With it's situation on top of the cliffs overlooking Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire the views from this hotel make it worth a visit alone. Whilst some of the rooms are in need of renovation ( something which the hotel are embarked upon) they are roomy enough and some of them have the splendid sea views mentioned earlier. The food here is outstanding and reasonably priced. We stayed for three days as part of the celebrations for my wife's 60th Birthday and we had planned on eating out on at least two of them but once we had sampled the table d'hote menu on the first night we decided that it was not worth the hassle of driving out in the evenings to eat and we really enjoyed the fact that the menu changed daily. The breakfasts were excellent too and the staff we attentive without being intrusive. Popular with coach parties of older guests it is not the haunt of those who are looking for night life but with the excellent walking available in the area and with the swimming pool, sauna and golf course (9 hole) on site there is enough to do on a short break although it might not suit families with young children. Will certainly stay there again

We stayed for four nights at the beginning of June for our honeymoon and arrived only to find out we had been upgraded my the hotel and with flowers in the room for my wife.
We ate in the restaurant on our first night and got a lovely surprise when staff placed flower petals all over the table and with a bottle of champagne on ice at our table.
The food was fantastic as was the service we received throughout our entire stay. Internet is a slight problem in the rooms but fine in the lounge and bar areas so not a major problem really, besides you are on holiday so sometimes it's kind of a treat not to be hassled by incoming mail I suppose. Rooms are lovely and clean with bath robes too, all the staff were very very friendly as well.
Just leaves us to say thank you all for a lovely week and we hope to see you again on our next visit to Whitby .

Thanks again all of you at Ravenhall

I recently stayed with 10 work colleagues and found the Hotel to be a little dated when comparing other Hotels, however when you look at the age of the building and it's history it is in keeping to be fair, the staff in my opinion were pleasant and helpful, the food was very good and plenty of choice. Our group were disappointed at not been able to view the England game in the games room as it was to small, but again looking at the style of the hotel a games room would not be in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Would I go back with the family, probably not, but as for a night away with work I would consider going back.

This is the second time we've stayed here, the first being in 2009 (see previous review) and the first place we stayed together, so it seemed fitting we should spend a couple of nights here after our wedding last week
we had one of the lodges, and was really impressed with it, with log burner, kitchenette, nice bathroom all tastefully decorated, we were well pleased.
we were there for two nights DBB. The staff, like last time were excellent, very helpful and even delivered us a complimentary bottle of bubbly as they knew we'd just been married. The gardens were as beautiful as last time.
sadly, the only let down was the food, i rememberd it being absolutley first class last time, and all cooked to perfection.this time it was no where near as good. my starter was excellent which was chicken terrine, my wife had the soup which was more like pureed potatoe than a soup and not very nice. i decided to have the sirloin steak (which had a £9.00 supplement) i'd asked for it medium/rare, it arrived medium well and wasnt good at all, very fatty which to be fair when i complained they did waive the supplement, the haggis bed it was served on was not very hot, my wife had the chicken which she said was beautiful and piping hot....unlike the vegetables which we both had were at best luke warm.
The breakfast was nice and though the plates small you could have as much as you want (how many places have large plates and end up throwing stuff away due to greedy guests with eyes bigger than their bellys). The following evenings food i hoped would be better, the starter of lambs kidney was beautiful, my main was guinea fowl which was ok though rather tough towards the middle...but again the vegetables were luke warm.
The whole trip, surroundings and excellent staff was superb, just marred by the food i'm afraid. it wouldnt stop us returning, but i would think twice about eating here again.

Stayed for a week in May our 5th visit in 7 months. Surely that speaks for itself. The staff always give us the warmest of welcomes, and the food is heaven.
The view is wonderful and looking out to sea whilst dining is so relaxing.
We are now looking forward to returning in July and November, as is our chichihua who also loves this gem of a hotel.

We stayed at this hotel for probably the 5th time on Sunday 1st June 2014, and seen a steady decline over this time. Having arrived directly from a hotel in Borrowdale, the contrast was more noticeable than ever. As stated in the other reviews, the position of this hotel is fabulous perched high on the cliffs with stunning views over the bay. Unfortunately this is not enough and the actual hotel experience is now becoming closer to average than good. We stayed in the (apparently) best room - 205 which is very good but desperately needs a new bathroom. I got the impression that the hotel’s focus is on group bookings (e.g. a Sunday afternoon party) rather than individual hotel guests.
The evening meal was quite good although the choice was limited and the service rushed. Breakfast is of the hot buffet variety on minuscule plates. Unfortunately the logistics are poor as the buffet table is in the (only) access point and congestion was common. This was made worse as many of the items ran out forcing a crowd to gather. This is basic management, hardly rocket science.
I am saddened to write this review as we have had great times here in the past, but by standing still, this hotel is going backwards and being left behind.

Room Tip: Most people ask for 205.
