“Lovely Break”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

I recently visited Barnsdale Lodge Hotel. This is a charming period hotel with staff who could not do enough for us. Our room was very comfortable and the good was first class, both for dinner and breakfast.
The choices and quality of food was to be reccommended.

The hotel is in an excllent setting and we had a view of Rutland Water from our room along with the hotel's herd of highland cattle. The hotel is built round a delightful courtyard and when we were there the weather was lovely and it was a delight to sit in the garden with a drink before dinner.
I would reccommend this hotel.

Thank you to all at Barnsdale Lodge for the excellent facilities, food and service for my daughter's wedding. It is a beautiful venue, which offers every opportunity to add personal touches and use the hotel's grounds to add to the fun. Excellence without pomposity

This is a really good country hotel, friendly welcome, good room with free wi-fi and we had an excellent dinner in the nicely decorated gazebo. Our visit though was on a Saturday evening which coincided with a wedding party at the hotel. Cue late night noise from the disco and wedding guests (inebriated) enjoying themselves. Think about this if making a booking.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is away from the courtyard!!!!

Thankyou for taking the time to write this review.

I must point out to anyone reading this that the vast majority of weddings at Barnsdale Lodge take place in the Barn Suite, which is on the opposite side of site to the main restaurants and the bedrooms, so disruption is very minimal. We host many weddings and often have a mixture of wedding guests and hotel diners/residents.

I am pleased that you enjoyed other aspects of your stay including dinner in our conservatory.

We hope to see you again soon,

Kind regards

We were served by Thomas. What an extremely friendly manager; looking after our every needs. He's hard working, thoughtful.
I'd highly recommend a visit to the restaurant. Now we're tempted to stay here in the hotel.

It's a little pricey, but your paying for the location.

The hotel also has lodges across the road from the main building down a gated gravel drive..I'd stay here any day over a classic hotel room.
We stayed in the one called Whitwell..Like a huge 3 bedroom shed but very tastefully done..could do with AC on hot nights but we survived..3 double bedrooms & one shower room, 1 bathroom. The beds are all single pushed together which is a bummer as you feel the join, the mattresses are too soft for me too..but this is a personal thing..no toppers...the rooms have about 60cm/2ft around a double bed so noir huge but I'd still prefer to stay here than a hotel.
Good kitchen & reasonably well equipped..you need to request a maid..if you need the place cleaned or bins emptied etc..
Freeview TV's x 2 one in the lounge & the second in the Master bedroom.
BBQ outside on the patio with a picnic table & chairs too.
Two couples could easily have a week here..3 couples might be pushing the space a little.
The place takes dogs too..I'm allergic but there didn't appear to be any trace of previous dogs :-)
We loved our stay here..we had mixed weather but it was just GREAT! & only 3 miles from civilisation OAKHAM

Room Tip: I think they're all the same..we stayed in Whitwell Lodge

We wanted to celebrate our son's 21st birthday at a good quality restaurant and thought Barnsdale Lodge would fit the bill. We visited a few days in advance to see what it was like internally and chose a table. On arrival on the day the staff had no record of our booking and even when we explained it was our son's birthday they were very off hand and couldn't even be bothered to wish him a happy birthday. We were told we could have a table but were rushed straight to it, without the opportunity to sit in the courtyard or adjacent sitting room with a drink whilst we selected from the menu. One waitress seemed reluctant to serve us but eventually two young men came over and they were excellent, although they didn't bother to say happy birthday. Starters were good but mains disappointing and over priced. Whilst we were eating we noticed someone who appeared to be a manager going from table to table. When he came to our table he just asked if we were enjoying the meal and we had to mention the forgotten booking. He said his staff had told him! In that case, why didn't he come straight to us and apologise and say Happy Birthday? Some restaurants also make other small gestures such as piping Happy Birthday on the dessert plate but absolutely no acknowledgement of the event here. We left very disappointed.

Room Tip: We did not stay

Thankyou for taking the time to write this review.

My apologies for the confusion over your booking, I can assure you that this is not our normal standard; we also always put a sparkler in guests' desserts and where possible do a "birthday plate" with happy birthday written around the edge. I am unsure of why this was not the case when you visited but rest assured that I will investigate this matter further.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience further with you and would encourage you to contact me in person, either by telephone at the hotel or via email - pfreeman@barnsdalelodge.co.uk

I look forward to hearing from you,

Kind regards

We held our daughter's 18 th birthday dinner for 14 family members here. We were given a private dining room with access to a beautiful garden and we also had our breakfast in here after our overnight stay. The service was excellent and everything we had arranged in advance including drinks reception, meal ordering and special dietary need were delivered correctly. The bedrooms were all clean, comfortable and a decent size as were the bathrooms. The central courtyard is very attractive and the lounge was comfortable. The room I stayed in was quite warm as the weather was hot. The food we ate in the evening was excellent, but I was not too impressed with breakfast as choice was quite limited and the buffet table feels like it is in a corridor. I did enjoy the scrambled egg and smoked salmon and the home made granola.

Overall we were very impressed with how the hotel catered for our small group and our 18 year old was very happy with her party.
