“Rainy Season; Canopy; & Mexican info”
Reviewed 20 July 2003

Went to The Decameron in the last two weeks of June, and it was fantastic. Stayed in bloke 4, and the rooms were very clean, spacious, and with King Size beds, plus WICKED air-conditioning!! (We were lucky being on the second floor though, because apparently when the crabs came out at night, they tapped on the doors of all ground floor occupants!) The weather was great considering it was the rainy season - only rained at night! There was a massive lightning storm one night, which, although scary at the time, was good to watch, and the next day we were able to see the mountains across the ocean which we hadn't known existed! Food was excellent, although, against what everyone else seems to say, the Thai restaurant was my favourite, as I found the Italian food quite oily which didn't agree with my stomach on both occasions we dined there! Entertainment was good, although found some Americans took the water basketball event a bit too seriously - it's only a game!!! Animation team work sooo hard though, as we saw them practising for the evening entertainment at 9 in the morning, and the quality of their acts puts the UK's "normal holiday destinations" reps to shame! These people knew how to put on a show! On events outside the complex, we'd recommend the 'canopy tour' - but don't book it through First Choice, as the company that does the tour have a hut by pool 1, and it's cheaper! If you want to get an idea of what swinging through the rainforest 60+ft in the air is like, visit the web-site at vallarta-adventures.com (You can't take cameras unless you can attach them round your neck, as you need both hands, but they do video it for you, which is available in DVD or VHS format - about 30mins footage, and they do get shots of everyone in your group) The sailing adventure by the same company is also good - expect all drinks (which are included in cost) to be served in pint glasses - even the cocktails!! If you want to just see the dolphins, rather than swim with them or anything, there is a viewing platform whenever you do a tour via the vallarta adventure team (where they do their 'swimming with dolphins adventure') - you may find that's enough for you!! Walk along to Bucerias if you want to get some souvenirs - it's cheaper than Vallarta itself, but we found that we didn't want to barter with them as it seemed like they had a poorer way of living (and the goods were already cheaper than in Vallarta itself) Good thing to note is that there is a time difference, despite being so close - Bucerias is 1 hour behind the hotel, so don't head down there early on a Sunday morning! Finally, having the hotel made up of a lot of Mexicans was great to get a feel for the culture (despite being an AI accommodation) - boy, can they dance!! The only thing I'd say though is that there seems to be an American/Mexican grudge going on, and if you're an English speaker, they sometimes assume you're American - take a dictionary with you, learn at least how to say 'please' & 'thank-you', as you ARE in THEIR country! They appreciate you when you at least try! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed it!!

My husband & I stayed at the Royal Decameron last July for one week. We had stayed at the Holiday Inn closer to Puerto Vallarta the last time we were in Mexico, so were a bit concerned that the Decmaeron was going to be too far away from town. We needn't have worried !! We walked into Bucerius one day and had a great time !! The people are so friendly and helpful, and the vendors are charming. We took the hotel "shuttle" into Puerto Vallarta one day and spent an enjoyable few hours re-aquainting ourselves with the town. We really love wandering down the boardwalk and taking in the bustle of it all !! One other day we took a cruise to Las Caletas - Wonderful!!!! The rest of our trip we spend at the hotel complex, and enjoyed everything about it. When we first walked into our room, we thought it was a bit more "rustic" than we expected, but within minutes were wondering what we were worried about. It was nice and big, cool, had a huge shower and was kept very clean the whole week. The restaurants were great. We usually stick to the buffets and only go to the "a la carte" restaurants once or twice. There is always something new to try when we go to the buffet, and we really try to try something new or different at least once a day. You never know when you will find a new favorite !! We also tried the daily "special" at the bars scattered around the grounds...... The only downside to the whole place was the older guy at the towel hut. We found him so rude, that we ended up buying beach towels , and avoided the towel hut altogether the last few days we were there. Not a bad idea to bring a beach towel from home anyway - the hut closes at 6:00, but the pools close at 8:00 (and the beach way later). If you keep your towels overnight, they won't give you any more the next day until late in the afternoon !!!! (even though our World of Vacations rep. and the hotel staff said it was no problem to keep our towels, you can't convince the guy at the towel hut !!) One other thing - the vendors on the beach are WAY less aggressive than the ones closer to town, and they will leave you alone with just a shake of your head. They don't even come out to wander the beach until around lunchtime !! We would go back to the Decameron in a heartbeat.

