“Great hotel, amazing sea views and great food!”
Reviewed 10 October 2012

I stayed here for 3 nights over the Jubilee long weekend in June, and that was the second time I have visited the hotel. Hotel has very attentive staff, cosy rooms and amazing views overlooking the sea, especially from the panoramic restaurant which serves excellent, fresh food. There are lovely grounds surrounding the hotel and it has a nice swimming pool and sauna.
I would not hesitate to recommend this lovely hotel and hope to be returning there next year.

We stayed at Raven Hall for a night whilst attending a wedding. We were able to check into the lodge early to change for the ceremony...very good service! Our accommodation was in one of the lodges away from the main hotel and I must say that I was very impressed. The views over to Robin Hoods Bay are absolutely stunning and uninterrupted.

The lodges are large and very well appointed, with everything you could need for a stay. The main room incorporates a sitting area and small kitchen. The lounge area has a large TV and log burner complete with logs and kindling. We did not need this as the electric heating was more than adequate, but it did make the lodge look very stylish. Decoration was very good and modern. Some of the reviews contradict this and therefore there may be some variation between lodges. The bathroom was large, well heated and well decorated. Bed linen, towels and bath robes were very good quality and toiletries of a good standard. There is an individual patio area to the rear of the lodges, which has table and chairs. Excellent for summer stays. There is also access to countryside rambling and the golf course at the back of the property.

I have heard mixed reviews on the service in the main hotel. We are not a good judge of this as we only attended the wedding. The staff were very pleasant, however!

Room Tip: If you want to use this hotel as a base for exploring or golf...the lodges are excellent

We had a short stay in one of the lodges overlooking the bay, the view is amazing, the room was clean, tidy and very comfortable it was so quiet even though there was a wedding on in the hotel. We did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment, the hotel grounds are nice and the views all around are excellent. The only comment we had was that the hotel seems to undersell themselves, their website did not have many pictures of the lodges or grounds, the log burner was already to light once we wanted it which was really nice. Although it is a lodge with some cooking facilities they are basic and consist of a microwave, and 2 electric rings. The location between Whitby and Scarborough make it ideal for anyone who wants to explore both whilst still having somewhere nice and quiet with excellent views.

Short break - not to be repeated
Fantastic location, good albeit small leisure facilities, excellent food that's the good news. Not so good, the bedrooms need freshening up, the first room we were shown to was really poor in size and decor, reception quickly sorted another much better sized room, this still was in need of redecoration and the soft furnishings were shabby but the bathroom was nice and clean and the view from the double aspect windows were superb. The worst and most disturbing aspect was the flies in the dining room, they were everywhere you couldn't eat in peace and I couldn't help wondering where they were coming from yuk! I complained to the dining room manager who seemed to be resigned to them saying that there was nothing they could do about them. I then complained to the duty manager who again said there was nothing they could do, they kept the windows closed and had fly screens, sprayed and swatted them before residents came to eat but they just kept coming eek! this indicates to me that they are breeding inside as flies only lay their grubs on food so... We ate out after this which was a pain as it is a car ride to the nearest eatery.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Robin Hoods Bay would have a fantastic view

We're sorry about the problem with flies which has been widespread among the coastline and other businesses have experienced the same issues. We try to keep windows closed and use air conditioning to cool, but guests tend to open the windows themselves which defeats the object. They are most certainly not breeding inside as we have full pest controls and regular professional checks, this is merely a symptom of the strange weather conditions. I was surprised to read about shabby soft furnishings as practically all our bedrooms have had new replacements, and obviously we do have some rooms smaller than others like many establishments, due to the structure of the old mansion house.

I'm sorry this guest doesn't wish to return but urge others reading the reviews to take circumstances into context. Just today a very satisfied guest has said how wonderful their stay has been and they can't undertand why such negative reviews can be posted.

