Nido del Pellegrino
Reviewed 18 March 2012

If you look up "perfect relaxation holiday", then "Nido del Pellegrino" should show up as definition & real life example.
Where to start?
Seemless organization from time of arrival in Sicily - you can lay back and relax from the moment you get off the plane even if you actually have to travel from the main island to the tiny island of Favignana: taxi shuttles and high speed ferry service tickets are all organized and booked by the staff.
Warm greeting and efficient check-in: Rita was waiting for us upon arrival. She came out to greet us, showed us our apartment, ran through apartment amenities, list of things to do and see & organized with the scooter and bycicle rental store to drop of the scooter to our door step same evening. She was always available to answer questions and offer options.
Exceptional and friendly service - luxury in every detail: Salvatore would drive in from town every monring and delivery fresh bread and croissants to each apartment - who can say no to waking up to fragrant and delicious smell of bakery, waiting for you on your private terrace???
The apartments are ALL beautiful - seriously you can't go wrong no matter what you choose (we asked so see the others for future stays, and the owner Elisabetta was happy to show us).Everything was sotlessly clean, Mediterranean simple and tasteful interior design, extremely comfortable beds, well equiped kitchenette and fabulous bathrooms;
The residence is set on a breautiful promontory, with cool sea breeze countering the hot mediterranean sun (could sun bathe even during hottest hours); the Nido has a private sea access - if you love rocks its the place to be, otherwise you can saunter off to the two beaches accessible on either side of the promotory.
There is a reason its called "nido del pellegrino" - there are a couple of pelegrin falcons which nest in the area, and there is nothing more enchanting than watching them catch the warm air currents as they swoop and free-fall above.
We stayed barely 9 days, but it felt like a month. Haven't enjoyed a holiday like this in a long time. The island of Favignana is a breathtaking and magical island, the Nido del Pellegrino is the crowning jewel.
Congratulations to Elisabetta and her husband for creating such a paradise; a great thank you to Rita and Salvatore for their friendliness and warmth. We toured the other facilities on the island, and Nido del Pellegrino will be our choice every time.

Nido del pellegrino is one of those places that you may either love or hate depending on your expectations and mood. It is located at the top of one of the most fascinating bays of the island of favignana and there is nothing else around but sky, sea and wind at times.
The building, originally barracks, has been restored into small apartements, not all of them have a seaview. For the view you need to choose the suites. The flatlets are nicely restored and fully furnished. All you may need is there, accurately selected and fully working.
Nice and willing staff.
You will need either a small car or a moped or a bike that you can easily rent in the village or through staff. I had a bike, that is somewhat adventurous (there is no light at night on last part of the route that is in itself pretty rough). If you are looking for some liveliness or you are planning to go back and forth many times a day chose at least a motorbike.
Now, having said all this, I must confess that I am biased as I am truly fond of the area and I would like to spend most of my time there and I don't mind neither the adventure nor the isolation.
Eventually I was pleasantly surprised by the overall comfort and service level in such surroundings, even though to my personal taste I found some dissonance between the wilderness and the refinement of fittings.
I would definitely reccommend it to a friend. I would love to go back one day.

Let's start with the good stuff!

We can't fault the room. It was clean. Excellent bathroom with amazing shower. The location is strange. It used to be a military site so it has a sort of ominous feeling. Seagulls are constantly squawking and circling overhead. However if you like this kind of bucolic isolation then perhaps it's perfect. We didn't mind the solitude but we also rented a scooter so we were able to get around the island easily. Without a scooter or car you are stuck.

Ok here's the thing. We paid 120 euros a night and stayed 3 nights. Guess what?
No bed making!!! That's right 120 euros doesn't get your bed made.
It doesn't get you fresh towels.
Do you know why? Because this is not a hotel. It's a residence!!
That was the sorry excuse repeated over and over by the staff even though there was a sheet in the room that stated that your room was to be cleaned every day. When we showed this sheet to the woman she said that it was an old piece of paper and the rules had changed though of course this was not mentioned to us.

When we asked her if you paid 120 euros and were on holiday would you like to have to make your own bed she had no answer.
The bigger point ladies and gentleman is that if you are on holiday do you really want to be having this conversation? The woman held her ground and defended the fact that making the bed wasn't included. I ask anyone who's traveled the world during their lifetime ...have you ever paid 120 euros a night and stayed for 3 days and not had your bed made????

Obviously, I don't think anyone who travels pays 120 euros and expects to use the same towel for 3 days...by the way the towels aren't terrycloth they are that waffle type that you sometimes find on bathrobes...very flimsy indeed!

We were asked to pay upfront for all 3 nights when we got there. We obliged. That was it! They were done with us.
for over 360 euros (there was tax on top of that)
you get nothing. That's it!
There is no restaurant, no breakfast, no pool, no one at the property at night except a security guard who sat in his car.

Safety wasn't an issue. Favignana is extremely safe. The point is again...why are you paying 120 euros to be in an isolated part of the island with no amenities?

There are definitely places in Favignana, Sicily, and Italy where you pay 120 euros or less and get all the things that Nido Del Pellegrino doesn't have.

We were fair in stating that the room was fine. But for 120 euros a night that's not enough!

Stay at the the Nido Del Pellegrino if you speak Italian (we do but they don't speak English and you'll not be able to communicate otherwise) and if you liking making your own bed.

I’m the owner and I want to explain the real situation to people who reads “do not stay here”.
The “Nido del Pellegrino” ( The name “Peregrin-Falcon ’s nest” is due to a kind of hawk that lives right here) is located in a 7 hectares land rising sheer from the sea. It was an ancient military defense, chosen because of its breath-taking view and we wanted to preserve its natural “bucolic isolation” to offer a very relaxing holiday.
It’s not a hotel, but a new residence/ guest house . In all of the 11 apartments there’s a private veranda with table, chairs and deckchairs.
We clean and change the household linen 1 time a week, but we change towels every day if guests ask for it.
There’s not a reception but just an office clerk with secretarial responsibilities, so we ask for the advance payment because the office works from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m and from 3 p.m to 6 p.m., so we may not be there for check out.
The location is 3 Km far from the village and I always suggest to rent a scooter or a car or a bike to visit the rest of the Isle or to go to the village, but I always notice that our guests prefer to stay in their quiet garden or on our private rocks on the sea to sunbathe.
We speak Italian, but we also have English and French assistance: I didn’t think it was necessary for the guys “here above” because one of them is from Naples.
By the end, I suggest this place to every person who wants to have a relaxing holiday, far from the noise of the tourists, watching the sea and listening the seagulls, respecting nature that gives us hospitality, paying for 60 Euros per person in june.
