“I'm really going to miss those pies...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014

Our goal was to try as many of the variety of new Zealand pies as we could on while we were in that part of New Zealand in April and May. We did well, but sadly were not able to pick an overall winner, they were all great! We didn't get to try as many treats as pies, but they certainly looked good. If you are on the Alpine highway, I recommend stopping in.

“Very Good Savoury Pies”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

We were driving from Greymouth to Kaikoura and stopped at Sheffield simply because we live in Sheffield (UK). The pies here were very good and that's were it ends.

The shop/café is tiny and in need of some refurbishment, it is about the only place around and there aren't any facilities. The ladies serving were OK but they didn't put themselves out to be friendly which surprised us as during the first ten days of our trip everyone else we'd met was very friendly......maybe they had just had a really busy lunchtime and needed a break!

Back to the pies we had a savoury and a sweet one each (a bit greedy I know but we were hungry) The Sheffield pie and the Steak and Kidney were very good; the pastry was light and both had plenty of filling. The fruit pies we ate later in the day as we were too full and maybe that was why they seemed a little heavier and not as flavoursome.

“Good Pit Stop - well, apart from the absence of Washrooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2014

For motorists travelling from Christchurch over the Arthur's Pass to Greymouth, this is, in the absence of eateries en route, handy for a pie and a hot beverage. It is fairly basic, a couple of tables and a pie counter, but the pies are excellent (the Stockman's Pie is particularly recommended) and appears to be well favoured by the locals - a number of grizzled characters were loading up on pies when we dropped in. There are no washrooms - I recall restraining ourselves until we reached Arthur's Pass village, but, in terms of pies at least, it, er, does the business.

Give it a go.

“Still the best!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014

Luckily we only get by the Sheffield Pie shop every couple of years when visiting family otherwise I'd be in too often.
The choice of pies is great but we stuck with Steak and Kidney which was nice and rich.
Good light flaky pastry.
Finished off with a Kiwi staple - Lamingtons, which the nice lady kindly added some real whipped cream to.
Pot of Tea for two is the best value if you are old school and not after a fancy coffee which they do too.
We had been out of NZ for a couple of years so it was nice to hear the friendly chat between the staff and the customers also. Real country Kiwis! Thanks girls.

“No washroom facilities”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2014

We stopped at this café on the way to Arthur's Pass in a 400km journey. This was the perfect time for lunch and the 'award winning pie' sign was enticing. It was only when preparing to leave that we noticed the sign that there were no washrooms. The pies were good and we were impressed by their gluten free range, but we would not have stopped there had we known that they did not have facilities for travellers. They directed us to the nearest public toilets some 600m away. They were impossible to find and may have been removed. The ones up the road (about 9 km we think) in Springfield had no lights and no natural light so could not be used. In desperation we asked the local motel if we could use their facilities and they kindly obliged. Cafes in the UK are required to provide washrooms and although this does not appear to be a requirement in New Zealand, any café which values its reputation should surely do so.