We stayed here whilst at a friend’s wedding. The views are outstanding as is the service of the people we encountered. Very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We even managed to check in to our lodge earlier than planned which was great. I was disappointment though at the standard of the lodges. Being relatively new I thought the finish could have been better. Weeds on the paved areas, broken slat on the garden seat, light staring to come away from the bathroom ceiling, not a great job of attention to detail when it comes to decorating, poor lighting and very very creaky floors. However, it was very clean, good selection of tea/coffee, plates glasses, toiletries etc. The bed was very comfy however, the sofa wasn’t. It was better to sit on the dining chairs. For nearly £200 including breakfast I did feel that it represented not the best value for money especially when you compare it to cottages in the area. Breakfast was good – good service and a fair selection. It’s a lot of money for us and I felt it was overpriced. Especially when I found that other guests had waited till the last minute and got a room in the hotel plus breakfast for £99. Overall, it was lovely but the price tag isn’t.

Room Tip: try and wait for a last min deal!

We stayed in the Raven Hall Hotel recently. I would just like to warn those intending to stay there to avoid the rooms in the annexe at all costs. Our very small tired, cheaply furnished room looked out onto an ugly asphalt roof. We slept badly on a very old mean sized double bed. The bathroom was designed for a single tiny creature. When we went down to ask at reception if we might change rooms, we were told it was not possible because they were full. B+B cost us £99. The breakfast choices were basic and completely lacked any generosity. The only bread on offer was the cheapest of sliced pan. If they are doing as well as they appear to be doing on tripadviser they might consider shutting that wing down and doing a serious make over. We booked on their website and anticipated a very different experience. It was far from "inspirational". We feel we were mis-sold our room. We should have checked the Terrrible reviews lower down on Tripadviser. We might have been warned off.

We were on a touring holiday for twelve days in the North of England. We moved from hotel to hotel. It was the only bad experience and it happened to be the most expensive.

I'm very disappointed to read "a complete rip off" which is totally misleading. We don't have an annexe, this room is along a corridor of rooms overlooking the side garden and carpark and the roof of the function suite is not ashphalt and has this year been renovated entirely with a new product which is also aesthetically pleasing. The bedroom is of an acceptable standard size for a 3 star hotel, with new carpet, soft furnishings etc. and the bathroom also may be small but acceptable and was totally renovated 4 months ago to a high specification. This whole section of rooms was upgraded earlier this year. It's unfortunate that we were unable to move the guest to one of our larger rooms, but as commented the hotel was fully booked even though it was midweek otherwise we would have been pleased to do so.

Our breakfasts offer a wide range of full english and continental foods and freshly cooked bread is on the buffet as well as ordinary toast.

We have just received our award of excellence for 2012, and although we appreciate constructive comments it's good to discuss before negative reviews are posted. The review posted a few hours earlier than this is entitled excellent holiday.

We visited this hotel in August having been attracted by the fact that it had a golf course ( of which more later ). We had a most comfortable room with a great view over the Bay. The hotel was very well appointed and the food was excellent. The staff were all helpful, cheerful and efficient and we greatly enjoyed our week. However the golf course was a major disappointment as I told the management whilst there. It is too hilly for older golfers, too difficult for youngsters and not well enough kept for regular golfers. The fairways were akin to a meadow mainly because it was alleged that the grass cutters could not be lowered. ( this grass problem also affected the putting green and croquet lawn ). I suggested they give up on the golf course and replace it with a pitch and putt course using the upper part of the golf course. I did suggest that claiming to have a golf course was misleading.

We shall return because we enjoyed the hotel but will leave the golf clubs behind.

Room Tip: choose a bay view room.

Thank you for a lovely review and we're delighted you enjoyed an "excellent holiday". We took on board your comments about the golf course, and it is very difficult to maintain and we are trying to make it clear it is a 9 hole links course rather than of professional club standard. We do have many guests and non residents who use it and we acknowledge it's a very challenging play.

We do hope you make a future visit,
