wellington Ferry terminal, pick up service by Paul was wonderful. And when we arrive Wharekauhau warm greeting by Richard who introduce us to the rest of staff as well as give tour of the Lodge facilities.

The Villa is beautifully located in front of farm with great view of ocean.

The food and wines are excellent, especially with great somilier like Greg who will match food with local wine nicely.

Activites also great, they have top quality Clay Shooting target.

Wharekauhau simply the best Lodge we ever stay in New Zealand.
