Before I write my review, I should say that our stay here in early July 2004 brought home how much a host adds to your experience - and the host at Hillside is worth five stars, as far as I'm concerned.
This converted Georgian post office has been added onto and reconfigured to make a fine place to stay. I think the rooms are located in the addition, so they are modern, with excellent facilities and comfortable beds; an exceptionally pleasant sleeping experience. In addition, the hotel is only a few miles from Guildford (where friends of ours live) and within a stone's throw of around 30 golf courses for those golfing enthusiasts reading this review.
That would be reason enough to stay at the hotel, but it does come with at least three additional bonuses, the sitting area/living room, Izzy & Oscar, and your host Oliver Baum(?):
Doors from the sitting area look out to a beautiful garden, which on a sunny day would probably look even better than it did when we stayed (hey, it's England, it was raining the days we were there). The honor bar is stocked with top-shelf names & the wines, imported by Oliver's father, are great. This is a very inviting and comfortable space.
Izzy & Oscar (you can ask Oliver about the latter's name) are your host's two cute little dogs who were very friendly and kept my daughter occupied/entertained while we sat with our friends in the sitting area.
All of this would make Hillside a good place to stay on these merits alone. The extra touch is the owner, Oliver, who made our two days there even better. The first thing he did was give us another room for my oldest child. He said that as the hotel wasn't filled, he thought my son might like the privacy after spending a week sharing a room with his younger siblings - and at no extra charge!
On his own (his wife had taken their newborn son, Hugh, to visit family elsewhere), he made our drinks in the bar, brewed some tea for our friends, and generally made us feel very welcome, though he must have been harried. Then, and in spite of being on his own, cooked dinner for the eight (!) of us later that evening, including our friends as our guests (NOTE: Dinner is only available to guests at the hotel.) And we didn't make it easy, as everyone just had to order a different appetizer and main course. Each of the meals was excellent (the man is an accomplished chef) and even though dishes came out in a staggered fashion because he was on his own, the food kept flowing. Oh yes, and he cooked for six other people in addition to our party that evening.
If you have business in Guildford or you have any reason to be in the area, I can think of no better place to stay.
