“Lovely Hotel”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

Booked at last minute and could not have been more delighted. This is a lovely hotel. Beautiful views from bedroom and restaurant. Food was excellent and service could not have been improved on. Would certainly stay again and will be recommending to friends.
On a negative note swimming pool not really suitable for swimmers who want to exercise, too small.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are worth it

We stayed two nights and walked three days. The options are cliff, railway track/cycle way, or moorland if you get in the car and head for the nearby moors. The view down to robin hoods bay is incredible and the walk there is well worthwhile coming back past the historic alum works.
The hotel is historic but well kept and full of character. It's let down by the extension exteriors at the back, by the very small swimming pool and by the rooms at the front which are dated and in need of tlc and refurbishing. The sea view rooms are stunning and worth the extra.
The food is local, fresh, home cooked and first class as is the presentation, rising way above expectations. Clearly the chef takes a pride and doesn't let his standards down. Breakfast is great with lots of options. The dbb package is excellent value.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms at the front - go for a sea view.

To start with lots of positives - Raven Hall is in a stunning location - near Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. If you have not visited this part of North Yorkshire you really should give it a try. As a southerner I didnt know the area till my first visit about 17 years ago and I have come to love it - as lots of people do. We stayed in a lodge with wood fire burner, lovely bed and a view that would compete with anywhere else in the country. I have once stayed in the main hotel building which was OK but nothing special - the Lodge did feel special. The staff were generally helpful and friendly - so all good till dinner time. We booked a table in the restaurant - and were pleased to see a fairly short menu - hoping that by offering fewer choices the quality would be good. Sadly not - fish for a starter with no flavour and a stodgy, solid serving of risotto. The two mains were very poor - with sauces that tasted industrial. I suspect this kitchen - like so many pubs - is assembling and warming up pre-prepared food and not doing much cooking at all. I seriously doubt the loin of pork and sauce I was offered had been originally cooked within a 100 mile radius of Raven Hall. I would like to see a response from the manager? So in conclusion stay at this Hotel and enjoy this lovely location - but eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: Go for a lodge

We visited the Raven Hall Hotel in May 2013 for friends' wedding. The venue and reception were really good indeed - very nice room and worked well for such an event.

Unfortunately, our room was a let-down by comparison. It felt very dated and small (others who'd paid the same price were treated to much bigger and newer rooms). Luck of the draw I suppose but we'd expected more for the relatively large outlay. We ultimately decided to upgrade (at cost) to one of the lodge rooms separate to the main building - this was a much better room with an amazing view across the bay - but led to a rather expensive weekend all round.

We stayed for 1 night in March and we were not disappointed. The hotel is charming, with loads of character and with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were excellent, friendly and very attentive. We paid extra for a bay view room...well worth the extra £10! We were on a DBB basis and the food was excellent, fresh and well presented. We will definitely be back :-)

Room Tip: Ask for a 1st Floor room with a bay view

Staff are all very attentive and helpful. Bedrooms clean and warm. There is a small pool which is adequate for say two people really.
The only downside I found was that the downstairs public rooms are a bit on the cool side, so take something warm with you!
Plenty of lovely walks from the hotel either north or south along the coast.

Beautiful views, nice location. Room was ok, we paid £49 so we got what we paid for and it was fine. I'm guessing there are better ones...but I'm not complaining.
The wifi was strangled seemed to have an excellent signal but was limited. Apart from that the hotel was top notch...really worth a visit.
Breakfast was a buffet...but not a dried up one! Really nice. Didn't try dinner but it looked good :)
Great staff, that do look after you. Please stay!