We were at Royal Decameron from July 7 - July 11. This was our 3rd trip to Mexico, the previous two to Cancun. We decided to go somewhere less touristy and with a slower pace and thinking that this would be in PV, we found Royal Decameron. Although I try to keep in mind that this was a vacation and to not get picky, I do have issues to address. 1. The food was terrible, most meals we typically ate a lot of salad.
Breakfast was the best. 2. The beds were the worst I have ever seen, it was like laying on a board. Make sure to bring your own pillows. 3.
Arrange your arrival time late in the day, we arrived around 10:00 a.m.
and had to wait until 2:00 to get a room. 4. If you like millions of kids running around the place, this is it! We spent the majority of our time at the adult pool. Our kids are 11 and 14, they did not want to be with the young kids and could not stay at the adult pool.

Things to enjoy: 1. The ocean - we rode a lot of great waves and enjoyed the time. Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean are my sunglasses! 2.
Take a trip into town or the country side.

In the end, we won't be returning to the Royal Decameron. Maybe it's back to Cancun next year?

I spent a week at the Royal Decameron in Nuevo Vallarta, and I loved it.
*The staff were friendly and polite *The entertainment was excellent *The facilities were great(Disco, pools, etc...) *The food was fabulous *The beaches were clean and beautiful bottom line- it's not like a 5 star hotel in Canada ( cable is limited, no movies, we didn't get face clothes every day)but I would go back in a heart beat!

From the amazing food (quality & quantity) to the friendly service (always a smile) and the cleaness of the roooms, the pools, the restaurants and the beach, you will love the time you spend in this complex. I went there in May 2001 and I'm returning next July 19, 2003.
I've visited many AI places in Mexico and other central and south america places. When recomending a vacation to anyone, Royal Decameron in Puerto Vallarta is my first pick. Believe me you will enjoy every bit of it.

My husband and I just returned from PV on our first visit there. This place is great if what you want to do is relax. If you have children (or don't mind them), it would be better, since there are so many running around. But if you just want to look at adults, don't come to this place. It is 1/2 an hour from PV, so significantly less traffic.
The food was excellent, except for that "seafood" buffet. THe "must eat" is the mexican fiesta night buffet. On other nights, definitely make reservations even if you have to wake up with the sun. The place is clean and very well kept. The service and security is amazing. If you want five star service at a 3-4 star place, this is for you. If you are looking for fancy, this is not it. It is a simple place, but very very nice. For those of you who enjoy boos, the most popular bars are the ones on the beach, but I recommend you go to the one in the Flamingos lobby after 4. Juan makes the best drinks because less people go to this bar. One more thing, it is best to go anytime but July thru September, it is scorching hot and the pools are not very cooling. I will definitely return, especially once we have children.

The Decameron is truely a wonderful hotel. We had a great time. The rooms are kept clean, a little small if you're 3 people in a room though. We had the pleasure of being in building 1, Oceanview balcony-- that made the whole trip worthwhile. The food was good, there is lots of selection and a restaurant is always open. The Italian place is the best of all of them. We met plenty of people from England and Vancouver, not too many from the US. The hotel did have quite a few couples, so next time we will be going back with our boyfriends for sure. Overall, the weather was great, sunny and hot everyday. We had a lot of fun by the bar (Gabriel makes the best Tequila Poppers) The clubs in downtown Puerto Vallarta were a lot of fun as well. We did the pub crawl, which was sooo much fun. Visited 3 clubs in one night and met a lot of people staying at other hotels. Would definitely go back again. It was a great place to be.
